Online handwritten numeral recognition system is developed using x, y coordinates as the feature and Hidden Markov Model (HMM) as the modelling technique. Offline handwritten numeral recognition system is developed using vertical projection profile and horizontal projection profile (VPP-HPP), zonal discrete cosine transform (DCT), chain code histogram (CCH) and pixel level information as features and vector quantization (VQ) as the modelling technique. The confusion patterns of online and offline systems are analysed. Based on this, the two systems are further combined to obtain a final numeral recognition system. The combined system exhibits improved performance over the individual approaches, demonstrating the significance of different natures of information present in each mode.","PeriodicalId":178278,"journal":{"name":"2012 National Conference on Communications (NCC)","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-04-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127907623","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Localization is an important functionality in any sensor network. Due to properties of the acoustic medium, terrestrial localization algorithms are not directly applicable to underwater networks. In this paper, the authors propose a modified version of Stochastic Proximity Embedding localization algorithm proposed before for terrestrial localization customized for underwater application. The algorithm was found to provide good performance in underwater scenario as it can make use of ranges between all nodes with unknown locations. Detailed study of the algorithm performance has been done and the results are reported.","PeriodicalId":178278,"journal":{"name":"2012 National Conference on Communications (NCC)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-04-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128824659","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The vocal tract is modelled as a concatenation of equal length sections and the ratios of the areas at section interfaces are calculated and these are scaled using the area of a reference section. The lip opening area as estimated from a video recording of the speaker's face can be used as a reference area for obtaining the vocal tract shape during speech utterances with transitional tract configuration. A technique for estimating the area of the lip opening based on template matching is investigated. It satisfactorily tracked the horizontal and vertical opening of the lips in the video images of speakers with different skin hues, recorded under good lighting conditions.","PeriodicalId":178278,"journal":{"name":"2012 National Conference on Communications (NCC)","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-04-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126417413","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The reported antenna gives a bandwidth from 700 to 3600 MHz with broadside radiation pattern. In this paper, a broadband behavior of the reported shorted plate folded microstrip antenna is studied. The resonance curve plots and the surface current distributions over wide frequency range have been analyzed. It is observed that the folded configuration and L-shaped slot modifies the various higher mode resonance frequencies of the shorted patch and the broadband response is realized due to the coupling between the individual frequencies. The resonance frequency equation for the various resonant modes of shorted plate rectangular patch is also proposed. The frequencies calculated using them agree closely with the simulated frequencies.","PeriodicalId":178278,"journal":{"name":"2012 National Conference on Communications (NCC)","volume":"55 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-04-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121311009","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the context of Indian languages, systematic analysis of various speech features and classification models in view of automatic language identification has not performed, because of the lack of proper speech corpus covering majority of the Indian languages. With this motivation, we have initiated the task of developing multilingual speech corpus in Indian languages. In this paper spectral features are explored for investigating the presence of language specific information. Melfrequency cepstral coefficients (MFCCs) and linear predictive cepstral coefficients (LPCCs) are used for representing the spectral information. Gaussian mixture models (GMMs) are developed to capture the language specific information present in spectral features. The performance of language identification system is analyzed in view of speaker dependent and independent cases. The recognition performance is observed to be 96% and 45% respectively, for speaker dependent and independent environments.","PeriodicalId":178278,"journal":{"name":"2012 National Conference on Communications (NCC)","volume":"291 8","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-04-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114041250","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The requirement of labeled speech corpora makes it less appealing to build LID system. An alternative scalable approach is to build LID system that does not require annotated speech database. In this paper, we have compared two such LID systems namely Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM) tokeniser and syllable based LID system. The phonotactics of GMM and syllable based system are captured by GMM cluster indices and syllable tokens respectively. We propose the use of universal syllable models in building the LID systems and then deriving the uni-gram syllable statistics from this model. Experimental results on the OGI 1992 multilingual speech corpus show that syllable based LID system performs significantly better than the GMM Tokeniser system.","PeriodicalId":178278,"journal":{"name":"2012 National Conference on Communications (NCC)","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-04-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125307410","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The watershed method is a powerful tool for medical image segmentation, but it produces over-segmented results due to presence of noise and non-linearity. The solutions available in literature have failed to give satisfactory results in case of gel images. This paper presents a novel method for segmentation of 2DE gel images. The pitfalls of the watershed transform have been addressed through spot characterization in the wavelet domain. The wavelet transform is an important multi-scale analysis tool for the images. The proposed method utilizes the best features of both the watershed and the wavelet transforms in which connected maxima set corresponding to each watershed region has been introduced and computed in the wavelet domain. This allows us for accurate detection of the spots in each watershed region. Experimental results on the set of real gel images demonstrate that our method outperforms the commercialized software. Our method has also an advantage of single threshold parameter selection.","PeriodicalId":178278,"journal":{"name":"2012 National Conference on Communications (NCC)","volume":"407 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-04-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133645258","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A novel channel-dependent Reverse Channel Training (RCT) sequence is proposed, using which the transmitter estimates the beamforming vectors for forward link data transmission. This training sequence is designed based on the following two metrics: (i) a capacity lower bound, and (ii) the mean square error in the estimate. The performance of the proposed training scheme is analyzed and is shown to significantly outperform the conventional orthogonal RCT sequence. Also, in the case where the transmitter uses water-filling power allocation for data transmission, a novel RCT sequence is proposed and optimized with respect to the MSE in estimating the transmit covariance matrix.","PeriodicalId":178278,"journal":{"name":"2012 National Conference on Communications (NCC)","volume":"101 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-04-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133825502","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A cross layer aware transmission queue adaptation system of a fixed computing system having multiple physical interfaces is presented here. The proposed system determines the condition of communication channel/network associated with the multiple physical interfaces while transmitting and receiving the data simultaneously through the interfaces. The core functional blocks of the proposed cross layer system modifies the transmission queue length of the active physical interfaces based on their dynamic network condition, and available bandwidth. It does not require any feedback mechanism, as well as intervention of any router or any proxy node. The experimental results show the enhancement in throughput and hence the QoS by using the proposed transmission queue adaptation mechanism using multiple interfaces. A future scope of the present work in detail is also presented here.","PeriodicalId":178278,"journal":{"name":"2012 National Conference on Communications (NCC)","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-04-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124946322","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
