Such applications demand minimal (and possibly distinct) QoS guarantees that must couple the vehicular network. Given that vehicular networks will soon become reality, we demand strategies for planning and managing such networks. In this work we propose Delta (A), a QoS-based strategy for planning the roadside infrastructure supporting a vehicular network. Thus, the network provider may employ our strategy to design a new network, compare the performance of distinct vehicular networks, and even evaluate the adherence between vehicular applications and the network. Delta is based on two metrics: i) connectivity duration, and ii) percentage of vehicles presenting such connectivity duration. For instance, if a given vehicular application requires that 20% of the vehicles are connected during 30% of the trip, we say that such application requires a deployment Delta (0.3, 0.2). Complementary, we also present Delta-g, a greedy heuristic for solving Delta. A deployment Delta (0.1, 0.1) requires the coverage of 0.09% of the road network, while a deployment Delta (0.9, 0.9) requires 21.67% of coverage.","PeriodicalId":186097,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE Symposium on Computers and Communication (ISCC)","volume":"103 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-07-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123653971","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Recent research focuses on the conversion of typical power grid to Smart Grid (SG) where energy generation is decentralized. In this regard Power Line Communications (PLC) is a vital part of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) within the SG. This paper presents the analysis and modeling of different channels i.e., Low Voltage (LV), Medium Voltage (MV) and High Voltage (HV) transmission lines for Narrowband Power Line Communications (NB-PLC) using transmission line theory. Most of the literature regarding power line channel modeling deals with the statistical approaches which are relatively inaccurate as they provide a partial analysis of power line channel models which includes solely multipath effects. A comprehensive investigation has been carried out by evaluating and comparing the behaviors of LV, MV and HV channel models. A consequence for the validity of this research is to facilitate the International standardization process of various power line transfer functions especially in Asian countries where a lot more research is needed in the area of power line communications. Moreover characteristics of constant and frequency selective impedances of various channel models have been evaluated.","PeriodicalId":186097,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE Symposium on Computers and Communication (ISCC)","volume":"74 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-07-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116996764","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One of the most important requirements in MCS is maximizing the effectiveness of the data gathering campaign. In fact, also due to the initial low penetration rate of MCS apps and to avoid making the MCS process cumbersome to users, only a small portion of the whole citizenship can be involved in such campaign, while most citizens are not part of the process. This paper proposes a novel approach that combines participatory and opportunistic techniques to amplify the amount of data harvested from the crowd. The core idea is that people with similar interests, such as employees of the same company, students or friends tend to meet more frequently with respect to people with different interests. Accordingly, it is possible to opportunistically involve in the crowd sensing loop people in the volunteers' neighborhood. Following that main design guideline, our work assesses the SOcial amplification FActor (SOFA) that allows to increase the number of samples retrievable during a crowd sensing campaign. We show the benefits of SOFA by using the ParticipAct MCS platform and we analyze three different application scenarios. Highly realistic simulation results, based on ParticipAct mobility traces, show the advantages of SOFA, with an amplification factor increasing up to 4.45.","PeriodicalId":186097,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE Symposium on Computers and Communication (ISCC)","volume":"19 12","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-07-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120845350","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, autonomy of the vehicle and lack of recharging stations are barriers that need to be overcome in order to make the service reliable and broadly accepted. To tackle this problem, French GreenFeed project is working to define and implement an interoperable and universal architecture to allow EV-recharge roaming. In this work, we consider such architecture and focus on issues faced by the e-mobility operator (EMO) and identified by the GreenFeed project. The EMO, a key actor in the architecture, maintains contracts with EV users to allow EV recharge at any geographical place (recharge roaming) through agreements with charging infrastructure operators. The interest of the EMO is to schedule the recharge demands and fulfil the contracts while maximizing its revenue. We analyse different online EV recharge scheduling under different pricing models, agreed between the EV users and the EMO, to study their impact on the EMO's revenues. In this analysis, we assume recharges arriving at random times and requesting a certain amount of energy during a fixed time period. We simulate a scenario with real day-ahead hourly electricity prices over two years and different scheduling polices to illustrate the feasibility of online recharge scheduling.","PeriodicalId":186097,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE Symposium on Computers and Communication (ISCC)","volume":"87 11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-07-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131249845","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To deliver high quality cloud services and provide features such as reduced costs and availability to customers, a cloud, like any other computational system, needs to be properly managed in accordance with its characteristics (e.g., scalability, elasticity, timeliness). In this scenario, cloud monitoring is a key to achieve it. To properly work, cloud monitoring systems need to meet several requirements such as scalability, accuracy, and timeliness. This paper aims to unveil the trade-off between timeliness and scalability. Evaluations demonstrate the mutual influence between scalability and timeliness based on monitoring parameters (e.g., monitoring topologies, frequency sampling). Results show that non-deep monitoring topologies and decreasing the frequency sampling assist to reduce the mutual influence between timeliness and scalability.","PeriodicalId":186097,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE Symposium on Computers and Communication (ISCC)","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-07-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128874682","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

By employing two energy optimization heuristics we determine operational profiles for the network BSs under various traffic loads and examine their impact on handoff signaling rate and achievable throughput. The obtained simulation results exhibit that the proposed BS operational profiles yield quite satisfactory energy saving gains compared to Full Operational Topology (FOT) networks in all examined scenarios, without degradation of the network's handoff signaling rate and achievable throughput of the mobile subscribers.","PeriodicalId":186097,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE Symposium on Computers and Communication (ISCC)","volume":"48 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-07-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126266432","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore, and in order to take advantage of the benefits from these transportation systems, the development of standards that meet the specific characteristics of vehicular networks was required. The \"Wireless Access in Vehicular Environments\" (WAVE) was developed in order to fulfill this need. This standard presents an architecture based on a division into multiple channels, which are set for certain types of applications, and it uses a switching mechanism for the selection of channels, since only one channel is active at a given time. However, in certain scenarios, this channel switching mechanism introduces an undesirable effect that allows different vehicles to transmit simultaneously, thus resulting in collisions. This work proposes a solution to this problem with the development of a mechanism based on the recalculation of the transmission delay, which will work along with other features, such as the broadcast suppression mechanism, in order to ensure greater performance in transmissions.","PeriodicalId":186097,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE Symposium on Computers and Communication (ISCC)","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-07-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122189064","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

SDN is an emerging network technology and gradually gaining adoption worldwide. However, during the technology transition period, which may last several years from now on, inevitably SDN switches and legacy switches will need to coexist in a network. In a legacy network with loops, the IEEE 802.11D distributed spanning tree protocol is used to construct a spanning tree to avoid the packet broadcast storm problem. In an SDN network, the SDN controller can use the collected global knowledge of the network topology to centrally construct a spanning tree to solve this problem. However, so far there is no scheme to integrate together the spanning trees separately built in multiple isolated legacy networks and isolated SDN networks to build an optimal spanning tree across the hybrid network. Our scheme presented in this paper is the first scheme designed and implemented for this purpose. In this paper, we used the EstiNet OpenFlow network simulator and emulator to simulate hybrid networks. Our scheme is implemented as a module of the Floodlight SDN controller to construct an optimal spanning tree over the simulated hybrid networks. Our simulation results show that our scheme can correctly generate an optimal spanning tree based on two performance metrics: the average path latency and the average path throughput of a spanning tree.","PeriodicalId":186097,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE Symposium on Computers and Communication (ISCC)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-07-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128007278","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
