Schlüpmann","doi":"10.18146/TMG.38","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.18146/TMG.38","url":null,"abstract":"The question of 'Fantastic motion' is whether films in the 1910s and 1920s should be viewed as merely the forerunners of patriarchal cinema, which some colleagues believe, or whether they offered - and still offer - alternatives to a female audience. The author makes a case for the latter possibility and searches for explanations for the enjoyable and liberating sensations they, as women, experienced while becoming acquainted with early film. Using a historical and contextual approach, Schlupmann investigates genres including non-fiction, comedy and romantic drama from the early 1910s, and describes how the significance of notions such as the beauty of nature, the culture of humour and love could have been adopted into the perception of women filmgoers at the time. -- De vraag achter Schlupmanns 'Fantastic motion' is of de cinema van de jaren tien en twintig slechts gezien moet worden als voorloper van patriarchale cinema, zoals sommige collegae vinden, of dat zij alternatieven bood - en biedt - aan een vrouwelijk publiek. Ze pleit voor de tweede mogelijkheid en zoekt naar verklaringen voor de aangename en bevrijdende sensaties die de kennismaking met vroege film bij hen, als vrouwen, teweeg heeft gebracht. Met haar historiserende en contextualiserende benadering verkent Schlupmann genres zoals non-fictiefilm, de komische film, en het romantisch drama van de vroege jaren tien en beschrijft zij betekenissen die noties zoals de schoonheid van de natuur, de cultuur van het lachen en de liefde kunnen hebben aangenomen in de waarneming van vrouwen die destijds naar de film gingen.","PeriodicalId":187553,"journal":{"name":"TMG Journal for Media History","volume":"69 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-08-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129258315","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Dat was ambitieuzer dan de uitwisseling van programma's waaruit de activiteiten van de EBU tot dan toe hadden bestaan. Juridische en andere problemen stonden een 'Europese Gemeenschap voor Televisie' echter in de weg, vooral in het geval van programma-experimenten die niet met sport of nieuws te maken hadden. Wolfgang Degenhardt analyseert aande hand van drie voorbeelden welke problemen dat nu precies waren, die ervoor zorgden dat we heden ten dage Eurovisie voornamelijk kennen als voorvoegsel bij Songfestival.-- Playing with borders. Communalproduction of Eurovisiontelevision programmes in the 1950s and 1960s The group of European broadcasting corporations, the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), devised a plan in 1954 for a series of broadcasts aimed at all of Europe: Eurovision. Up until then, EBU.activities had been confined to simply exchanging programmes and thus the Eurovision concept was quite ambitious. Legal issues and other problems created obstacles in forming a 'European Television Community', especially in cases of experimental programmes not related to sport or news. Using three examples, Wolfgang Degenhardt analyses the problems that led to our current perception of 'Eurovision' mainly as a prefix to the 'Song Festival'.","PeriodicalId":187553,"journal":{"name":"TMG Journal for Media History","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-08-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121223669","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The author makes a case for the latter possibility and searches for explanations for the enjoyable and liberating sensations they, as women, experienced while becoming acquainted with early film. Warth focuses on the differences in the representation of the female body and compares Musidora's embodiment of the Irma Vep personage in LES VAMPIRES (Louis Feuillade, 1915) with Maggie Cheung's in IRMA VEP (Olivier Assayas, 1996). By combining modern reception with textual analysis, Warth traces the differences between both representations for a modern female audience.-- De vraag achter Warths bijdrage 'Moving bodies', is of de cinema van de jaren tien en twintig slechts gezien moet worden als voorloper van patriarchale cinema, zoals sommige collegae vinden, of dat zij alternatieven bood - en biedt - aan een vrouwelijk publiek. In anticipation of the workshop, TMG has chosen three articles for publication, which provide an introduction to film history from a gender perspective, an area of research growing in popularity, also in the Netherlands. The English concept of 'gender' is impossible to translate into a single Dutch word. 'Gender' indicates sexual constructions and relations. Research conducted from this perspective relates to the current trend of historie film criticism stemming from the study of early film, but intends also to pave new directions in research. In 'An overview', Annette Forster and Eva Warth describe both methodological coherence and divergence in feminist film criticism over the last three decades. This classification serves to introduce the field and to stimulate reflection on the worth of multiple approaches to research. -- Komend najaar heeft aan de Universiteit Utrecht de internationale workshop Gender and silent cinema plaats. Als voorzet daarvoor publiceert TMG drie artikelen, die tevens een orientatie vormen op de filmgeschiedenis vanuit het gender-perspectief, een onderzoeksterrein dat, ook in Nederland, groeiende is. Het Engelse begrip 'gender' laat zich in het Nederlands niet in een woord vertalen. Het duidt constructies van sekse en reflecties op sekseverhoudingen aan. Onderzoek vanuit dit perspectief sluit aan bij de hedendaagse trend van filmhistorische wetenschapskritiek die voortvloeit uit de bestudering van vroege film, maar het beoogt bovendien nieuwe onderzoeksrichtingen aan te wijzen. In 'An overview' beschrijven Annette Forster en Eva Warth methodologische samenhangen en divergenties in feministisch-filmhistorisch onderzoek van de laatste drie decennia. Deze systematisering beoogt het terrein te introduceren en daarnaast reflectie op de productiviteit van veel gehanteerde onderzoeksstrategieen te stimuleren.","PeriodicalId":187553,"journal":{"name":"TMG Journal for Media History","volume":"53 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-08-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124846224","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Dat is niet nieuw. Maar ook niet iets van alle tijden. Toen vanaf 1948 in Nederland weer Duitse films vertoond mochten worden, was gedurende enige tijd de Duitse muziekfilm in Nederland razend populair, jongeren spiegelden zich aan schlagerzangeressen, wat leidde tot een nieuwe jongerencultuur. In onderstaand artikel beschrijft Mustafa Ozen de periode in de jaren vijftig dat Nederlandse jongeren vielen voor idolen als Caterina Valente, Conny Froboess,Freddy Quinn en Peter Alexander.-- Hier bin ich, hier bleib ich (I'm here, I'm staying here). Popularity of German cinema in the Netherlands in the 1950s. Recent studies indicate that Dutch youth harbour anti-German sentiments. This is nothing new. However, Germany has not always been out of favour with Dutch youngsters. Starting in 1948 after German films were again permitted to be shown, German musicals enjoyed enormous popularity in the Netherlands. A new youth culture emerged around scores of youngsters imitating German female pop singers. In the article below, Mustafa Ozen describes how Dutch youth in the 1950S swooned over idols including Caterina Valente, Conny Froboess, Freddy Quinn and Peter Alexander.","PeriodicalId":187553,"journal":{"name":"TMG Journal for Media History","volume":"154 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-08-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131748306","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Voor het maken van de educatief bedoelde documentaires werd J. C. Lamster gecontracteerd. Als oud-militair wist hij alles van Indie, maar niets van film. Wat deed een oud-kapitein met een camera en hoe kwam zijn bijzondere collectie tot stand? In oktober 1997 gaf Carinda Strangio een lezing in het Filmmuseum (in het kader van de Archimedia Masterclass) over de achtergronden van de Lamster-collectie. Onderstaand artikel is een bewerking van die lezing. Station Soekaboemi. The Film Museum's Lamster collection. When the Colonial Institute was established at the start of the 20 century with the goal of expanding 'knowledge of our colonies' in the Netherlands, film was seen as playing an important role. J.C. Lamster was contracted to make educational documentaries. As a veteran he knew plenty about Indonesia, but nothing about filmmaking. What could a retired captain with a camera do and how did his unique collection come into existence? In October 1997 in the Film Museum, Carinda Strangio gave a lecture on the history of the Lamster collection as part of the Archimedia Masterclass. The article in this issue of TMG is based on that lecture, in which Strangio reconstructed the developments surrounding Lamster's Indonesian adventure.","PeriodicalId":187553,"journal":{"name":"TMG Journal for Media History","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-08-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123631546","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
