It is shown that alkaline activation of illite clay by sodium hydroxide leads to the slight structural changes mainly characterized by water link changes. Mērīta iegūto mālu paraugu īpatnējā virsma. Analizēta termiskās apstrādes ietekme uz mālu paraugu sorbcijas īpasībām. Veikta abu atradņu smilsu smalcināsana ūdens vidē, noteikts mineraloģiskais, granulometriskais sastāvs un morfoloģija pirms un pēc smilsu smalcināsanas. Analizēta un izvērtēta dažāda granulometriskā sastāva smilsu pucolānu reakcijas aktivitāte, nosakot to kā brīvā kalcija hidroksīda daudzumu sķīdumā. Analizēts cementa pastas hidratācijas process atkarībā no Skudras un Bāles atradņu kvarca smilsu dispersitātes un apstrādes laika. Compressive strength and apparent porosity were measured. The effect of the concentration of KOH and NaOH solutions on the material mechanical properties was investigated by means of infrared spectroscopy (IR). Changes recorded in the UV/VIS and IR spectra during accelerated aging experiments are analysed with respect to corresponding changes in a selection of chemical and physical properties of biodiesel, namely, induction period, viscosity and acid number. A novel approach for evaluating fluorescence spectral data is presented. It is determined that fluorescence spectroscopy provides excellent sensitivity for detecting changes in biodiesel properties during early aging. The most important variables of the transesterification reaction are as follows: quality of the oil, catalyst type, concentration of catalyst, molar ratio of alcohol to oil, temperature and reaction time. The literature studies show that there is not a generally accepted procedure for the characterisation of transesterification reactions results and catalyst formulation activity. Therefore, even the evaluation of the usability of the most utilised industrial catalysts (sodium hydroxide and potassium hydroxide) is inconsistent. The experimental investigations of the transesterification reactions of high quality rapeseed oil in the presence of the above mentioned catalysts by change of all the variables allow us to regard two different characteristics of each reaction (reaction yield and process yield) that has to be determined. The comparison of these two characteristics gives a new instrument for classification of catalyst formulations. In the case of high quality rapeseed oil, sodium hydroxide and potassium hydroxide have shown a similar activity.
