Colonoscopy videos contain a significant number of frames which do not carry any clinical information. The presence of such frames would slow down or cause the failure of the processing steps of such an automated system. Furthermore, many existing metrics to measure the quality of the colonoscopy procedures directly involve the number of such indistinct frames present in the videos. We propose a novel algorithm to detect indistinct frames based on the wavelet analysis. The L2 norm of the detail coefficients of the wavelet decomposition of a colonoscopy image is considered as the feature vector of the proposed classification system. The algorithm was tested on a manually labeled, balanced data set. It achieved an accuracy of 99.59% in a leave-two-out cross validation procedure based on Bayesian classification. Furthermore, when applied to full colonoscopy videos, the presented algorithm detected 26.2% of the frames as indistinct, of which 92.3% were correctly classified. The proposed method outperforms the current best performing algorithm both in terms of accuracy and computation time.","PeriodicalId":179564,"journal":{"name":"2009 13th International Machine Vision and Image Processing Conference","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-09-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134432303","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The proposed approach takes a Poisson MAP-MRF classification as an initial stage to detect objects. These are then used to update the multiple target locations generated by 3D Poisson Kalman Particle filters (PKPF). A probabilistic nearest neighbour search strategy for object association is developed to produce improved prediction of target locations. Our approach is tested in real 3D confocal image sequences with challenging illumination conditions. Results show that our Poisson Kalman particle filter approach obtains very promising results and outperforms three other tracking approaches.","PeriodicalId":179564,"journal":{"name":"2009 13th International Machine Vision and Image Processing Conference","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-09-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125469406","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Surplus amounts of such fluid can impair breathing by limiting the expansion of the lungs during inhalation. Measuring the fluid volume is indicative of the effectiveness of any treatment but, due to the similarity to surround regions, fragments of collapsed lung present and topological changes; accurate quantification of the effusion volume is a difficult imaging problem. A novel slice-by-slice code is presented which performs conditional region growth to accurately segment the effusion shape. We demonstrate the applicability of our technique in the segmentation of pleural effusion and pulmonary masses.","PeriodicalId":179564,"journal":{"name":"2009 13th International Machine Vision and Image Processing Conference","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-09-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114018240","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One solution to improve efficiency is the use of a hexagonal image representation and we present an approach to feature extraction on hexagonal images using an edge map pyramid approach that further reduces the computational cost. The efficient performance of this approach is demonstrated by comparing run-times for obtaining edge maps by applying multi-scale operators directly to hexagonal images with the edge map pyramid approach.","PeriodicalId":179564,"journal":{"name":"2009 13th International Machine Vision and Image Processing Conference","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-09-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134292490","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Diverse styles of brush strokes have previously been adopted for different areas of an image to create textures and shading. Because there is no continuous tone within these types of images, we propose a multi-level scheme, which uses different textures based on a threshold level. These textures are then applied to the different levels and are then combined to build up the final image. We propose a technique by which one can hide a secret using visual cryptography (VC) within the hatched images. Visual cryptography provides a very powerful means by which one secret can be distributed into two or more pieces known as shares. When the shares are superimposed exactly together, the original secret can be discovered without computer participation.","PeriodicalId":179564,"journal":{"name":"2009 13th International Machine Vision and Image Processing Conference","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-09-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124661133","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper describes a fully automatic single-view algorithm for distinguishing between young fir trees having correctly developed top shoots and trunks, and trees having either multiple or missing top shoots. This is accomplished by an approach combining a Euclidian distance transform with a dynamic programming algorithm for finding optimal paths following the trunk. The classification performance of the method was investigated using a SVM and 10-fold stratified cross validation, resulting in a correct classification rate of 90.2% (101/112) when discriminating between trees having one top shoot and trees having multiple top shoots. Future work aims to improve the classification performance of the algorithm by incorporating color information into the data considered by the dynamic programming algorithm.","PeriodicalId":179564,"journal":{"name":"2009 13th International Machine Vision and Image Processing Conference","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-09-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125850667","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Progress in feature matching allows to establish robust correspondences between images for a sparse set of points. Recent works have attempted to use this sparse information to guide the dense motion field estimation. We propose to achieve this in an extended motion estimation framework, which integrates information about the geodesic distance to the sparse features. Results show that by considering a handful of these feature matches, the geodesic distance is able to propagate the information efficiently.","PeriodicalId":179564,"journal":{"name":"2009 13th International Machine Vision and Image Processing Conference","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-09-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117154315","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Confocal images are of very high quality that makes it possible to extract high-precision quantitative information from them. However the accuracy of the data is limited due to possible experimental errors. In this study we propose an algorithm for estimation and correction of errors in the data caused by diffractive scattering of confocal images. The method is based on the Richardson-Lucy (RL) deconvolution algorithm. The RL algorithm is modified to provide the higher accuracy of data read off from blurred images of objects with sharp edges. We have used the dataset on segmentation gene expression in {it Drosophila} embryo as a test case.","PeriodicalId":179564,"journal":{"name":"2009 13th International Machine Vision and Image Processing Conference","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-09-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131047727","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The watermarking scheme is based on the design of a color visual model that is the modification of a perceptual model used in the image coding of gray scale images. The model is designed to estimate and utilize the noise detection threshold of each wavelet coefficient in luminance and chrominance components in order to satisfy the transparency and robustness required by color image watermarking techniques. Besides the visual masking given by taking into account the luminance content and the texture, the crossed masking effect and the effect given by the variance within the local region of the target coefficient are investigated such that the estimated noise detection threshold is more close to the real noise detection threshold. In a locally adaptive fashion based on the wavelet decomposition, the thresholds of subband coefficients in each color component are derived to construct a perceptually lossless quantization matrix for embedding watermarks. Performance in terms of robustness and transparency is obtained by embedding the maximum strength watermark while maintaining the perceptually lossless quality of the watermarked color image. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme is more robust than the existing schemes while retaining the watermark transparency.","PeriodicalId":179564,"journal":{"name":"2009 13th International Machine Vision and Image Processing Conference","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-09-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122967004","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper introduces a new blind watermarking technique to address the vulnerabilities of a palmprint recognition system against replay attacks. In particular, we focus on protecting the system against changing or submitting a fake palmprint image at the enrollment and/or recognition stage while still not affecting the recognition performance. To achieve this, the watermark is embedded into the palm's region of intersect which inherently makes it robust to common attacks. The origin of the palmprint images is proven by checking the presence of the watermark in the watermarked palmprint image by comparing the Maximum Likelihood (ML) ratio of a given binary hypotheses to a determined threshold based on the statistical model of the watermarked coefficients. The results obtained have shown that using watermarking concept can efficiently protect a palmprint recognition system against replay attacks.","PeriodicalId":179564,"journal":{"name":"2009 13th International Machine Vision and Image Processing Conference","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-09-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133277922","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
