Fish is currently in greater demand as it is a good source of protein, which is necessary for maintaining the health of muscles, organs, and blood vessels. Due to their sensitive tissues and aquatic environment, fish are especially prone to microbial infections. It has been suggested that one way to assess the quality of fish is through the monitoring of these bacteria. Objectives: The current study aimed to examine the microbiological quality of fresh and frozen fishes. Materials and Methods: A comparative study was conducted to evaluate the microbial quality of fresh and frozen common carps to raise food safety concerns, Iraq-Erbil city. A total of 50 samples of fishes were collected from local markets and breeding ponds from September 2021 to January 2022. The most probable number (MPN) method was used for the estimation of the total coliform, whereas the horizontal method was used for the enumeration of Salmonella spp. Results: In this study, 53% of frozen samples contaminated with the coliform, whereas 15% of the fresh common carps were contaminated with coliform and passed the acceptable range (<100 MPN/g). Salmonella spp. was not found in any fresh samples, although it was recorded in 20% of the frozen common carps. Conclusion: Further investigations are required with molecular techniques including polymerase chain reaction to determine the species and type of contamination in frozen fishes.","PeriodicalId":18326,"journal":{"name":"Medical Journal of Babylon","volume":"20 1","pages":"254 - 257"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45285605","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In it, Muslims abstain from eating, drinking, and having sexual intercourse from dawn to sunset every day for the whole holy (Ramadan) month. Objectives: This study was conducted to assess the risk impact and benefits of Ramadan fasting on patients with diabetes in a sample of Iraqi patients. Materials and Methods: This is a cross-sectional prospective study involving 106 patients with type 2 diabetes who decide to fast Ramadan enrolled in this study and parameters gathered before and after Ramadan to identify anthropometric and biochemical changes that develop throughout the whole month. Results: More than 96% of patients fasted for more than 25 days of Ramadan. Hypoglycemia developed in 17% of patients. It occurred significantly in those with a history of mild and severe hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia >300 mg/dL in the preceding 3 months before Ramadan and those with comorbidities especially, stroke, chronic kidney disease (CKD), and hypertension. Following Ramadan, there was a significant reduction in HbA1c, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, and significant weight reduction. Conclusion: Most patients with diabetes can fast for more than 25 days during the whole Ramadan month. Ramadan fasting can be considered as safe in patients with type 2 diabetes without comorbidities (like CKD, stroke). Ramadan fasting reduces the glycated hemoglobin, reduces body weight, and reduces blood pressure in patients with diabetes.","PeriodicalId":18326,"journal":{"name":"Medical Journal of Babylon","volume":"20 1","pages":"352 - 356"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47212452","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Several nanofillers have been added to address this problem. Objectives: The aim of the current study was to investigate the incorporating of rice husk-derived silica particles into high impact heat cure acrylic resin to improve its physical properties. Materials and Methods: According to the results of the pilot study, high impact heat cure resin was mixed with 1% and 3% (by weight) of silica particles which derived from a natural rice husk source. The study’s samples were divided into two main groups (n = 10 samples for each group) based on the tests that were done. Each group was then divided into three smaller groups, (0% control, 1%, and 3%) depending on the amount of natural silica particles added (n = 10 samples for each subgroup). Results: The results showed that adding 3% silica particles derived from natural rice husk increased the roughness and wettability values significantly (P < 0.01), whereas adding 1% silica particles decreased the roughness and contact angle values significantly (P < 0.01) compared to the control group (0 wt.%). Conclusion: The incorporation of 1 wt.% and 3 wt.% silica nanoparticles derived from rice husk was found to enhance the surface roughness and wettability of high impact acrylic resin. With 1 wt.% and 3 wt.% rice husk derived silica produced the best outcomes.","PeriodicalId":18326,"journal":{"name":"Medical Journal of Babylon","volume":"20 1","pages":"308 - 314"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48846212","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The impacts of VA on adjuvant-induced arthritis (AIA) in rats were investigated. Objectives: To investigate the possible osteoprotective and anti-inflammatory effects of VA in rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Materials and Methods: AIA was achieved through subdermal injection of complete Freund’s adjuvant (CFA) into the rat hindpaw. Forty Swiss albino rats were recruited in this study. These rats were divided into four groups: the normal control group received 0.1 mL phosphate buffer saline intraperitoneally each day, the positive control group received 0.75 mg/kg intraperitoneal once weekly dose of methotrexate, the AIA group received CFA without treatment, and the VA group received 300 mg/kg/day intraperitoneal dose of VA. Statistical analysis was done, and a P value of less than 0.05 was considered as statistically significant. Results: VA (300 mg/kg body weight) administered intraperitoneally could significantly reverse the effect of adjuvant arthritis on bone mineral density and bone mineral content in addition to an improvement in bone formation markers (osteoprotegerin, osteoprotegerin/RANKL ratio). Serum levels of tumor necrosis factor and interleukin 1b were significantly reduced by VA treatment. Reduced serum malondialdehyde with the elevated superoxide dismutase level was also achieved. Conclusion: These findings support the evidence that VA has a positive effect on bone anabolism and its anti-inflammatory properties could be considered as a bonus in inflammatory disorders induced bone loss such as RA.","PeriodicalId":18326,"journal":{"name":"Medical Journal of Babylon","volume":"20 1","pages":"298 - 307"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44811905","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Obesity and overweight are terms used to describe abnormal or excessive weight growth that is harmful to one’s health. Objectives: The aim of this study was to measure the androgen receptor (AR), total and free testosterone, and dehydroepiandrosterone sulfates (DHEA-S) levels in the serum of Iraqi women who were having trouble getting pregnant and study the change of these parameters in the case of obesity and infertility. Materials and Methods: The case–control group was made up of 45 additional, presumably healthy women, whereas the sick group was made up of 45 obese infertile women. A study was carried out in the Babylon teaching hospital for maternity and children in Hilla city and private clinics from July to January 2022. An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was used to evaluate the serum concentrations of DHEA-S, total testosterone, and free testosterone (ELISA). SPSS software was used to conduct the statistical analysis. Results: A considerable drop in total testosterone and AR levels, infertile women exhibited significantly greater serum levels of free testosterone and DHEA-S than the control group (P > 0.05). Conclusion: Infertile women had considerably lower serum levels of total testosterone and ARs and significantly higher serum levels of free testosterone and DHEA-S. On the basis of the results of this investigation, obesity participates in the pathogenesis of infertility.","PeriodicalId":18326,"journal":{"name":"Medical Journal of Babylon","volume":"20 1","pages":"433 - 436"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49669180","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One of the current dental problems is its high prevalence and detrimental consequences on quality of life. An oral candidiasis lesion often develops as a result of the development of a complex biofilm containing Candida albicans and other bacteria. Objectives: The objective of this study was to detect C. albicans virulence gene agglutinin-like sequence 1 and hyphal wall protein 1 (ALS1 and HWP1) by molecular method from clinical oral infection sample. Materials and Methods: One hundred fifty oral swabs were obtained from periodontitis patients who attended to a specific dental health center and outpatient clinics of dentistry in Al-Hillah city, Iraq during the period from April 2022 to September 2022. Patient age ranges from 5 to 72 years. The sample was taken by disposable cotton swabs. This swab was cultured on various culture media including CHROM agar and Sabouraud’s dextrose agar for isolation of C. albicans. After that genomic DNA was extracted from confirmed colony. Virulence genes (ALS1 and HWP1) were detected by polymerase chain reaction technique. Results: The result showed that out of 150 samples 25 (16.66%) belong to C. albicans isolated; also the result showed that ALS1 gene detected in a rate 15 (22.05%) while HWP1 detected in a rate 19 (27.94%). Conclusion: The Als1 and HWP1 virulence genes were expressed in most isolates of C. albicans which suggests that the ALS1 and HWP1 protein play an important role in the pathogenesis of infection.","PeriodicalId":18326,"journal":{"name":"Medical Journal of Babylon","volume":"20 1","pages":"347 - 351"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47505661","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Inflammatory cells, proinflammatory, and immunoregulatory cytokines are all recruited as part of the intricate immunological host response that occurs here; one of these cytokines is interleukin-17A (IL-17A). Objectives: This study aimed to determine the concentration of IL-17A by Enzyme Linked ImmunoSorbent Assay (ELISA) in the saliva of patients with endodontic disease to find the correlation between IL-17A and endodontic disease. Materials and Methods: The samples are collected from 60 patients (n = 60) with an age range of 20–50 years. The samples are collected from specialized dental centers and private clinics throughout the time period (December 2021–February 2022). The control samples are 20 (n = 20). The rate of samples was divided between males and females with ratios of 43.33% and 56.66%, respectively. Results: The result showed that the concentration of IL-17A was increased in patients compared with the control P-value (0.000). The difference in age showed no effect on the results of this study. Conclusion: This study showed that proinflammatory cytokines start immune responses in pulp tissues after bacterial infections and imply IL-17A endodontic illness.","PeriodicalId":18326,"journal":{"name":"Medical Journal of Babylon","volume":"20 1","pages":"430 - 432"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43618809","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, evidence from previous studies provides equivocal results with some data supported the link between dental caries and salivary oxidative stress, while others did not find any relationship. Objectives: This study was designed to investigate the levels of salivary oxidative stress among smokers and non-smokers with dental caries. Study Design: Cross-sectional study. Materials and Methods: One hundred adult males, who visited the Conservative and Operative Clinics at the College of Dentistry, Babylon University, Iraq for the period from November 2021 until April 2022, were recruited in this study and were randomly subdivided into three groups; G1: smokers with dental caries, N = 35; G2: non-smokers with dental caries, N = 35; G3: non-smokers without dental caries (control), N = 30. Markers of salivary total antioxidants (TAC) and Malondialdehyde (MDA) were measured in all studied groups. The potential correlations between these markers and other factors such as smoking duration, number of smoked cigarettes per day, and subject’s age were also measured. Result: The levels of TAC were significantly (P = 0.01) greater in patients with dental caries compared to those levels in a control group, while the levels of salivary MDA were not significantly (P ≥ 0.05) differed among all studied groups. Smoking had no significant (P ≥ 0.05) effects on both markers of oxidative stress (TAC and MDA). All measured correlations between makers of oxidative stress and smoking duration, number of smoked cigarettes per day, and subject’s age were insignificant (P ≥ 0.05). Conclusions: Salivary antioxidants may be involved in the progression of dental caries. However, further studies are needed to establish whether markers of oxidative stress (TAC and MDA) are the causes or results of dental caries.","PeriodicalId":18326,"journal":{"name":"Medical Journal of Babylon","volume":"20 1","pages":"206 - 211"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45162205","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

By getting around several delivery limitations, nanomedicine can effectively increase the efficacy of oral drug administration. According to reports, nanostructures are absorbed 15–250 times more readily than microparticles. Furthermore, nanostructures are constantly used to maintain the release of drugs that are encapsulated to lower doses and dosage frequency, improving patient compliance and reducing adverse effects. Pectin is a biocompatible polysaccharide with a natural biological activity, which pectin in rats with type 2 diabetes was discovered to have potent hypoglycemic, antioxidant, immunomodulating, and anticancer properties that improved diabetic conditions and consequences, reduced insulin resistance, improved blood lipid levels, and reduced liver glycogen content, glucose tolerance, and glucose levels. As a result, the purpose of this article was to evaluate the background materials on the current condition of the scientific literature in this field of study and to review the employment feasibility as well as pectin-modified nanomaterial toward T2DM treatment because it has the ability to reduce insulin secretion and/or blood glucose levels following a sugar load.","PeriodicalId":18326,"journal":{"name":"Medical Journal of Babylon","volume":"20 1","pages":"7 - 12"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41523255","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Many treatment lines are used to treat alopecia areata, but all are palliative. Alternative medicine, like aromatherapy is expected to promote hair growth, but they are still lacking the scientific basis. Hemp oil is one of the aromatherapies that comprises polyunsaturated fat in approximately 76% involving “essential fatty acids” mainly omega-6 fatty acids” and lesser amount of “omega-3 fatty acids.”Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate hemp seed oil effect in the treatment of patients with alopecia areata. Materials and Methods: This was a clinical trial planned to evaluate the efficacy of hemp seed oil in 20 patients with localized alopecia areata for 2 months. Plant material is hemp oil extract, applied at night daily for 2 months. Regrowth of terminal hair was evaluated by clinically and by trichoscope examination to evaluate the pathologic changes response. The assessment was done at 0, 4, and 8 weeks of the treatment. Results: After 8 weeks of the treatment, the response was marked in five (25%) patients, moderate in eight (40%) patients, and mild in two (10%) patients. Five (25%) patients revealed no response. There was a significant increase in the response of patients who were under the marked improvement group between 4 and 8 weeks of treatment (P < 0.05). Conclusion: Hemp seed oil can be considered as a promising therapeutic agent for localized alopecia areata.
