The DFT/B3LYP/cc-pVTZ method was used to determine geometric parameters, electronic and vibrational characteristics of trans-isomers of azo-, azoxy-, azodioxy-benzene and azo-, azoxy-pyridine, which can act as precursors for synthesis of individual compounds or as components of supramolecular complexes with mesomorphic properties. It has been shown that azo-, azoxy-, and azodioxy bridging groups are electron accep-tors with respect to phenyl and pyridine fragments. The effect of the oxygen atom number in bridging group on the properties of molecules is estimated. The internal rotation potential functions U( φ ) and torsional vibration amplitudes of phenyl and pyridine fragments, leading to distortion of planar structure of molecules, are calculated. A correlation between the calculated function U( φ ) and the distribution diagram of the torsion angle φ (CCNN) in the –Ph–N=N–Ph– fragment among the conformations stabilized in crystals is shown. It is assumed that in the Ph–N=N–Ph molecules possessing a larger amplitude of phenyl (Ph) torsional vibrations than the molecules with azoxy- and azodioxy-groups, the appearance of short-range disorder in the crystal at a lower temperature can be expected. For the Ph1–N(O)–N–Ph2 compounds, the asymmetry of molecular core and different amplitudes of torsional vibrations of the phenyl fragments Ph1 and Ph2 could be the reason for the expansion of mesophase existence temperature range ∆Т . Thermotropic liquid crystals belong to an exciting class of self-organising materials, which are broadly utilised now, and, definitely will find advanced applications in future. The combination of fluidity and ordering together with specific electro-optical properties assures their extraordinary practical usefulness. How-ever, the molecular structure – mesomorphic property relationship is still far to be well-established and understood despite more than a hundred years of their existence and intensive study. The design, synthesis and investigation of new liquid crystalline materials with various molecular structure type (rod-like, bend-shaped, disc-like, etc.) and weight (low molar mass, macromolecular) still remain an actual and highlighted task. In this mini-review we discuss relatively broad sub-class of chiral calamitic liquid crystalline materials derived from the lactic acid and give some specific examples on effective tuning of their mesomorphic and electro-optical behaviour using various types of lateral substitution of molecular core. Fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodine atoms, as well as bulky methyl and methoxy groups are used as lateral substituents on the phenyl ring far from the chiral lactate group. The effects of both magnetic and electric fields on an orientation of the dendrimer were considered. An analysis of diffraction patterns was carried out with the use of paracrystal model of Hosemann. Structural simulation and diffraction calculations ≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡ some structural parameters during phase transformations were considered. It was determined that the dendrimer has fan-shaped conformation and forms two liquid crystal phases: SmI and N C . The dendrimer does not crystal-lize, but does vitrify with the structure of the previous SmI phase. It was established that the dendrimer can not be oriented either by magnetic field 1,2 T or electrostatic field 2 MV/m. The identification of LC phases and their structure parameters have been confirmed by diffraction calculations. The phase transitions of the dendrimer are G → 55–66 о С → SmI → 101 о С → N С → 274 о С → Iso. The SmI → N С phase transition is the phase transition of mixed order (the phase transition of both the first-order and the second-order). Based on the theory of diffraction by Kogelnik, an analysis of the effect of mechanical tension and compression of a phase reflective holographic grating across its thickness on the spectral characteristics of the grating is made. A comparative analysis of experimental data and simulation results is carried out. It is shown that when the hologram is mechanically compressed, the wavelength corresponding to the maximum in the reflection spectrum is shifted to the short-wavelength region of the spectrum, and when it is stretched – to the long-wavelength region. The wavelengths of the maximum in the reflection spectrum for the theoretical and experimental dependences corresponding to the same magnitude of compression or tension are proximate.
