Oral beta-blockers are widely used to prevent and reduce the frequency of these attacks. However, the use of topical beta-blockers for acute treatment is still controversial. Aims: In this randomized double-armed study, we aim to compare the efficacy of timolol 0.5% eye drops compared with other over-the-counter (OTC) medications used for the acute treatment of migraine. Patients and methods: Fifty-seven patients were randomly allocated to group A (treatment group: timolol 0.5% eye drops) and group B (control group: OTC drugs including NSAIDs, caffeine, aspirin, and acetaminophen). The primary outcome was pain reduction. Secondary outcome measures included reducing nausea, vomiting, photophobia, and phonophobia. Results: Median pain reduction for the OTC group was higher than for timolol (6, 4 prospectively) with a significant U test (P < 0.001). We found a significant correlation between pain severity and degree of pain reduction (r 1⁄4 0.480, P < 0.001). Twenty-six (89.6%) patients in the control group compared with eight (28.6%) patients in the timolol group reported pain reduction by 5 or more. Both timolol and OTC were effective on headache associations: nausea, photophobia, and phonophobia. Conclusion: Both timolol and OTC are equally effective in acute migraine attacks. But OTC drugs are still preferred due to their superior abortion effect.","PeriodicalId":18173,"journal":{"name":"Mansoura Veterinary Medical Journal","volume":"101 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"81282572","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Destruction of melanocytes results in depigmented skin lesions. Pathogenesis is not fully understood and mostly is multifactorial. However, the autoimmune theory is the most widely accepted one. Interaction between genetic, environmental, biochemical, and immunologic factors contribute to the disease. Cytokines have an important role in the development of the disease and its progression. Aim : The aim of the study is to measure the blood levels of C-X-C motif chemokine ligand 10 (CXCL10) in vitiligo and to correlate it with disease activity and severity. Patients and methods : This is a case e control study that enrolled 60 vitiligo patients (30 had active vitiligo and 30 had stable vitiligo) and 30 healthy age-matched and sex-matched controls. Vitiligo extent score (VES) was calculated. CXCL10 was measured in venous blood samples using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Results : CXCL10 levels were signi fi cantly higher among vitiligo patients compared with controls ( P < 0.001). Also, CXCL10 levels in vitiligo patients were signi fi cantly higher in the active group compared with the stable group ( P < 0.001). There was statistically signi fi cant positive correlation between CXCL10 levels and VES score ( P ¼ 0.003). Median CXCL10 (pg/ml) in controls was 2.38 versus 8.13 in patients. Furthermore, in vitiligo patients, the median CXCL10 (pg/ml) was 9.5 in the active group versus 7.6 in the stable group. Conclusions : Serum levels of CXCL10 were signi fi cantly higher in vitiligo patients compared with healthy controls. Furthermore, patients with active vitiligo had higher levels of CXCL10 compared with the stable group. Moreover, patients with higher VES had higher CXCL10 serum levels.","PeriodicalId":18173,"journal":{"name":"Mansoura Veterinary Medical Journal","volume":"347 8 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"80224001","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
