Funtua) to applied nitrogen (0, 30, 60 and 90 kg N ha -1 ) and phosphorus (0, 30 and 60 kg P ha -1 ) fertilizers. N significantly (P -1 compared to the control. N also significantly (P -1 significantly increased grain yield by 30, 40 and 50 %, compared with the control. Nitrogen x Phosphorus interaction significantly (P -1 ), achene weight (27.99 g) and second highest head weight (63.76 g). Consequently, it was concluded that since application of N60P30 resulted in optimum performance of sunflower, these rates are therefore, recommended for sunflower production in the forest-savanna transition zone of south-west Nigeria. Both trials were carried out during the 2001-2002 and 2002-2003 dry seasons. N.P.K. application at 60 kg/ha resulted in a significantly higher yield while a significant reduction in the number of bolters was observed at 120 kg/ha NPK. The effect of NPK on storability of onion was not significant. Poultry manure at 5 or 10 t/ha significantly increased both marketable number and yield of onion. The higher dose of 10 t/ha significantly reduced loss after 5 months of storage by 19.96 % in 2002 and 37.12 % during 2003. Cassava planted at 10,000 plants ha-1 mixed with fluted pumpkin at 40,000 and 26,667 plants ha -1 with 3 weeding regimes: 3 weeks after planting (WAP); 3 and 8 WAP; and 3, 8 and 12 WAP were evaluated. The results showed that cassava (10,000 plants ha-1) intercropped with fluted pumpkin (40,000 plants ha -1 ) weeded at 3, 8 and 12 WAP produced the best weed control and the least weed dry weight. Greater weights of cassava tuber (22.40 and 24.53 t ha -1 in 2001 and 2002 respectively) and fresh fluted pumpkin leaves (110.1 and 111.2 t ha -1 in 2001 and 2002 respectively) were obtained with weeding carried out at 3 and 8 WAP which were not significantly different from those in weeding regimes of 3, 8 and 12 WAP at a mixture of cassava and fluted pumpkin (26,667 plants ha -1 ) in the two growing seasons. In the 2003/2004 season, organic fertilizer was applied at 1.5 and 3.0 t ha -1 . In the 2004/2005 season, it was applied at 5 – 20 t ha -1 . In both seasons, no fertilizer plots or those which received 500 kg N ha-1 sourced from inorganic fertilizer served as controls. In both cropping seasons, the effects of the different rates of organic fertilizer on the vine length, number of leaves, leaf area, number of branches and number of tendrils of passion fruit did not differ significantly from one another or no fertilizer application. Dry matter production followed similar trends. However, except for dry weight of stem and root, inorganic fertilizer produced significantly larger growth attributes than organic fertilizer and no fertilizer application. This indicates that 20 t ha -1 of organic fertilizer is sub-optimal for vigorous growth of passion fruit. Keywords : fertilizer, passion fruit, vegetative growth. Therefore, there is a need for improvement in the nutritional quality of available food sources and/or fortification/supplementation of available food material and/or feeding behaviour to improve the nutrition especially of the low-income earners. This study focused on the acceptability of edible mushroom as a dietary supplement. Virtually all the respondents (96.6 %) know what mushrooms are, but only half (55.2 %) consumes it. Less than half of the respondents (34.5 %) know the dietary components/benefits of mushroom. A greater majority of the respondents (79.3 %) will readily buy/consume mushroom if it has both high nutritional and medicinal value, while 69.0 percent are afraid because mushrooms could be poisonous. Chi square test indicated that there is no significant relationship between the level of education of the respondents' and consumption (Chi 2 = .945; P = 002), awareness (Chi 2 = 31.302; P = .259), the nutritive value (Chi 2 = 8.937; P = .177) of mushrooms. A semi-structured interview schedule was used to collect data from a sample of 60 respondents. Percentages, weighted mean scores and factor analysis were used to analyze the data collected. The findings of the study indicated that majority of the farmers had strong positive attitude towards the project. The findings also showed that while majority of the adult males performed the following activities: application of herbicides, application of insecticides, land acquisition and field establishment in the fadama farms, adult females and children dominated in such activities as sowing and transplanting of seedlings, watering of crop land, weeding, harvesting, processing and marketing of produce. However, farmers' level of participation was high with respect to only three technologies, namely, use of improved varieties, optimum plant population and timely planting of crops. The results further showed that the major constraint to the implementation of the project as was perceived by the farmers was finance/governance problem. The study therefore recommended that efforts should be geared towards encouraging the active participation of the farmers in the project through the provision of timely credit and adequate irrigation facilities for their farming activities.
