It accounts for about 2-3% of adult solid malignancies, with a reported worldwide annual increase of 1.5-5.5%. Surgical intervention is the primary treatment for early-stage RCC, however nephrectomy alone offers limited benefit in patients with metastatic disease, except for palliative reasons. The aim of this review is to study the role of surgical intervention in the treatment algorithm of metastatic renal cell carcinoma.","PeriodicalId":185530,"journal":{"name":"Hellenic Urology","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-10-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115022153","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These options differ in terms of side effects. Knowledge of the side effects of different management options is crucial for making treatment decisions, as they can negatively impact on patient’s quality of life. Methods: We conducted a literature review for articles concerning treatment and quality of life for clinically localised prostate cancer to access the impact of different treatments on patient’s quality of life. Results: We identified 5 prospective randomised comparative studies reporting QoL outcomes, recruiting a total of 2933 patients. Conclusion: Surgery seems to produce sexual and urinary incontinence deterioration, while external beam radiotherapy can cause bowel dysfunction and bother. Men managed with active surveillance have good overall quality of life scores, which seem to be better than those of patients undergoing radical treatments.","PeriodicalId":185530,"journal":{"name":"Hellenic Urology","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-10-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122319924","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Early diagnosis is of vital importance for the successful management of these patients and depends on the type, anatomic location and length of ureteral deficit. Preoperative placement of ureteral stent does not seem to reduce incidence of these cases. For extended length traumas, surgical techniques like Boari flap and Psoas hitch have been reported, in order to reconstruct ureter and accomplish ureteroneocystostomy. We describe the case of a patient, who presented with a deficit of 13 cm after sigmoidectomy. We performed a combination of Boari flap and Psoas hitch successfully and restored the continuity of urinary tract.","PeriodicalId":185530,"journal":{"name":"Hellenic Urology","volume":"104 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-10-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115798579","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

An unusual case of coexistence of matrix stone with a conventional, calcified stone is reported. A 63-year-old female was admitted to our department because of a sizable, radiopaque, right renal stone. Her medical history included recurrent urinary tract infections. Preoperative Computed Tomography scan demonstrated a 2 cm calculus and a radiolucent, soft tissue mass in the dilated, right renal pelvis, without enhancement after the intravenous administration of contrast agent. The patient underwent right Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy. Intraoperatively, we found that the renal pelvis was occupied by matrix stone with a centrally located core of solid calculus.","PeriodicalId":185530,"journal":{"name":"Hellenic Urology","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129274458","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Minimal invasive surgery is a preferred option in those cases. Laparoscopic partial nephrectomy has equivalent oncological results with open partial nephrectomy, offering in the same time all the advantages of minimal invasive surgery. The purpose of our study is to present our initial experience in laparoscopic partial nephrectomy. Material and Methods : Between May 2015 and December 2017, 68 selected patients with renal masses smaller than 7cm observed by CT scan, were submitted to laparoscopic partial nephrectomy. Patient demographics, preoperative tumor characteristics and detailed operative, postoperative and pathologic data were collected. Results : Mean age of patients is 56,1 years (44-71), mean diameter of renal tumor 5, 3 cm (3,3 - 7,4 cm).36 patients had a right partial nephrectomy and 32 a left one, with no intraoperative complications. In four patients a laparoscopic radical nephrectomy was done, there are no cases of conversion to open surgery. The operation time ranged from 90 to 211 min, estimated blood loss (EBL) ranged from 30 to 300 ml and warm ischemia time (WIT) ranged from 5 to 31 min. Overall, four cases of postoperative complications CDC ≥ 3 were observed. One patient presented with a ureteric stricture and 3 with bleeding which necessitate angiographic intervention. There was one patient with a microscopic positive surgical margin and all patients are disease free during follow up (3-20 months, mean 12,2 months). Mean serum creatinine level has increased 23 mcmol/L (0-114). Conclusion : Laparoscopic partial nephrectomy is a safe and feasible approach in small renal masses, offering all the advantages of minimal invasive surgery","PeriodicalId":185530,"journal":{"name":"Hellenic Urology","volume":"48 3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117312148","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
