{"title":"X-RAY INTENSIFYING ACTION OF LEAD SCREENS","authors":"Y. Koseki, Akio Miyauchi","doi":"10.11454/PHOTOGRST1951.1955.29","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.11454/PHOTOGRST1951.1955.29","url":null,"abstract":"In order to increase the blackening density of x-ray films, several methods are usually employed, in which a film is placed between two sheets of fluorescent intensifying screens or lead screens, and exposed to an x-ray beam. A fraction of incident x-ray energy is converted into light or electrons which have greater photographic action than x-ray photons, and contribute to increase the photographic density effectively. The factor of intensification, which varies with the type of film, quality of x-rays and characteristics of intensifying screen, is several hundred for fluorescent intensifying screens. The lead screens, on the contrary, have only an intensifying factor of four or less. But they increase the resolving power and the sharpness of radiographic images on the film, because they absorb scattered rays from any object, the floor etc. In the present paper, the intensifying action of lead screens will be reported, especially the optimum thickness of lead screens obtained by experiment will be discussed. Intensification due to lead screens is performed both by a front screen, which is in contact with the front face of an x-ray film, and by a back screen, which is in contact with the back face of an x-ray film (usually x-ray film consists of emulsion layers coated on the both sides of film base). Absorbed energy of incident x-rays is converted to high energy secondary electrons by interaction of x-ray photons and lead atomso. When a front screen which has appropriate thickness is placed on the emulsion layer, a fraction of incident x-rays is absorbed by lead atoms, which constitute the lead screen. Consequently, blackening density of emulsion due to x-rays itself decreases. However, a number of the effective secondary elections converted from incident x-rays in the front screen inject themselves into emulsion layer, and produce an additive blackening. When x-rays which have penetrated the film pass through the back screen, secondary electrons are ejected from the screen in the opposite direction to incident x-rays, and then the blackning density of film increases like the front screen. In this case, intensifying action saturates with increasing thickness of back screen. On the other band, intensifying action of the front screen indicates a maximum value at appropriate thickness screen. Optimum thicknesses of front and back screens vary with the used x-ray quality to a certain extent. Formerly, 100---150 micron lead screens were used for both front and back, but, about 50 micron thickness front screen is recently recommended for the front screen2). In some cases of our experimental conditions, in which commercial x-ray films have been irradiated by heavy filtered x-rays of 100-200 kVp, it is found that the recent value of front screen thickness is suitable. The back screen has its saturation thickness at about 50 microns in the same conditions.","PeriodicalId":187531,"journal":{"name":"Bulletin of The Society of Scientific Photography of Japan","volume":"38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121799237","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
