In particular, the lack of standard mechanisms that allow for the comparison of cloud service specifications against user requirements taking into account the implicit uncertainty and vagueness is a major hindrance during the cloud service evaluation and selection. In this paper, we discuss the Preference-based cLoud Service Recommender (PuLSaR) that uses a holistic multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) approach for offering optimisation as brokerage service. The specification and implementation details of this dedicated software are thoroughly discussed while the background method used is summarised. Both method and brokerage service allow for the multi-objective assessment of cloud services in a unified way, taking into account precise and imprecise metrics and dealing with their fuzziness.

The virtual compute infrastructures of IaaS provides enables enterprises to build large scale, geo-graphically distributed applications. Each IaaS provider offers virtual machines that can communicate with each other over a virtual network. However, each IaaS provider exposes subtle differences in the support for virtual machines, storage, networking, routing, etc. In this position paper we argue that configuration management is an enabler for multi-cloud environments by making abstraction of the above mentioned differences in the IaaS platforms, through configuration management. We illustrate this claim by using configuration management to address the challenges associated with multi-cloud environments.

But rather than focus on current kinds of intermediary role, it is more constructive to consider the kinds of brokerage capability that could be offered in the future, which go far beyond the integration, aggregation and customization services available today. This paper identifies advanced capabilities for cloud service governance, quality assurance and optimization that will be critical in catalyzing the emergence of cloud service ecosystems, environments in which all parties will find their symbiotic niches. It shows the path whereby a platform provider could evolve to become the hub of a cloud service ecosystem, through gradually taking on more of these advanced brokerage capabilities. The paper provides an overview of work conducted by the EU FP7 Broker@Cloud project towards realizing these advanced brokerage capabilities.

However, current data distribution techniques used in Internet wide computing platforms to distribute the high volumes of information, which are needed to run MapReduce jobs, are naive, and therefore need to be re-thought.\u0000 Thus, we present a computing platform called SCADAMAR that runs MapReduce jobs over the Internet and provides two new main contributions: i) improves data distribution by using the BitTorrent protocol to distribute all data, and ii) improves intermediate data availability by replicating tasks or data through nodes in order to avoid losing intermediate data and consequently preventing big delays on the MapReduce overall execution time.\u0000 Along with the design of our solution, we present an extensive set of performance results which confirm the usefulness of the above mentioned contributions, improved data distribution and availability, thus making our platform a feasible approach to run MapReduce jobs.

The diversity in cloud services is a challenge for automated decision making in the multi-cloud environment. These decisions become more complex when the application's requirements and the application owner's constraints need to be satisfied throughout the application life cycle.\u0000 This paper presents the concept of an Adaptive Decision Making Broker (ADMB) for multi-cloud management. ADMB aims to provide multi-criteria decision making using machine learning in a multi-cloud environment. In this context, we believe that our proposed methodology has the potential to provide optimal solutions as well as handle trade-offs between the functional and the non-functional requirements of given application.

Assigning workloads to the most appropriate processing units is therefore a challenging task. In this paper we show how in the context of heterogeneous data centers power consumption can be used as a metric to drive scheduling.\u0000 We study the performance and energy efficiency of a set of heterogeneous architectures for multiple micro-benchmarks (stressing CPU, memory and disk) and for a real-world cloud application. We observe from our results that some architectures are more energy efficient for disk-intense workloads, whereas others are better for CPU-intense workloads. This study provides the basis for workload characterization and cross-cloud scheduling under constraints of energy efficiency.

In these federations CSPs (cloud service providers) can use resources of other CSPs in the case of a lack of local resources or they can add remote services to their catalogue. Cloud federations again demand for cloud brokers which offer the resources and services of different CSPs transparently to the users. Research of cloud federations in the real world is very complex and expensive as distributed hard- and software scenarios are needed. Therefore we present FederatedCloudSim, a very flexible cloud simulation framework that can be used to simulate many federated cloud scenarios while respecting SLAs (service level agreements). In this paper we also present first simulation results and explain different simulation scenarios.
