The present study focuses on friction stir welding of cast aluminum alloys (AA356 and AA2014) with a varied range of process parameters, namely, tool pin shape (cylinder, cone, square, and threaded cylinder), tool speed (1800–2100 rpm), and tool feed (5–20 mm min−1). The novelty of the present work spotlights/features the implementation of L16 orthogonal design with the analysis of variance, grey relational analysis, fuzzy logic system, and artificial neural network approaches to contemplate the weld quality of cast joints. The microstructural analysis and grain size estimation is comprehended in the study. Regression models have been developed based on the analysis of variance. The prime factors favoring the ultimate tensile strength and microhardness were 2100 rpm, 10 mm min−1, and threaded cylinder shape. The findings from the analysis of variance and grey relational analysis are in concurrence with each other. The results of fuzzy logic showcased a substantial improvement in terms of grey relational grade. The results from the artificial neural network deliver rational evidence for the analysis of variance conducted on the selected tool pin shapes.KEYWORDS: Dissimilar cast alloysFriction Stir WeldingGrey relation analysisFuzzy logicArtificial neural network Disclosure statementNo potential conflict of interest was reported by the author(s).","PeriodicalId":18266,"journal":{"name":"Materials and Manufacturing Processes","volume":"43 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135770076","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"材料科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The existing microtool fabrication techniques are complex and require an additional setup, which increases the cost. This study proposed a simple and cost-effective method called sheet electrical discharge grinding (sheet-EDG). A 500 μm diameter tungsten carbide rod was radially fed and later reciprocated along a 100-μm-thick brass sheet to fabricate high aspect ratio (AR) microtools without any noticeable taper. The effects of process parameters, such as optimal tool path, radial infeed positions, sheet thickness, sheet-EDG parameter, radial infeed per pass, radial infeed rate, and traverse feed rate were investigated and discussed. Further, two microtools with average diameter of 28 μm and 23 μm, having AR of more than 50 and 100, respectively, were fabricated. Finally, different shaped-microtools were fabricated based on modified tool paths. The results demonstrate that sheet-EDG technique can fabricate high AR microtools with different end shapes.KEYWORDS: Shaped-microtoolmicro-EDMsheet-EDGbrass sheettungsten carbidetool path Disclosure statementNo potential conflict of interest was reported by the author(s).","PeriodicalId":18266,"journal":{"name":"Materials and Manufacturing Processes","volume":"76 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136130523","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"材料科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We used a complex dairy starter named Ur to investigate population dynamics of <i>Lactococcus lactis</i>, <i>Lactococcus cremoris</i> and <i>Leuconostoc mesenteroides</i> strains in terms of constant-diversity and periodic selection models. <b>Methods:</b> To mimic the starter Ur, we designed blends of 24 strains representing all eight previously identified genetic lineages in the starter culture. The blends were propagated by daily transfers in milk for over 500 generations in the presence or absence of a cocktail of lytic bacteriophages. The relative abundance of genetic lineages of <i>L. lactis</i>, <i>L. cremoris</i> and <i>Lc. mesenteroides</i> strains present in the complex blend, as well as phage presence, were monitored. <b>Results:</b> Control blends without phage predation showed decreased strain diversity, leading to a stable state due to the domination of the fittest strain(s) of a particular lineage according to periodic selection dynamics. However, in phage-challenged blends, predation caused a large shift in the microbial composition by killing the fittest and sensitive strains. <b>Conclusion:</b> It was demonstrated that phage-challenged blends maintained their diversity at the level of genetic lineages, thus providing experimental support for the constant-diversity dynamics model in a complex microbial community.</p>","PeriodicalId":18266,"journal":{"name":"Materials and Manufacturing Processes","volume":"26 1","pages":"33"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC10688827/pdf/","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"81592621","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"材料科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
