The survey investigated trends in areas such as which technologies are currently being used, sample loads, sample sizes, automation, the use of solid-phase extraction (SPE) devices (cartridges, disks, plates, tips), SPE chemistries, selection criteria, and problems encountered. As a result, the comprehensive characterization essential to the development of cost-effective manufacturing processes and safe and efficacious cancer treatments is much more challenging using traditional analytical instruments and techniques. Fortunately, there are new solutions available that provide fast results, often with greater sensitivity and resolution, even for these novel, complex molecules. Especially when combined with mass spectrometry detection, GC×GC provides high resolution, high sensitivity, and massive chromatographic data sets, which is useful in diverse fields such as petroleum analysis, metabolomics, food, flavor, fragrance, and environmental analysis. In this installment, recent developments in GC×GC that make it more amenable for routine use are discussed. These include advances in instrumentation, especially modulation, column sets, data analysis, and the range and types of samples amenable to GC×GC. The sampling was conducted with the FM4 sampling module, which features particulate collection followed by polyurethane foam sorption followed by activated carbon disc adsorption, a configuration designed to capture PFAS-laden particulate matter (one-micron to ten-microns), as well as aerosol, volatile, and ionic PFAS species in a single sampling event. Individual sampling media fractions were subsequently analyzed by gas chromatography coupled with tandem quadrupole mass spectrometry (GC–MS/MS) and liquid chromatography coupled with tandem quadrupole mass spectrometry (LC–MS/MS) for 33 ionic and 20 neutral PFAS species. A multi-day field sampling event conducted in an outdoor urban environment demonstrated that the system was able to capture and differentiate a number of airborne PFAS species. Only a limited number of phytotoxins have been detected and reported in terrestrial and aquatic environments, partially due to analytical challenges. In this article, a robust, reliable, and efficient approach, namely Source Supported Suspect Screening (4S), is introduced for high-throughput analysis of phytotoxins from their plant origin to the downstream environmental compartments.
