The power quality impact of a capacitor switching event is traditionally evaluated with the Electromagnetic transients (EMT) simulation program. This requires the creation of EMT cases for studying the event, which can be a very time consuming process. All utility companies conduct load flow and short-circuit studies for their systems and cases are always available for such studies. This paper presents an idea to conduct capacitor switching study using short-circuit program. The proposed method can be integrated into the program, resulting in significant saving of engineering time for capacitor switching studies. The proposed method conducts transients studies in frequency (harmonic) domain. It models a capacitor switching event as a harmonic voltage source. It is used an objective function which computes a penalty for voltage deviation in each bus coupled with the active power losses of the system. In this way, it is considered the equality and inequality constraints concerning the power flow, total apparent power of DG, number of installed DGs, fixed or variable power factor and voltage limits. In this paper, it is aimed to employ passive filters for effective utilization of the cables and transformers in the harmonically contaminated power systems. To attain this goal, an optimal passive filter design approach is provided to maximize the power factor definition, which takes into account frequency-dependent losses of the power transmission and distribution equipment, under non-sinusoidal conditions. The obtained simulation results show that the proposed approach has a considerable advantage on the reduction of the total transmission loss and the transformer loading capability under non-sinusoidal conditions when compared to the traditional optimal filter design approach, which aims to maximize classical power factor definition. Under various loading conditions on the offshore platform, voltage fluctuation and control becomes problematic. The installation of a 13.8 kV shunt capacitor bank (SCB) and shunt reactor bank (SRB), was initially introduced to remedy voltage control. During transient analysis, under faulty conditions adjacent to the SCB, the 13.8 kV circuit breaker (CB) will be exposed to an excessive transient recovery voltage (TRV) exceeding the limit of the 13.8 kV CB. The harmonic analysis also indicated high values on the 5th, 7th and 11th harmonic voltage distortion. A comprehensive power system analysis was undertaken to investigate mitigation measures. In many cases it is only practical to measure the PQ parameters of some of the sites in a network and to use statistical analysis. The paper examines the minimum number of monitored sites needed to demonstrate compliance with a prescribed degree of confidence - e.g. at the 95% confidence level. Analysis is made of samples extracted randomly from sites included in the Australian Long Term National PQ Survey. The required number of sites is found to vary with the PQ disturbance of concern and is largest with voltage unbalance.
