The study used a case study design. The sample consisted of 26 pre-service biology teachers. The Study Process Questionnaire developed by Biggs was used to determine the learning approaches of pre-service teachers. Data were collected through interviews and portfolios. The data obtained were analyzed by descriptive analysis method. Through the use of portfolios, it was found that pre-service teachers improved in questioning what they learned, using time and finding solutions. It was also found that critical thinking skills of pre-service teachers with surface learning approach were at a lower level. It was determined that pre-service teachers with strategic and deep learning approaches differed from pre-service teachers with surface learning approach in terms of establishing relationships between the subjects they learned. The skills of finding a solution to the problem encountered, which is one of the critical thinking skills of pre-service teachers with deep and strategic learning approach, was developed through the portfolio. It is recommended that teachers should develop instructions and activities suitable for each learning approach by considering learning approaches in developing critical thinking.","PeriodicalId":188493,"journal":{"name":"African Educational Research Journal","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134912746","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

University students (n = 10; mean age: 20.30 ± 1.57 years), participated in this study. Measurements were taken from each participant at two separate time points on a university campus. During these visits, the physiological responses were recorded for two AVGs and resting conditions for measurement of physical activity level. The AVGs were randomly played for 15 minutes using an Xbox One device on the university campus. Physiological responses were measured continuously using the computerized, breath-by-breath analysis system, also the heart rate was recorded continuously. Data were analyzed using a one-way repeated measures ANOVA. The findings demonstrate that active video imitative and combative games significantly increased physiological responses, the energy expenditure from 0.019 ± 0.002 (rest) to 0.102 ± 0.019 and 0.131 ± 0.017 kcal.kg−1.min−1, respectively. The MET values of games (imitative: 5.937 ± 1.03; combative: 7.547 ± 0.94) were significantly higher than the rest (1.120 ± 0.11). The HR values significantly increased from 72.4 ± 9.96 beat.min-1 for rest to 132.2 ± 21.10 beat.min-1 for the imitative game, and 153.1 ± 19.76 beat.min-1 for the combative game. The highest physiological responses were determined for active video combative games which were significantly higher than active video imitative game responses (p < 0.01) and rest (p < 0.001). In conclusion, both combative and imitative AVGs, which can be integrated into campus and physical education classes, could serve as effective tools for increasing the physical activity levels of university students.","PeriodicalId":188493,"journal":{"name":"African Educational Research Journal","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135827309","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Self-regulation refers to individuals’ efforts to modify their thoughts, emotions, desires, and actions in line with the goals they want to achieve. Awareness and flexibility are effective cognitive skills for self-regulation. Although self-regulation is a widely researched subject, the variables it is associated with have not been studied much. However, a detailed examination of these relations will contribute to the development of qualified applications in this regard. So, this study examined the relationships among these three variables believed to be effective in individuals’ problem-solving and adaptation to life. For this purpose, answers to the following questions were sought in the study; is there a significant correlation between mindfulness, cognitive flexibility and self-regulation and are mindfulness and cognitive flexibility significant predictors of self-regulation? This study was conducted using a correlational survey model. The population of the study comprises undergraduate students in 2018 and the study’s sample group consists of 506 students. Pearson Product-Moment Correlation and Multiple Linear Regression analyses were utilized to investigate relationships between variables. According to the regression analysis results, cognitive flexibility and mindfulness have been found to be significant predictors of self-regulation. Accordingly, cognitive flexibility predicts 20% of the variance in self-regulation, while mindfulness predicts 11% of the variance. Furthermore, the results indicate that together, these two variables explain a substantial portion (46%) of the variance in self-regulation. These findings have been evaluated in the context of the relevant literature.","PeriodicalId":188493,"journal":{"name":"African Educational Research Journal","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135826454","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is important to establish links with other language skill areas in the development of writing skills. In this study, it was aimed to analyze the writing skills of Kyrgyz students studying distance learning at A1 level during the pandemic. 28 Kyrgyz students participated in the study. In this context, it was desired to determine the most common mistakes in written expression in order to evaluate the students' habits of using Turkey's Turkish language structures at A1 level. The data in the study were generated by having the students write a self-introductory article. In this framework, descriptive analysis was used in this study designed with qualitative research model. The data were collected through the writings uploaded on the web interface of Kyrgyzstan-Turkey Manas University. The instructor took the data from the E-Course Distance Education Portal tool and analyzed them in order. Based on the writing assignments in the study, errors originating from the students were evaluated and interpreted. These errors were categorized as phonetics, morphology and spelling. As a result of the research, it was determined that students made negative transfers with the influence of their mother tongue. However, it was supported that the instructor should keep the motivation of the student high with the role of a guide in the language teaching process and the materials that attract the student's interest in the distance education process should be more involved in the learning-teaching environment. In this context, it is assumed that the results of the study will contribute to teaching Turkey's Turkish to Kyrgyz.","PeriodicalId":188493,"journal":{"name":"African Educational Research Journal","volume":"54 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-08-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126696135","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

When selecting articles pertinent to their research, the prevalence of online publication leads readers to use online search engines like Google Scholar, which generally displays the first few words of a title, making the title highly important. This study aimed to investigate some key features, such as length, style, syntactic structure and punctuation marks of titles in Turkish research articles in medicine and engineering. To this end, we selected 1,200 titles in four leading journals publishing research articles in these disciplines. As a tool to collect data, document analysis was used in the study to analyze such features of titles and in analyzing the data, descriptive analysis technique was used. The study revealed that both medicine and engineering have almost the equivalent title length. Titles in both disciplines are dominated by single-unit ones and both single-unit and compound titles are predominated by nominal group construction. The results also suggested some disciplinary differences: Compound titles were more common in medicine than in engineering. Medical titles appear to have used more varied syntactic structures in forming titles. Moreover, medical titles have shown a high degree of complexity in terms of punctuation usage. The differences might be attributed to disciplinary practices set out in these two fields. The results of the present study will provide novice writers with ample opportunity to construct their titles as best they can while maintaining their effort to build and enhance their academic writing skills.","PeriodicalId":188493,"journal":{"name":"African Educational Research Journal","volume":"364 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-08-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122448281","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The selection of textbooks, which are crucial materials for both teachers and learners in the teaching-learning process, requires careful consideration of specific criteria. Textbooks wield an effect on intrinsic motivation factors like interest, desire, and curiosity. They also impact academic achievement directly. Considering that a contemporary foreign language textbook should include important elements of other cultures and provide valuable cultural information, it's vital to consider cultural elements while selecting these textbooks. Hence, this study selected two textbooks that follow the communicative parametric method, devised primarily for foreign language education for adults, particularly in integration courses. This study analyzed and compared the textbook “Schritte” for foreigners who want to learn German and the textbook “Yeni Hitit” for foreigners who want to learn Turkish in terms of cultural elements. The study focuses on investigating and elaborating on cultural elements in these textbooks. To achieve these objectives, qualitative research was used in compliance with the criteria of validity and reliability of the research. The research showed that both textbooks adequately included cultural elements and provided the target language-target culture context. Both textbooks were found to present features specific to the countries in which they were written. Furthermore, these textbooks highlight the distinctions that exist in terms of characteristics among different groups of people and cultures. It has been concluded that these books are shaped to provide tolerance and empathy towards other cultures, emphasizing the differences in the characteristics of other cultures, and providing the opportunity to learn the culture of the learned language as well as learning a foreign language.","PeriodicalId":188493,"journal":{"name":"African Educational Research Journal","volume":"200 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-08-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122830599","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
