While recognition of valid sign sequences is an important task in the overall goal of machine recognition of sign language, recognition of movement epenthesis is an important step towards continuous recognition of natural sign language. We propose a framework for recognizing valid sign segments and identifying movement epenthesis. Experiments show our proposed system performs well when classifying eight different signs and identifying 100 different types of movement epenthesis. A ROC analysis of the systems classifications performance showed an area under the curve measurement of 0.949.","PeriodicalId":179564,"journal":{"name":"2009 13th International Machine Vision and Image Processing Conference","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-09-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114803242","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The importance of the iris as a unique identifier is predicated on the assumption that the iris is stable throughout a person’s life. This does not take into account the fact that the iris changes in response to a number of external factors including medication, disease, surgery and age and is part of a dynamic optical system that alters with light levels and focussing distance. What is required is a means of identifying the features in the iris which do not alter over time from those that change in response to external factors. Iris segmentation issues and the effects of pupil dilation in identification are examined in this study using existing iris recognition algorithms and a series of images captured from three subjects. A technique that enhances segmentation is presented and discussed.","PeriodicalId":179564,"journal":{"name":"2009 13th International Machine Vision and Image Processing Conference","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-09-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126273660","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We demonstrate the extraction of information associated with gait, especially the stride rate, from radar data. We describe algorithms used for detection, the radar sensors used for the measurements, and detail some of the features that can be extracted. We make measurements of human subjects in outdoor clutter backgrounds for identification. These features can serve as identifying information in a scene with multiple subjects. We gather ground truth using video and accelerometers to validate the radar data.","PeriodicalId":179564,"journal":{"name":"2009 13th International Machine Vision and Image Processing Conference","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-09-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132849393","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The current clinical practice involves the application of a tedious and time consuming manual tracking procedure on large amount of data. As a result, automatic tracking systems are currently developed and evaluated. However, problems caused by cellular division, agglomeration, Brownian motion and topology changes are difficult issues that have to be accommodated by automatic tracking techniques. In this paper, we detail the development of a fully automated multi-target tracking system that is able to deal with Brownian motion and cellular division. During the tracking process our approach includes the neighbourhood relationship and motion history to enforce the cellular tracking continuity in the spatial and temporal domain. The experimental results reported in this paper indicate that our method is able to accurately track cellular structures in time-lapse data.","PeriodicalId":179564,"journal":{"name":"2009 13th International Machine Vision and Image Processing Conference","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-09-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124667414","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One lesion feature indicative of malignancy is border irregularity. In this paper the theoretical fundamentals of a harmonic-wavelet based methodology for skin lesion border evaluation are described. Our methodology is applied to the boundaries of 30 cutaneous lesions and classification algorithms are consequently utilised to evaluate the effectiveness of descriptors for differentiating between regular / irregular borders and between benign / malignant tumours. Results indicate that generated parameters have high discriminative value when differentiating between benign and malignant lesions: maximum classification accuracy achieved was 93.3%, with 80% sensitivity.","PeriodicalId":179564,"journal":{"name":"2009 13th International Machine Vision and Image Processing Conference","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-09-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125060252","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Human gait properties can be affected by various contexts such as different clothing and carrying objects. Most of the literature shows that these clothing and carrying objects (i.e. covariate factors) give difficulties for gait recognition. In this paper, we propose a novel method that generates dynamic and static feature templates of the sequences of silhouette images called Dynamic Static Silhouette Templates (DSSTs) to overcome this issue. Here the DSST is calculated from Gait Energy Images (GEIs). DSSTs capture the dynamic and static characteristics of gait. The experimental results show that our method overcomes the issues arising from differing clothing and the carrying of objects.","PeriodicalId":179564,"journal":{"name":"2009 13th International Machine Vision and Image Processing Conference","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-09-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134357567","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It allows the automatic creation of large series (≫ 1000) of digitally imaged ultra-thin sections (≪ 100 nm) from heavy metal-stained and plastic embedded tissue. Together with the ability of selectively staining individual, identified neurons using electron dense material one can visually track the complete structure at a resolution as low as 20x20x40 nm. Here we introduce a simple fuzzy region-growing tracing algorithm that incorporates a minimum of prior knowledge about object and background gray level distributions. We show that this algorithm reliably traces structures of interest over several hundreds of sections opening the unique opportunity to systematically study the morphology of neuronal structures at the nanometre scale in a fully automated way.","PeriodicalId":179564,"journal":{"name":"2009 13th International Machine Vision and Image Processing Conference","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-09-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126667219","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Pintavirooj and Sangworasil exploit this idea and present a system that records sequentially images from multiple view points to reconstruct a 3D shape of a static object of interest [1]. For instance, using a 60 angle of view on the image, they manage to get its accurate 3D reconstruction [1]. Unfortunately, when considering application such as video surveillance, it is not reasonable to expect that 60 cameras will give simultaneous images of a person of interest. However, we can expect that the person will move over time and show sequentially different poses of her/his head to at least one or a few cameras. This article proposes a technique for recovering an accurate 3D shape by combining views recorded at different times.","PeriodicalId":179564,"journal":{"name":"2009 13th International Machine Vision and Image Processing Conference","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-09-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131424809","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Recently, however, some local methods such as those based on segmentation or adaptive weights are suggested to possibly achieve more accuracy than global ones in retrieving disparity information. The problem for these newly suggested local methods is that they cannot be easily adopted since they may require more computational costs which increase in proportion to the window size they use. To reduce the computational costs, therefore, we propose in this paper the stereo matching method that use domain weight and range weight similar to those in the bilateral filter. Our proposed method shows constant time O(1) for the stereo matching. Our experiments spend constant time for computation regardless of the window size but our experimental results show that the accuracy of generated depth map is as good as the ones suggested by recent methods.","PeriodicalId":179564,"journal":{"name":"2009 13th International Machine Vision and Image Processing Conference","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-09-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116049783","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Currently in research there are two techniques for describing the dynamics of facial expression; quantitative and temporal based analysis. Quantitative-based techniques attempt to determine the amplitude of the expression in terms of intensity levels, where the levels correspond to some measure of the extent to which the expression is present on the face. Temporal-based techniques split the expression into three temporal phases (onset-apex-offset). In this paper we focus on the temporal aspects of facial expression formation, describing our research into applying a non-linear manifold extraction technique for modelling these temporal phases. We present initial results of our technique for modelling the temporal aspects of both posed and spontaneous facial expressions.","PeriodicalId":179564,"journal":{"name":"2009 13th International Machine Vision and Image Processing Conference","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-09-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134216308","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
