(family Arecaceae) has been used in folkloric medicine as wound healing agent. However, valuable scientific evidence of its traditional use has not yet been verified. This study evaluates the wound healing activity of C. nucifera endosperm on the excised wound in BALB/c mice. Three concentrations (30%, 60% and 90%) of C. nucifera endosperm were prepared as ointment using petroleum jelly as base. The safety of the formulation was evaluated using dermal irritation test. The prepared concentrations, Solcoseryl® ointment (positive control) and petroleum jelly (negative control) were topically applied daily on the excised wound and observed for wound healing activity for 14 days, with histological evaluations at days 7 and 14. The 90% C. nucifera endosperm ointment showed no clinical signs of dermal irritation during the study duration, confirming the safety for topical usage of all the C. nucifera formulation. All groups demonstrated scab formation and wound contraction at days 7 and 9, respectively. Healing of the wounds, manifested by distinct wound contraction, was observed at day 14, with 60% C. nucifera endosperm exhibiting significant activity compared to the negative control (p=0.009) and untreated (p=0.046) groups. It also displayed the highest activity, with notable similarity in the activity of Solcoseryl®, and revealed the most organized epidermis comparable to normal skin. This study validates the folkloric use of C. nucifera endosperm in facilitating wound healing process, with 60% C. nucifera endosperm exhibiting the most desirable activity.","PeriodicalId":18529,"journal":{"name":"Marmara Pharmaceutical Journal","volume":"50 1","pages":"103-109"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-01-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"86753055","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this study, the antioxidant properties of different extracts from P. leucophracta were investigated. Antioxidant properties were evaluated by different assays including free radical scavenging (DPPH assay), reducing power (potassium ferricyanide method), β-carotene/linoleic acid, metal chelating and phosphomolybdenum. Moreover, total phenolic and flavonoid contents were detected for each extracts. Total phenolic and flavonoid contents were detected as 30.86-55.00 mg GAE/g extract and 4.93-26.09 mg QE/g extract, respectively. The methanol and water extracts exhibited higher DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl) radical scavenging and reducing power abilities as compared to ethyl acetate and hexane extracts. The best activity was observed by the hexane extract in β-carotene/linoleic acid assay (94.35% at 2 mg/mL). In metal chelating ability, those samples exhibited the following order (at 0.25 mg/mL concentration): Water (73.90%)>Hexane(64.87%)>Ethyl acetate(4.88%)>Methanol (2.28%). Based on our results, P. leucophracta may be utilized as a natural source of antioxidant compounds in food and pharmaceutical areas.","PeriodicalId":18529,"journal":{"name":"Marmara Pharmaceutical Journal","volume":"43 1","pages":"86-90"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-01-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"75589138","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

(Diptera: Culicidae) is an important vector of West Nile virus in many parts of the world. In this research, the essential oils obtained from Nepeta cadmea Boiss. (endemic for Turkey) and Pimpinella anisum L. were examined for larvicidal activity against second-third instar larvae of Cx. pipiens. The essential oils were distilled from aerial parts of N. cadmea and seeds of P. anisum by water distillation. The chemical composition of these oils was determined by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The lethal concentration 50 and 90 values of these essential oils were 28.7 and 49.51 ppm, and 39.82 and 74.57 ppm, respectively. As a result, both essential oils were found highly toxic to larvae of Cx. pipiens. Our results showed that the essential oils obtained from N. cadmea and P. anisum may be suitable for the development of potential new botanical insecticides.","PeriodicalId":18529,"journal":{"name":"Marmara Pharmaceutical Journal","volume":"20 1","pages":"322-327"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"85333478","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The poorly soluble drug atorvastatin was adsorbed on and/or into SYLOID® 244 FP in the ratios 1:1, 1:1.1.5, 1:2, 1:2.5, 1:3 and 1:3.5 via a wetness impregnation method. The absence of crystalline form and presence of hydrogen bond interaction between atorvastatin and SYLOID® 244 FP is done by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The atorvastatin loaded matrix lacked in the crystalline form of atorvastatin and it showed improvement in the dissolution rate of ATC. The flowability of the atorvastatin loaded matrix powder was evaluated by bulk density, Carr’s index and angle of repose. This matrix was then processed into a tablet by direct compression method. A 32 full factorial design was applied to investigate the combined effect of two formulation variables volume of ethanol and amount of SYLOID® 244 FP. The tablets were evaluated for hardness, friability, drug content and drug dissolution studies. The solubility of atorvastatin-loaded matrix was increased up to 4.28 times. Atorvastatin tablet prepared from drug-loaded silica may provide a feasible approach for development of an oral formulation for this poorly water-soluble drug.","PeriodicalId":18529,"journal":{"name":"Marmara Pharmaceutical Journal","volume":"37 1","pages":"249-258"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"84059752","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The aim of this study was to evaluate the sensitizing effect of cerium oxide nanoparticles (CNPs) on non-small lung cancer (A-549) cells exposure to IR. A-549 cells were treated with CNPs and exposed to IR at dose 2 Gy. The radiosensitizing effect of CNPs was evaluated by clonogenic assay and flowcytometry. The findings of this study showed that CNPs reduced the frequencies of A-549 colony when these cells were exposed to IR. CNPs treatment prior exposure to IR significantly increased the IR-induced apoptotic incidences in A-549 cells. The present study demonstrates that CNPs to be an effective sensitizer on apoptosis and cell death induced by IR in A-549 cells.","PeriodicalId":18529,"journal":{"name":"Marmara Pharmaceutical Journal","volume":"23 1","pages":"307-313"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"83707768","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
