In fiction, especially in novels, the depiction of the 19th/20th century city has always attracted attention as a reflection of the formation of modern society through portrayals of both daily life and the development trends of the era's ideas. Writer, publicist, social activist Augusts Deglavs (18621922) created a unique portrait of the modernization of the city in Latvian literature with his novel Riga (Riga) (part 1 in 1912, part 2 in 1921). The novel demonstrates the awakening of Latvians and their formation as a cultural nation in a multicultural society in the conditions of double colonialism in the second half of the 19th century. One of the focal points of the novel is the diverse spectrum of cultural practices in an emerging industrial and multicultural society. The novel shows that cultural practices are determined by power hegemony and confrontation, various social experiences, ethnic, professional, religious affiliations, ideologies, behavioural norms and mass cultural emancipation. The research was conducted in a culture-oriented perspective, involving the social sciences and the current interdisciplinary approach. The approach of Cultural Studies and New Historicism method are used, with which it is possible to discover how Augusts Deglavs novel is rooted in the cultural practices, circulation of ideas and historical developments of the era. New Historicism looks at literature as one of the voices in the polyphony of history or an era, a voice which can sound just as powerful in content as the voice of history and culture itself, because literature is one of the links in the chain of cultural processes.

Jan Amos Comenius (28 March 1592 15 November 1670) is a leading representative of the Czech culture of the 17th century, and he became famous, especially as an author of didactic works, which represented a breakthrough in the field of education and inspired the way to modern educational methods. These works were based on Comenius tireless effort to look for didactic means to spread the knowledge he managed to gather. Thanks to these innovations, he became known as the teacher of nations. The aim of this paper is to present some of his most significant works in this area. \u0000The following part of the paper will focus on another aspect of his versatile activities in connection with the difficulties experienced by the Czech nation during the tragic and turbulent times after the Battle of White Mountain and the ban on non-Catholic religions. At that time, many Czech scholars emigrated. A substantial part of Comenius work is devoted to expressing his feelings concerning the destiny of his nation and looking for ways to comfort and encourage those living in exile. In this respect, this paper will analyse one of his most significant works, the allegory The Labyrinth of the World and the Paradise of the Heart. The paper will also deal with Comenius activities related to the Unity of the Brethren, which published the Kralice Bible an important achievement for the Czech language and culture. \u0000In the midst of turbulent and wartime times, Comenius, in the spirit of his humanistic mission, realised that to improve conditions in the world, the spiritual renewal of humanity was necessary, and he devoted his life to searching for ways of ennobling mans life.

The French philosopher having the intention once more to deal with humanitys big problems, he intensifies Euripides text with elements drawn from modern society and era. The theme dealt with is war and suppression, along with their conviction, a pattern especially popular with the creator since it is the one he deals with in his debut drama Bariona ou le fils de tonnerre (1940). Also, The Trojan Women (1964) linguistic style matches that of Bariona and Nekrassov (1955), since the personalities of the main heroes in all three plays are governed by the same notions: self denial, rebelliousness and a firm belief in the ideals. The element which distinguishes the abovementioned texts from the rest of the writers dramaturgic work is their abstinence from an existential and psychological analytical spirit. Thus, the existentialist dramaturgists familiar speech with which so many scholars have been preoccupied is almost absent from The Trojan Women. The Sartres goal is to shout out loud Euripides big truths and in order to achieve it, he instills into his heroes additional characteristics, thus giving them an even more rebellious and aggressive constitution than the already existing one, expressed by a modern glossolalia. In The Trojan Women, the pioneer writer also deals with the impaired place of woman in contemporary society, an idea also existing in current days.

Among most notable ones are the ruins of the ancient Hittites capital near modern settlement of Bogazkoy / Hattusas. The remains of the stone structures located in that area have been studied for more than a century and there are many documented discoveries. However, some of these discoveries are still lacking a reliable scientific research data. For that reason, such objects often become popular subjects for discussions by visitors with a wide variety of views. This also applies for the green stone monolith in its shape similar to a cube, located in Hattusa. The time and purpose of the installation and shaping of that stone is unknown, which has given rise to dozens of folklore stories talking about the importance of this stone block, called also as a wish stone, where both secret cults and evidence of aliens technologies and invasions are present. \u0000Current study is based on a systematic analysis of images of this green stone artifact, which allowed us to access the damages visible on exposed surfaces of this object. The study is more of a methodological orientation, although some of the similarities in images found on the exposed stone surfaces, indicate the connection of this object with the Ancient Egyptian culture.
