The various continuous countercurrent and crosscurrent chromato-graphic techniques have been reviewed and judged according to their merits. The latest developments on a preparative/production scale semicontinuous chroma-tographic refiner (SCCR), consisting of 12 columns each of 5.4 cm i.d. × 75 cm long and packed with calcium charged resin, are reported. When the production of high fructrose corn syrup was carried out using industrial barley syfup, product throughputs of 32.3 kg sugar solids/m3 resin/h were obtained, the fructose-rich product purity was over 90% with a concentration of 12.96% w/v, and glucose-rich product contained only 6.69% fructose and had a concentration of 25.4% w/v. This model is based on the modern theory of nonlinear hyperbolic systems of partial differential equations. It accounts for the nonlinear effects due 1) to the thermodynamics of solute-stationary phase equilibrium (i.e., the nonlinearity of the equilibrium isotherm), 2) to the interaction between radial mass transfer and flow velocity (the sorption effect in gas chromatography), and 3) to the pressure gradient along the column (in gas chromatography). Numerical results are obtained by using the Godunov method. It is shown that the loadability of a column does not depend on the size of the particles for a given efficiency. In order to obtain the maximum efficacity from the pumping system, the design of the column must take into account the characteristics of the pumping system, particularly the flow rate. It is shown that a convenient particle size is in the range 10 to 20 μm. Small particles are associated with shorter and bulkier columns than large particles, while at the same time giving less back pressure (in order to generate a given plate number at a given flow rate). The results for a pure compound and for a mixture are compared. When a pure compound is injected, the efficiency of both columns decreases with increasing sample size. Although the 10-μm particle column is notably more efficient than the 40-μm particle column, for very large samples the plate numbers of both columns eventually become similar. When a binary mixture of isomers is injected, however, the 10-μm particle column provides a much larger yield and production of pure isomers than expected. When the sample size of this mixture is increased, the first eluted peak broadens to a lesser extent than if it were the peak of a pure component. The apparatus holds a coil holder in such a way that the axis of the holder is positioned perpendicular to and at a fixed distance away from the centrifuge axis. In maintaining the above orientation the holder undergoes synchronous planetary motion, i.e., revolution around the central axis-of the centrifuge and rotation about its own axis at the same angular velocity.
