The mediating role of psychological empowerment (meaning, competence, self-determination, impact) was also examined in the relationship between job resources and innovative work behaviors. Based on the established measurement scales, the questionnaire was used to collect data through quota sampling and purposive sampling methods. Empirical investigation was conducted with confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation modeling analysis. The results reveal that job resources were significantly and positively correlated with innovative work behaviors, and psychological empowerment mediated the relationship between job resources and innovative work behaviors.","PeriodicalId":188493,"journal":{"name":"African Educational Research Journal","volume":"8 6","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-06-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141271745","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Since even a single punctuation mark is crucial for writing and reading Turkish letters (ı-i, o-ö, u-ü, c-ç, g-ğ, s-ş, etc.), students who use the Arabic alphabet have great difficulty writing and pronouncing Turkish words correctly. The difficulties that foreigners have in spelling vowels (ı-i, o-ö, u-ü) and consonants (c-ç, g-ğ, m-n, s-ş) when learning Turkish also have a negative impact on their writing and speaking skills. Especially in essay writing classes, students often misspell words, which makes it necessary to determine and implement more effective strategies in alphabet lessons. When teaching the Turkish alphabet, it is of great importance that the teacher uses “onomatopoeia,” which is considered an important feature of Turkish, to overcome this problem. In this study, the effect of onomatopoeia, the word corresponding to sounds in nature, on writing skills in Turkish classes for foreigners was investigated. This study, taken from a class of nine students at the Afyon Kocatepe University Turkish Language Teaching Centre at A1 level in the semesters of 2013–2014, was based on the analysis of three essays written by the students before and after studying onomatopoeia. The analysis of the data revealed that teaching the alphabet with onomatopoeic words was effective for the students in terms of the letters whose spellings were confused with each other and made a significant contribution to the writing skills of foreigners.","PeriodicalId":188493,"journal":{"name":"African Educational Research Journal","volume":"14 11","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-05-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140966865","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Research shows that emotional and biopsychosocial well-being changes over the course of their schooling, with a general increase in anxiety, highlighting the need to further investigate the risk factors that contribute to worry and anxiety symptoms among college student populations. In Mauritius, there has been a rise in the number of adolescents who are recipients of psychiatric treatments at the local government hospitals as well as an increase in the number of cases reported to the school authorities. The present study aimed to identify the causal factors of anxiety among adolescents, and its effects in the educational context. Further, the role of educational social workers in overcoming anxiety was explored and the aim was achieved using the exploratory approach. A focus group discussion using a semi-structured questionnaire was conducted with ten (10) people including educational social workers and educational psychologists recruited through convenience sampling. A thematic analysis of the data shows academic anxiety as an emerging factor, followed by bullying and lastly, family issues. The findings revealed impacts at the school level such as students’ inability to concentrate in class, non-participative and also showing emotional distress. While educational social workers provide counselling to students and parents, a need for teacher empowerment and peer counselling are proposed as future avenues.","PeriodicalId":188493,"journal":{"name":"African Educational Research Journal","volume":"25 70","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-04-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140711443","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A pilot study investigates the implementation of a novel teacher education program in Israeli academia, with a focus on the freedom it grants to institutions. This program emerged during the Covid-19 crisis when e-learning dominated. The study assesses 45 respondents' perceptions of teaching practice and the academia-school relationship through a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods. On the quantitative front, the study involved the examination of several questionnaires. These included a self-efficacy questionnaire, an attitude survey regarding teaching, an evaluation of professional identity, and an attitude questionnaire centered on practical experiences within schools. In the assessment of self-efficacy, we utilized a modified version of the General Self-Efficacy Scale (GSE). Additionally, the researchers crafted the other questionnaires. The study also encompassed an exploration of student satisfaction levels concerning collaboration during practical experiences, the acquisition of various skills during school-based practice, and the correlation between the teacher training program's different courses and practical work within school settings. The research covered the documentation and formative assessment of the design and alteration processes within teacher education based on the outlined changes. The study evaluated these processes through primary documents from the academic institution, which provided evidence of the change preparation. It also analyzes the goals, learning outcomes, and teaching methods for students specializing in education. The study highlights changes in teaching practice that foster connections between academia and the field, particularly in pedagogy. These changes focus on the intensified school-based experience, paired with e-teaching workshops. Findings reveal that in evaluating teaching practice competence, interpersonal skills and professional identity rank highly among skills gained during field experiences. The research also showcases the acquisition of essential teaching and class management skills. The study raises questions regarding the program's impact on institutions, particularly concerning its role in enhancing autonomy and relevance. The study evaluates the program’s potential as a catalyst for effective teacher education and its ability to attract mission-driven, motivated individuals to the teaching profession.","PeriodicalId":188493,"journal":{"name":"African Educational Research Journal","volume":"39 12","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140086317","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the study, phenomenology design was used as the qualitative research method. Criterion sampling, one of the purposeful sampling methods, was used to determine the study group. In the selection of the participants in this study, the main criterion was the presence of Turkish students with foreign students in their classrooms. According to this criterion, a total of 84 primary school students constituted the study group. As a data collection tool, two sentences were used as the data collection tool: \"In my opinion, foreign students are like .... Because ...\" form consisting of two sentences was created. Content analysis technique was used to analyze the data. According to the findings obtained from the analysis of the collected data, a total of 39 metaphors were produced in the study group. These metaphors were categorized as positive and negative. While the positive metaphors of the students were divided into 6, that is, categories diversity, kind-heartedness, equality, industriousness, beauty and protectiveness, no negative metaphors were found. It can be concluded that Turkish students who have foreign students in their class have positive perceptions towards their foreign friends. In order to enrich and reinforce positive perceptions, value-sensitive education plan practices are recommended.","PeriodicalId":188493,"journal":{"name":"African Educational Research Journal","volume":"15 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139266748","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study examined the prevalence of teachers having membership in professional associations and the relationship between teachers’ membership in professional academic associations and their productivity in Anglo-Saxon Universities in Cameroon. The sequential convergent mixed method design was adopted for the study. The sample size of the study consisted of 436 lecturers, 603 postgraduate students, and 20 administrators. A questionnaire and an interview guide were the instruments adopted for the study. The Spearman rho test was used to test the hypotheses of the study, which examined the significant relationship between professional associations and teachers’ productivity in Anglo-Saxon Universities in Cameroon. The participants were sampled using purposive, proportionate, and convenient sampling techniques. The findings showed that 45.6% of the students do not see their lecturers as productive while 54.4% see them as productive. Furthermore, more of the teachers 61.0% are not members of any professional associations, while 39.0% are members. Despite a low percentage of teachers having membership in professional academic associations, many of them-66.5% (280) opined that membership in professional academic associations is important for teachers while 33.5% (141) said is not important. Thus, it was statistically revealed that membership in professional associations (R-value = 0.280**, p-value = 0.000, < 0.05) significantly and positively correlates with teachers’ productivity. Based on the findings, it was recommended that all teachers should at least be a member of one or two professional academic associations as it improves on their research and work output, and provides networking opportunities for members to attend conferences and be updated on the recent developments.","PeriodicalId":188493,"journal":{"name":"African Educational Research Journal","volume":"2 2","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135272834","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
