Although being among the oldest people on earth and the first nation of southern Africa, the San, are extremely marginalized at the present time. Stereotyping, prejudice and discrimination are some of the biggest problems the San are struggling with. Drawing on mediated, live perspectives, as well as constructed media, and relevant archival sources, we deconstruct and re-construct an alternative narrative in which a number of urban and rural-based San have actively been involved. Starting with a number of selected media representations of the San, a video elicitation shows perceptions and reactions of the audiences. These in turn have been reviewed by a rural San community, who have co-produced responding and alternative digital narratives. Those recorded mediated video conversation threads are presented at the conference in form of an interactive wall for the audience to explore. Considering that perceptions and perspectives are continuously influenced by the media, past and current San related media reports are infused into the curated video dialogue.","PeriodicalId":186364,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Second African Conference for Human Computer Interaction: Thriving Communities","volume":"125 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-12-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134450153","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It looks at text-free user interface elements for software applications from a semiotic perspective. A field test was conducted (N=40) with literate and illiterate participants of both genders in Egypt to evaluate the preferences and performance with different types of graphical representations. The participants were shown five groups of different signs, each group contained one index, one icon and one symbol to identify meanings and create stories with their preferred signs. The signs were associated with common user interface elements and with objects that the participants observed in their daily life. The results show superior performance of literates regarding sign interpretation and the use of working memory. No significant differences were found regarding the preferences of icons, indexes or symbols between literates and illiterates.","PeriodicalId":186364,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Second African Conference for Human Computer Interaction: Thriving Communities","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-12-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133375138","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

IT is becoming a strategy and an integral part of marketing all kinds of businesses. This paper presents an approach to using Augmented Reality (AR) in order to advertise lodges in Namibia. It demonstrates the work undertaken during a one-week coding week held at Onjala Lodge near Windhoek in Namibia and the exemplary AR application that was developed. The coding week also included writing a magazine article supposed to be published about the lodge, with the images functioning as two-dimensional markers for the AR application. The AR content includes images and videos from around the lodge as well as three-dimensional animal models and should spark interest in the lodge within users of the application.","PeriodicalId":186364,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Second African Conference for Human Computer Interaction: Thriving Communities","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-12-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131402645","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, according to a recent meta-review, most of the existing studies of persuasive technologies have focused on people from the developed countries. There is still a dearth of research on persuasive technology (PT) application to eCommerce, in the African context. Therefore, the overall objective of this paper is to study an African online marketplace to identify persuasive technology (PT) techniques used to optimize customer experiences on Jumia (an African eCommerce site). It is essential to evaluate how PT techniques were used to motivate desirable behaviours in the African context. Consequently, eCommerce conducted an expert evaluation to deconstruct what persuasive techniques were used in Jumia using the Persuasive System Design (PSD) framework. We also analyzed how each of the PT techniques was operationalized on the Jumia eCommerce. As a secondary objective, we conducted a study of 112 users to determine their awareness of the use of PT techniques in Jumia. The results Jumia employed some persuasive techniques to attract and retain customers. It also shows that customers are aware of and appreciated the fact that certain PT techniques were operationalized on the Jumia site. Finally, we compared our findings with that of a similar study from the Western culture. We contribute to the AfriCHI, Persuasive Technology, and HCI community in general by establishing the applicability of persuasive techniques in African context and suggesting some design implications for eCommerce sites.","PeriodicalId":186364,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Second African Conference for Human Computer Interaction: Thriving Communities","volume":"51 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-12-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129861637","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, to achieve such goals in a development setting requires a low-cost system that allows participation of multiple stakeholders in the design process. In this paper, we describe a low-cost IVR hardware system called RASP-IVR that runs on a Raspberry PI and a local GSM modem. RASP-IVR is an open source appropriate system engineered to nurture community driven solutions. We have open-sourced our system and are working with a Rwandan community based organization to test our system in the field.","PeriodicalId":186364,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Second African Conference for Human Computer Interaction: Thriving Communities","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-12-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129537192","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This project was inspired by several issues, which include low turnout/enrollment of inmates for formal and vocational programmes, low turnout of inmates in the prison libraries and violation of prison rules. We present a study conducted in four prisons stations in Anambra state command: Awka, Onitsha, Aguata, Nnewi prisons. Specifically, we created short videos featuring officers (or other persons from the prison community) discussing skill and certificate acquisition in a local language - Igbo and Pidgin English. This is to heighten awareness on the merits of a reformed/rehabilitated individual. Other video themes are the benefits of obeying prison rules and being of good behaviour while in custody. Project Mgbanwe is ongoing and our findings are preliminary, but from all indication, they are promising. We hope to enhance the correctional and reformative/rehabilitative outlook of NPS.","PeriodicalId":186364,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Second African Conference for Human Computer Interaction: Thriving Communities","volume":"102 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-12-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122505819","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The literature and our fieldwork shows that the entrepreneurs can be separated to two main categories based on their motivations; surviving and growing. The different entrepreneurs need different digital services for support. We collect these needs in the DSE-model, which is presented as our contribution. Also considered are the ethical ramifications of push to entrepreneurship.","PeriodicalId":186364,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Second African Conference for Human Computer Interaction: Thriving Communities","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-12-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128129579","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Yet despite the benefits of e-government systems, these have not yet been realized by users in public universities in Uganda, thus leading to low adoption rates. Therefore, the current study will investigate challenges and requirements for adoption of e-government systems in public universities by exploring implemented and non-adopted e-government systems in Public Universities. Pragmatism research philosophy will be used, as well as an inductive approach, and a multiple-case study design method will be applied. Data collection tools such as; questionnaire, interview guide and observation will be used. A Model for Adoption of E-government Systems in Public Universities (MAESPUU) will be designed and evaluated using structured walk through and regression analysis methods.","PeriodicalId":186364,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Second African Conference for Human Computer Interaction: Thriving Communities","volume":"221 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-12-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115491748","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The arcade-style game simulates various sexual risky behaviours that could lead to contracting STDs and HIV and how to avoid them. It engages players in an interactive manner using various persuasive strategies with the aim of imparting knowledge and skills about safe sexual behaviours/practices, how to avoid risky sexual behaviours, and hence motivating desirable behaviour change. The game also uses the addictive concept of the popular ping-pong game and the principles of game-based learning to engage users in the game while persuading them to refrain from risky sexual behaviours/practices.","PeriodicalId":186364,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Second African Conference for Human Computer Interaction: Thriving Communities","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-12-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123365362","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The system takes into consideration, users' privacy while providing them with a personalized persuasive display of their performance report. It offers users opportunities to learn from other users' performances, compares their performance with others, as well as receive recognition for performing a target behavior. This, in turn, motivates users to change/improve their attitude towards waste management and promote a clean environment. More importantly, we show how persuasive systems can be designed to provide a personalized display of individual performances relative to others while preserving users' identities.","PeriodicalId":186364,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Second African Conference for Human Computer Interaction: Thriving Communities","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-12-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130181604","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
