The flexibility of these systems allows a utilization as Energy Storage Systems (ESS) but also as power devices, for power quality applications. In the actual context of electric grids, with the emergence of the paradigm of Smart Grids, the possible applications of SMES systems are discussed, considering the actual state of the art in superconducting materials. Main envisaged applications are presented and a short comparison with other ESS is also performed, as a way to integrate SMES systems into the actual and upcoming context of power systems. Main already running or finished projects using not only standalone SMES systems but also a combination of multiple superconducting devices are also presented. Finally, a short description of concept projects using SMES systems is also given.","PeriodicalId":189182,"journal":{"name":"2015 9th International Conference on Compatibility and Power Electronics (CPE)","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-06-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114663576","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Due the vehicle machines require high torque at acceleration they are often equipped with indirect liquid cooling. One common method to implement liquid cooling is a water jacket inside machine frame as well as on the end plates. The flow rate of different cooling systems are studied. The cooling is improved in a radial machine by removing excessive material from rotor, adding copper heat paths in the rotor and by increasing the liquid cooling channel volume in the frame. Axial machine is utilized to study the cooling improvements with copper heat paths in stator and potting material. Measurements and results are presented for a permanent magnet 110 kW radial machine and for a permanent magnet 75 kW axial machine.","PeriodicalId":189182,"journal":{"name":"2015 9th International Conference on Compatibility and Power Electronics (CPE)","volume":"45 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-06-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125519149","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The method is applied in operating plants, which is a novelty with respect to the majority of the methods proposed so far, used only in the mirrors design phase. Laser scanners have turned out to be an ideal tool for acquiring the surface of parabolic mirrors on field. The aim of our proposal is the comparison of the sensed 3D data with a theoretical parabolic surface. All the phases needed for the achievement of this objective constitute a general framework that has been detailed throughout this paper. The proposed framework has been applied to the analysis of real surfaces of parabolic solar trough collectors acquired in an operating solar thermal plant. The results obtained demonstrate its validity and robustness.","PeriodicalId":189182,"journal":{"name":"2015 9th International Conference on Compatibility and Power Electronics (CPE)","volume":"183 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-06-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115071995","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Nevertheless, the PV circuit can be left in open-circuit mode to increase the effective thermal absorption or the PV electricity generated can be used to heat the storage fluid through a secondary electrical heating element. Annual dynamic simulations using representative solar water heating system sizes and representative PV-T technology were conducted for these three configurations. The purpose was to indirectly determine how they would perform on a temporary basis if used on demand by grid-operators as part of the renewable energy resources at their disposal. The results show that the use of local PV electricity to heat the storage fluid caused the shortest pump running time and lowest auxiliary energy consumption of all cases considered. In light of these results, it is reasonable to state that this solution is more efficient than disabling the PV array to increase the heat available at the collector. The practical implications of a potential application of these methods were also discussed.","PeriodicalId":189182,"journal":{"name":"2015 9th International Conference on Compatibility and Power Electronics (CPE)","volume":"92 6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-06-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129350236","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the distribution of rotor windings differs profoundly among the two types, as the squirrel-cage rotor features non-sinusoidal distribution of bars along the air-gap. In this paper, a model of squirrel-cage induction motor is derived based on the actual geometry of stator windings and rotor loops. Various types of inductances which are instrumental to the description of the model are computed by means of winding function. Consequently, a winding asymmetry can be easily incorporated in the model as shown for the case of broken rotor bar.","PeriodicalId":189182,"journal":{"name":"2015 9th International Conference on Compatibility and Power Electronics (CPE)","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-06-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124959584","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Having this in mind several different solutions are emerging with the purpose of helping the control of energy in all possible ways, whether at its starting pipeline, i.e. where the energy is produced, at the middle pipeline, i.e. where and how the energy is transported, or finally, at the end of the pipeline, where the energy is consumed. At the moment, most solutions are addressing the problem at the end of the pipeline, because it is easier to control the consumption, than it is to alter all of the parts that compose an energy system. Thus, the solution proposed in this paper refers to the development of a platform capable of providing energy prediction on buildings, whether the building is commercial, industrial or residential. The platform will be composed of prediction algorithms, supported by the use of computational intelligence methods such as Artificial Neural Networks (ANN). The main objective of this platform is to use datasets previously recorded of the building energy consumption, along with a number of other parameters, to accurately predict the energy consumption of a given day, so that future, and pondered actions can be taken in order to provide a suitable response for that given day. Technically, the platform itself will be based on standard online remote communication protocols, and this platform is to be integrated with, amongst other equipment, energy meters.","PeriodicalId":189182,"journal":{"name":"2015 9th International Conference on Compatibility and Power Electronics (CPE)","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-06-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129215629","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It has several advantages, such as the reduced greenhouse emissions, fuel savings and its ease of use. The increase of the electric vehicles in the roads raises issues about their impact on the grid, in terms of power quality. This paper presents the main considerations about power balance and the impact of an electric vehicle charge in the voltage, current, and total harmonic distortion. An experimental charging station prototype for Modes 2 and 3 is used to acquire data of voltage, current and active and reactive power for different charging profiles and battery state of charge.","PeriodicalId":189182,"journal":{"name":"2015 9th International Conference on Compatibility and Power Electronics (CPE)","volume":"59 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-06-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123687454","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The proposed design procedure utilises the formulation of similarity laws and scale models to compare SRG magnetic structures. Besides evaluating regular and similar topologies the scale models are here applied in dimensional analysis of topologies distinguished by different characteristics of electric and magnetic circuits. Furthermore, the scale models methodology can cover physical phenomena like thermal changes and magnetic saturation by introducing some constraints. This work is motivated by the application of SRG to direct drive wind converters and other low speed renewable energy systems. The paper contains the illustration of dimensional analyses on a modular topology with short flux-paths designed for a direct drive wind turbine. Comparing with a regular machine, the short flux-paths topology can optimize the efficiency and weight taking benefits from the significant gain of power per unit of mass and lower losses.","PeriodicalId":189182,"journal":{"name":"2015 9th International Conference on Compatibility and Power Electronics (CPE)","volume":"53 ","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-06-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114352180","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper an energy efficient testing of converted-fed electric drives is presented. A DC link connection between two converters, which supply braking and tested machine, enables energy recuperation. The software solution provides five different testing modes such as: manual control of only one motor, manual control of synchronized machines, fully automated measurement of various characteristics (torque, efficiency...), loading according to user-defined function and loading using periodical reference signal. Experimental results of presented tests confirm versatility of the test bed. Such test bed is not only useful for industrial testing but can also be exploited in educational process and in research activities.","PeriodicalId":189182,"journal":{"name":"2015 9th International Conference on Compatibility and Power Electronics (CPE)","volume":"56 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-06-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121733246","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
