Secondly, the properties of poly propylene laminated paper (PPLP) as used in mass impregnated (MI), HVDC cables are investigated. Finally, partial discharge (PD) measurements are made under DC conditions in order to assess the suitability of this method for online condition monitoring of HVDC assets. In-house fabrication of model HVDC cables makes it possible to deliberately insert defects into the samples during manufacture. The PD behavior of mass impregnated samples is thereby compared with dry lapped ones and it is shown that dry samples (or dry regions within a cable) exhibit higher rates of PD but with decreased average PD charge. In addition, DC PD is measured for specimens that are subjected to bending. In this study no clear change in DC PD is observed due to bending (even up to the point of failure due to breakdown). Dissection of a sample that has broken down reveals the extensive damage caused by the bending. It is concluded that DC PD tests are relatively insensitive to cable bending defects and that fluid impregnant may further mask these. The concept of Repetitive PDIV (RPDIV) has been proposed as a replacement of PDIV for tests performed under surges or repetitive square waves. RPDIV estimates exceed the PDIV level. The difference might depend on the surge repetition frequency, possibly providing contradicting results using different high voltage sources. Thus, the industry is concerned about the use of RPDIV in place of PDIV and the possible implications for the quality of the stators. Also, little has been discussed about the randomness of measurements and how to treat data using appropriate statistical tools. In this paper, we shall show results of PDIV and RPDIV tests performed on twisted pairs subjected to AC sinusoidal voltages, surges from a commercial surge generator, and unipolar square waves from a high voltage MOSFET. Tests are performed on ten twisted pairs to derive the distribution of RPDIV estimates and compare the differences using statistical tools. In order to detect possible damage, dissipation factor as well as partial discharge measurements are performed. Furthermore modal analysis is used to identify the appearance of defects. The results are set in context to previous studies to analyze multifactor aging mechanisms in highly stressed electrical insulation systems used in rotating machines. In order to utilize the historical normal state data to identify efficiently whether the new data are abnormal, a power transformer abnormal state quick recognition model based on improved K-means clustering, is proposed in this paper. To solve the problems of traditional K-means clustering, an improvement about choosing K value and initial cluster center based on data density and distance is proposed. The improvement can make K-means clustering get stable cluster centers and K value to greatly decrease the times of iterations and make the process of clustering quicker, more stable and efficient. Most of the power transformer data are normal state data. And the normal state data gradually change according to a certain trend while the abnormal state data change rapidly. Based on the historical normal data and improved K-means clustering, a quick recognition model for power transformer is established. According to the clustering results of normal data, thresholds can be calculated to identify new data. Recent experimental results on maximum interruptible di/dt in a model circuit breaker show that the interruption capability of CO2is about 60% that of pure SF6. A computational study of the interruption process in the above model circuit breaker with CO2as the working gas has been carried out to affirm the experimental interruption capability of CO2. Through detailed analysis of the results mechanisms responsible for the difference in the interruption capabilities of the two gases are identified and the performance dependence on material properties discussed. These fast-switching components induce over-voltages, which allow partial discharges to incept and lead to an erosion of the insulation materials. Various ageing mechanisms exist and depend on multiple parameters, but the influence of voltage slope, and therefore rise time, is a controversial subject which could require some further examination. Thus, it may be interesting to determine if these parameters have a direct impact on the ageing of EIS or if they only contribute to it indirectly, while their own effect would be less significant. To clarify this point, accelerated tests were performed and aimed at the comparison between the ageing of samples supplied by sinusoidal and square-wave stresses. The amplitude and frequency of the signals were the same, with a duty cycle of 50% in order to study the influence of the voltage slope only. Several levels of stress and frequencies were selected for the analysis and with additional purpose of reduction of tests duration. The content of ß nucleating agent is from 0.1 to 0.3 wt%. The crystal form, crystallinity were characterized by wide angel X-ray diffractometer, differential scanning calorimeter. The thermal stimulated current test, space charge test and DC electrical breakdown test at room temperature and 90 □ were conducted to characterize the electrical properties of these samples. The experimental results show that the TMB-5 could form ß-crystal and more content of TMB-5 more ß-crystal in PEC. At room temperature and 90□, the DC electrical breakdown strength of 0.1 wt% content 13-nucleated PEC increased 17 % and 14 % higher than pure PEC. Collecting the historical data of dissolved gas content from the same type transformers, the probability density function and cumulative distribution function based on two-parameter Weibull model is established to acquire the distribution law for each gas. The distribution probability between different condition levels is counted to calculate condition threshold by inverse cumulative distribution function, and the condition membership functions based on condition threshold are established. According to the historical data, important weight of each gas is quantified by entropy weight method. Finally, the weighted method is applied to calculate the confidence probability of all the condition levels after obtaining the monitoring data of gas content, and the condition of transformers is determined. They are expected to operate for several decades without faults and possibly without relevant unscheduled maintenance practice. The new approach is developed for reducing time based maintenance and, increasing condition based maintenance and to introduce predictive maintenance as well. The aim of predictive maintenance is first to predict when transformer failure might occur, and secondly, to prevent occurrence of the failure by performing maintenance. Diagnostic information can be evaluated individually or better by a complex algorithm which merges all the single inputs and their Rate of Increase (RoI) creating a mono-dimensional figure called Health Index (HI).
