In the paper, the optimization problem is tackled in terms of simulation-based design of the energy system for a typical year of operation. The methodology has been applied to a Campus in Trieste, Italy, involving locally available renewable energy sources, a centralized cogeneration system, and decentralized heat pumps. The nominal powers of cogeneration plant, photovoltaic modules and wind turbine have been optimized by a population-based evolutionary optimization algorithm, previously proposed by the authors. We have also found the optimal scheduling of energy generators by means of a greedy approach. The solution with maximum Annualized Cost Saving Percentage is discussed, highlighting how a configuration involving decentralized heat pumps is cost effective, integrates more renewable energy sources, and reduces environmental impact and grid exchange compared to a benchmark solution, with fully centralized generators.","PeriodicalId":182421,"journal":{"name":"SECOND INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON MATERIAL SCIENCE, SMART STRUCTURES AND APPLICATIONS: ICMSS-2019","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-12-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127031250","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

{"title":"Enzymatic fuel cell technology for energy production from bio-sources","authors":"L. Barelli, G. Bidini, Eleonora Calzoni, A. Cesaretti, A. Michele, Carla Emiliani, L. Gammaitoni, Elena Sisani","doi":"10.1063/1.5138747","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1063/1.5138747","url":null,"abstract":"Enzymatic biofuel cells (EFCs) are bioelectronic devices that use oxidoreductase enzymes as electrocatalysts for the oxidation of an organic substrate and/or the reduction of oxygen or peroxide, finalized to direct energy conversion to electricity. Enzymes provide excellent specificity towards the substrates, avoiding, in some cases, the need of membranes and noble metals, thus realizing very compact systems suitable for miniaturization. Other advantages include high catalytic activity with low overvoltage for substrate conversion, mild operating conditions, like ambient temperature and near-neutral pH and low cost. EFCs can be utilized in a variety of applications, which need low power input and the biocompatibility of the device, including implantable or wearable biofuel cells, self-powered biosensors and, generally, portable battery-free power solutions. For enzymatic biofuel cell design, an effective immobilization of enzymes on the electrodes is an important challenge to obtain direct electron transfer without mediators, resulting in higher performance and improved long term stability. The use of conductive nanomaterials and different types of polymers as electrodes allow to achieve high specific surface, increasing the number of wired enzymes per volume unit, and facilitate the electron transfer between enzyme active site and electrode. The present paper focuses on glucose fuel cells (GFCs), a subtype of conventional EFCs able to oxidize glucose provided by a lot of metabolic processes. The designs of bioanodes are focused on the use of glucose oxidase (GOx), while biocathodes are based on laccase. The realization of a preliminary prototype on lab scale is presented based on glucose oxidase immobilized on conductive polymer, which already exhibited stability over time (several months) once immobilized through innovative techniques. Since glucose is an essential, relatively abundant and almost unlimited source of energy in living organisms, possible applications are the development of implantable GFCs as well as the exploitation of agro-industrial wastes.","PeriodicalId":182421,"journal":{"name":"SECOND INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON MATERIAL SCIENCE, SMART STRUCTURES AND APPLICATIONS: ICMSS-2019","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-12-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127279804","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Despite of a series of benefits, such as low investment costs and large availability of the external source (ambient air), air-source heat pumps are affected by several drawbacks, the most important of which is the frosting phenomena. Nowadays, the most widespread defrosting technique is reverse-cycle defrost (RCD): the indoor heat exchanger of the AWHP operates as an evaporator, extracting thermal energy from the heated space to melt the ice layer. For this reason, during the defrosting process no heating is provided and the indoor air temperature may significantly drop; therefore, the thermal comfort of building occupants is negatively affected. Very few studies demonstrating that the correct design of the hydronic distribution loop can mitigate the adverse effect of defrosting cycles on indoor thermal comfort can be found in literature; hence, the aim of this paper is to optimize position and size of a thermal storage tank inserted within the hydronic loop in order to minimize the impact of defrosting cycles on the heating system performance. This work analyses the performance of an inverter-driven AWHP coupled to a residential building located in Bologna (Northern Italy) by means of a simulation model developed with TRNSYS; furthermore, the heat pump dynamic model takes into account the reverse cycle operating mode during defrosting cycles and the energy losses linked to on-off cycling. Results show that defrosting cycles have a negative, significant impact on the seasonal performance factor of the system, which is reduced up to 10% with respect to an ideal case where frosting phenomena is not considered. Furthermore, defrosting transients cause a relevant decrease of the indoor air temperature (about 1°C), linked to the worsening of indoor thermal comfort conditions, in systems characterized by low thermal inertia (water volume lower than 5 l/kW); on the contrary, the influence of defrosting cycles on indoor conditions can be considered as negligible for a water content in the distribution loop larger than 10 l/kW, especially if the thermal storage is placed on the supply loop (i.e. between the heat pump and the terminal units).Air-to-water heat pumps (AWHPs) are an efficient technology to provide thermal energy for space heating and domestic hot water production in residential buildings, which cover about 30% of the Italian overall energy consumption. The 3DCell, an approach continuously developed by the authors at Politecnico di Milano, is based on a pseudo-staggered leapfrog method that allows to decompose a generic 3D problem in a set of 1D scalar equation arbitrarily oriented in space. The system of equations has been solved referring to a relative rotating framework for the moving components, whereas to an absolute reference elsewhere. The domain has been discretized on a basis of a polar coordinate system, identifying five macro sub-domains, namely the inlet pipe, impeller, vaneless diffuser, volute, outlet pipe, each treated numerically in a specific way. The diffuser’s momentum in the tangential direction has been modelled resorting to the conservation of the angular momentum, while the rotor channels are modelled as rotating pipes that exchange work and momentum with the blades as they experience a relative source...","PeriodicalId":182421,"journal":{"name":"SECOND INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON MATERIAL SCIENCE, SMART STRUCTURES AND APPLICATIONS: ICMSS-2019","volume":"100 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-12-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121464328","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
