Apart from traffic simulation, which is the most appropriate tool to predict traffic conditions in the case of saturation by virtue of the dynamic (in time and space) equations included, a data driven traffic model is a credible alternative, particularly when congestion is not the core of the problem and when the closeness to initial data is important to compare indicators. Such a tool is outlined here, with its advantages and drawbacks. A very limited numerical application is given. Lines of future research to develop the model are proposed.","PeriodicalId":186596,"journal":{"name":"2011 14th International IEEE Conference on Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITSC)","volume":"103 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-11-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117311200","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The goal is to early be able to say that a collision can no longer be avoided by a steering maneuver, and thus braking can be started earlier. This is done by looking at all objects in the road scene, including other vehicles and barriers, and then looking for escape paths. The paper presents a computationally efficient way of determining whether an escape path can be found in a scenario with generally positioned objects, given the limited dynamics of the vehicle.","PeriodicalId":186596,"journal":{"name":"2011 14th International IEEE Conference on Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITSC)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-11-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129757053","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The total number of crashes at unsignalized intersections is higher than the number of crashes at signalized intersections. While stop signs have been a common safety treatment for unsignalized intersections, they also introduce additional travel delays, fuel consumption and emissions. In some cases, stop signs induce increased safety hazards. Until recently, unsignalized intersections and stop signs have mostly been seen as design problems using traditional traffic engineering approaches. This paper studies the characteristics of stop signs, their unintended impacts, and potential improvements by ITS technologies.","PeriodicalId":186596,"journal":{"name":"2011 14th International IEEE Conference on Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITSC)","volume":"43 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-11-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129858238","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The treated rail traffic is homogeneous because all trains have similar characteristics, as it is generally the case of the subway and intercity rail traffic. Overtaking opportunities between trains are studied; in order to evaluate whether overtaking contributes to improve the train's frequency. This study allows us to introduce a new class of train traffic that is called “perfect homogeneous”. Perfect homogeneous rail traffic can be considered as a one way train track. We define High Frequency Train Timetabling Problem (HF-TTP) without overtaking. The problem is formulated, using an analogy with the traveling salesman problem. A genetic algorithm to quickly define the sequence of trains for reducing the period is presented.","PeriodicalId":186596,"journal":{"name":"2011 14th International IEEE Conference on Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITSC)","volume":"161 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-11-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128278346","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The proposed UCC system consists of a supervisor, a control algorithm, and a coordinator. The supervisor determines a target yaw rate and a target velocity. To achieve a target yaw rate and velocity, the control algorithm determines a desired yaw moment and a desired longitudinal force, respectively. The desired yaw moment and the desired longitudinal force can be generated by the coordination of the AFS and ESC systems. To consider a performance limit of the ESC system and tires, the coordination is designed using the optimal method. Closed loop simulations with a driver-vehicle-controller system were conducted to investigate the performance of the proposed control strategy using CarSim vehicle dynamics software and the UCC controller coded using Maltab/Simulink.","PeriodicalId":186596,"journal":{"name":"2011 14th International IEEE Conference on Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITSC)","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-11-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130517484","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The present paper focuses on ”vision”, and particularly on ”monocular” mobile vision, to reconstruct a rough Scene-Structure From Motion. Considering the 3D scene as a set of 3D planes, our c-velocity approach segments the optical flow field into plane pieces without any camera calibration or a priori knowledge about the egomotion. The technical tip is to exhibit iso-velocity curves in establishing relations between their properties and plane orientations. We show in this paper how obstacle detection becomes obvious, costless and robust with the method. Results confirm the expected robustness, not to forget that the method extends to other parameterized surfaces.","PeriodicalId":186596,"journal":{"name":"2011 14th International IEEE Conference on Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITSC)","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-11-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130563084","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Consequently, keeping traffic moving as efficiently as possible is not only important to economy but also important to environment. Traffic system is a large complex nonlinear stochastic system. Traditional mathematical methods have some limitations when they are applied in traffic control. Thus, computational intelligence (CI) technologies gain more and more attentions. Neural Networks (NNs) is a well developed CI technology with lots of promising applications in traffic signal control (TSC). In this paper, a neural network (NN) based signal controller is designed to control the traffic lights in an urban traffic road network. Scenarios of simulation are conducted under a microscopic traffic simulation software. Several criterions are collected. Results demonstrate that through online reinforcement training the controllers obtain better control effects than the widely used pre-time and actuated methods under various traffic conditions.","PeriodicalId":186596,"journal":{"name":"2011 14th International IEEE Conference on Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITSC)","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-11-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114198617","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One of these algorithms is a version of Q-learning with function approximation while the other is a policy gradient actor-critic algorithm that incorporates multi-timescale stochastic approximation. We show performance comparisons on various network settings of these algorithms with a range of fixed timing algorithms, as well as a Q-learning algorithm with full state representation that we also implement. We observe that whereas (as expected) on a two-junction corridor, the full state representation algorithm shows the best results, this algorithm is not implementable on larger road networks. The algorithm PG-AC-TLC that we propose is seen to show the best overall performance.","PeriodicalId":186596,"journal":{"name":"2011 14th International IEEE Conference on Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITSC)","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-11-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124364935","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Several good metrics and mechanisms involving bioelectric signals like the Galvanic Skin Response (GSR), Electrocardiogram (ECG) and the Photoplethysmography (PPG) have been identified by the scholars over the years. This paper discusses the features extracted from physiological data collected in five different scenarios and their usefulness with the help of statistical trend analysis methods. The algorithm developed comprises of a novel shape-based feature weight allocation approach and a technique for credible online realtime stress-trend detection. Such a stress-trend detection by the mesh of embedded sensory elements residing in the e-fabric of a wearable computing system will help in reducing chances of fatal driving errors by the way of in-time activation of alerts and actuation of corresponding safety / recovery procedures.","PeriodicalId":186596,"journal":{"name":"2011 14th International IEEE Conference on Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITSC)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-11-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128133306","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In order to successfully share lateral control of the vehicle between human driver and controller, a dynamic pre-compensation control unit (forcing control) with reference model is added to the resulting controller which combines state feedback control and feedforward control. The driver steering torque is used as input of the reference model and is estimated using a robust Proportional Integral observer with unknown input. A more precise estimation of vehicle states and driver torque provides an accurate values for computing the optimal preview steering controller from the driver-vehicle system. Simulation results are presented here to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed structure to ensure a shared lateral control between human driver and assistance.","PeriodicalId":186596,"journal":{"name":"2011 14th International IEEE Conference on Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITSC)","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-11-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134265470","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
