Improper maintenance of hygiene of the mouth is one of the risk factors for oral diseases. Researches showed that parents are responsible for inculcating good oral hygiene habits in children and mothers are considered to be the most accountable in educating the children about proper oral hygiene. This study was undertaken to explore the knowledge and practice of mothers regarding the importance of oral hygiene for children. A non-experimental descriptive research design was used, and 100 mothers of under-five children were randomly selected from the rural areas of Rajpura in Patiala District, Punjab. A self-structured knowledge questionnaire and practice checklist was used to collect the data. Analysis and interpretation of the data was done according to the objectives of the study using descriptive and inferential statistics. The present study revealed that 58 (58%) respondents had good knowledge and 57 (57%) mothers had average practices regarding the importance of oral hygiene for children. No significant relationship was observed between knowledge and practice scores. There was no significant association between the level of knowledge and the level of practice and socio-demographic variables. The study concluded that there is a lack of knowledge and practice regarding the importance of oral hygiene for children amongst the mothers residing in rural areas.","PeriodicalId":186624,"journal":{"name":"Indian Journal of Continuing Nursing Education","volume":"45 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115563706","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is estimated that 1 in 13 people suffer from anxiety. Newly admitted college students are more anxious due to their transition to a new environment and a probable lack of proficiency in technology. Researchers reported that the anxiety levels among nursing students are high with a poor impact on their health and academic status. This study evaluated the effectiveness of aerobic dance movement therapy (ADMT) on anxiety level and to associate post-test level of anxiety with selected demographic variables among B.Sc. (N) first-year students. A Quasi-experimental non-randomised control group design was used. 60 students were selected by purposive sampling technique with 30 students in each group. Zung Self Rating Anxiety Scale was used. After pre-test, intervention was given to students in the study group for 45 min on alternate days for 4 weeks followed by post-test in both groups. In pre-test, the mean anxiety score in the study group and control group were 55.93 and 55.27. After administration of ADMT, the post-test mean anxiety score was 42.17 and 54.43 in the study and control group, respectively. The mean difference in the study group is 13.77 and found to be statistically significant (t = 13.63, P = 0.001). Variables such as age, type of family, area of residence and type of attending college were significantly associated with post-test anxiety level (P ≤ 0.05). ADMT was found to be cost-effective, appropriate and feasible to implement in all settings that would help the students to manage anxiety and improve their academic performance effectively.","PeriodicalId":186624,"journal":{"name":"Indian Journal of Continuing Nursing Education","volume":"42 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132257445","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The theme for the year 2020 is 'Support Nurses and Midwives' to mark Florence Nightingale's bicentennial year. Globally, the nurses and midwives comprise more than 50% of the health-care workforce. They are one of the important health human resources needed to achieve the Sustainable Development Goal on health and well-being by 2030. The services include promotive, preventive, curative and rehabilitative health-care services covering the whole spectrum in the continuum of care. The midwives primarily provide the primary health-care services primarily at community level. Similarly, various cadres of nurses deliver various healthcare services primarily at the facility level. During the Coronavirus disease- 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic the frontline Health Care Workers (HCWs) like nurses and midwives play a vital role in breaking the chain of transmission and providing supportive care to the suspected and confirmed COVID-19 patients. This manuscript describes in detail, the unrecognised roles of nurses and midwives in prevention and control of COVID-19 across all spectrums of continuum of care. This can be identified at community and health facility level from providing health education or behaviour change communication, screening/surveillance (active or passive), contact tracing, clinical care, mental health support, hospitality services, inventory management, monitoring/supervision of personal protective equipment use and biomedical waste management, isolation ward and quarantine centre management, recording and reporting and follow-up of patient/population.","PeriodicalId":186624,"journal":{"name":"Indian Journal of Continuing Nursing Education","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121622728","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

History documents pandemics since 430 BC. Each outbreak is suspected to be related to a minuscule creature which is new to the world or with a mutation. In recent years, viruses have caused multiple disease outbreaks leading to significant global public health menace. Although we have moved and reached new heights in modern scientific medicine, there remains a gap in understanding of environmental risk factors, disease pathogenesis and apt approach towards its management. However, health-care professionals are known to struggle with their personal and professional views with respect to these concerns. It is important to determine what young nursing students know and perceive about RSH issues and how they assess their own abilities to address these issues. Cross-sectional sample of 723 1st year nursing students of the undergraduate and diploma programmes, enrolled in eight institutions in a metropolitan city in Karnataka, South India, were selected purposively for this survey. Data were obtained through a self-administered questionnaire under four main sections as follows: (i) baseline information of the student; (ii) assessment of knowledge on 'growing up issues', 'prevention of pregnancy' and 'sexually transmitted infections including HIV;' (iii) understanding perceptions of students on RSH and (iv) self-assessed competency of students. Overall knowledge scores of students were below average (<50%). Responses of students to statements related to their perceptions indicated they required clarification on various RSH issues. Students assessed their personal and professional competency to deal with RSH issues, as a little above average (56%). Cognizance of these gaps in knowledge, perceptions and self-assessed competency on RSH issues of 1st year nursing students, necessitates educators to address these gaps early in their program as they, within 6-month of being enrolled for nursing, have clinical and community postings for a considerable duration of time.","PeriodicalId":186624,"journal":{"name":"Indian Journal of Continuing Nursing Education","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116267029","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Social support serves as a buffer against life stressors and improves individuals' psychological well-being. The aim of this quantitative cross-sectional study was to examine the effect of perceived social support on stress, anxiety and depression among Nepalese nursing students. A descriptive cross-sectional study was done among 680 female nursing students enrolled for Bachelor of Science in Nursing program in nine colleges in Kathmandu valley. Depression Anxiety Stress Scale-21 was used to assess the levels of depression, anxiety and stress, whereas perceived social support was measured using Multidimensional Scale for Perceived Social Support. About half the proportion of students reported moderate to extremely severe levels of stress (47%). Majority reported moderate to extreme anxiety (72.9%) and depression (51.7%). Most students perceived high-level social support (68.9%) from family, friends and significant others. A one-way multivariate analysis of variance revealed that perceived social support had a significant effect on stress, anxiety and depression among Nepalese nursing students (Wilks' ƛ = 0.97, F (3, 676) = 8.1, P 0. 000). A discriminant analysis indicated that depression demonstrated the strongest relationship (0.95) with perceived social support contributing to the significant overall effect. The study revealed a strong relationship of perceived social support with stress, anxiety and depression among nursing students. Although most students reported high level of perceived social support, they experienced high levels of stress, anxiety and depression. Hence, the college administration should take the initiative to introduce and implement periodic mental health screening, counselling and referral services.","PeriodicalId":186624,"journal":{"name":"Indian Journal of Continuing Nursing Education","volume":"85 6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126024666","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
