The lockdown and movement restrictions have changed students’ daily lives substantially and forced them to adjust to new norms in studying which increased concerns towards their stress levels. This research attempts to identify the perceived learning stress levels among first and second year students during the pandemic. Based on the convenience sampling approach, an online questionnaire adapted from the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) and renamed as Perceived Learning Stress Scale (PLSS) was used to collect data from 113first and second year technical engineering students tto analyze their learning stress levels primarily from the impact of the online learning shift. Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) software was used to analyze the learning stress scores and its relevance. The findings reveal that the majority of students experienced moderate to high level of learning stress and the presence of significant association between the semester of study and number of credit hours taken with the level of stress they experienced. Despite the study indicating that the students experienced stressful emotions due to learning platform shift, they also developed positive emotions such as confidence and ability to handle and control the learning problems and stress as they have adapted to the prolonged online learning conditions.","PeriodicalId":190509,"journal":{"name":"FRASA: English Education and Literature Journal","volume":"54 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134452889","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Sexist language is often found in novels that demonstrated to real life where people associate and deal with stereotypes in society. This research proposes to explain and describe the sexist language types of the main characters found in Mrs. Dalloway novel based on Sara Mills’ theory. The research used a qualitative method by applying a critical discourse analysis. The words, phrases, and sentences from monologues and dialogues reflecting sexism in the novel become the data of the research. Data collection techniques used library techniques, namely documents. The data analysis technique used data reduction, data display, and verification techniques. The results of this research show that Sara Mills sexism theory categorizes sexist language into overt and covert sexism. In Mrs. Dalloway novel, there are four types that are consisted of overt sexism: naming, dictionaries, generic pronouns and nouns, and non-parallel terms. For the covert sexism, there are two types in the novel: presuppositions and metaphor.","PeriodicalId":190509,"journal":{"name":"FRASA: English Education and Literature Journal","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128522508","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For a multiracial country like Malaysia, it is crucial to examine the linguistic realities of the multilingual communities where the presence of code switching is the hallmark. A crucial area where code switching happens but not thoroughly studied is within the educational at school between teachers and students. This study set outs to explore the nature of code-switching that occur between language teachers and students in the school context. A qualitative case-study method via purposive sampling of seven English language teachers at a sub urban secondary school was adopted for this research endeavor. Rich data was elicited via written interviews comprising five key questions were distributed to all the English language teachers as respondents. The teachers responded in full to all questions and the data were prepared, qualitatively analyzed and verified. A summary of the responses was generated and presented as key findings for the study. There were general consensus among the English teachers that code switching is present as part of their repertoire of tools and strategies to ease and facilitate the learning process when situations demand for it. Code switching as a tool serves useful communication and pedagogic functions for the teachers to utilize strategically and not indiscriminately. It is used only when necessary particularly when teaching groups of students with low language proficiency. The findings from this study are significant as it shed light on the realities of teaching and learning languages. The contrastive view that code switching is not permissible for being an obstacle to learning a target language needs to be reassessed and the view that it a taboo in language teaching and learning must also be dispelled.","PeriodicalId":190509,"journal":{"name":"FRASA: English Education and Literature Journal","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127402694","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This research used three instruments to gain the data: documentation, observation and interview. Then, the collected data were analyzed using Roach, Wells Haycraft theories and PRAAT software analysis. The participants of this study were 8th semester students in English Language Education Study Program at one of the private universities in Yogyakarta. Three recordings of pre-service English teachers’ talks were transcribed by unitizing schemes, sampling plans, recording/coding, reducing data, abductively inferring contextual phenomena, and narrating the result information of the data collected. The results showed that two kinds of intonation patterns occurred in pre-service English teachers, falling and rising. The speakers’ dominant error was final rising in WH-question sentence type. The errors were caused by the physical impediment, inability in manipulating the pitch voice, and inability to keep the level tone stable. In addition, it was also due to the pre-service English teachers L1 mother tongue. This study gave information of pre-service English teachers’ ability, obstacle, and the causes of errors in producing intonation tone. It can be a reference for pre-service English teachers to look for pre-service teachers’ ability in mastering pronunciation especially intonation.","PeriodicalId":190509,"journal":{"name":"FRASA: English Education and Literature Journal","volume":"172 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114380307","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
