The aim was to show that such a system needs not to be expensive and has high performance as well under all working conditions occuring in a car even if the microphone is placed at great distances from the driver. Such a system may be of interest not only for special applications (aids for handicapped people) but may also help the driver to concentrate on the essential tasks of driving. Instead of operating on complex keyboards (radios, trip-computers, navigation systems) the driver can use simply spoken commands to control various functions in the car. His eyes and hands will be free and his reactions will not be diminished.","PeriodicalId":178210,"journal":{"name":"34th IEEE Vehicular Technology Conference","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1984-05-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114374362","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The mobile radio network link is modeled as consisting of separate and independent message channel and acknowledgement channel. Probability of block error for slow Rayleigh fading is derived for FH/FSK scheme in the presence of partial-band noise interference. The modified expression for the channel throughput is derived for the CSMA-CD protocol in the context of ground mobile radio channel employing FH/FSK Spread Spectrum Communication. The throughput performance of CSMA-CD and its dependence on such key system parameters as the offered channel traffic, Collision recovery time, channel capacity, packet transmission time, and signal-to-noise power ratio are provided.","PeriodicalId":178210,"journal":{"name":"34th IEEE Vehicular Technology Conference","volume":"64 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1984-05-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126570258","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It yields a higher degree of reliability and flexibility by designing system structure, control and expansion on the assumptions that even if any subsystem fails, the other subsystems will continue working without shutting down. A subway transit system based on this concept has been realized. The functions of power supply control, train traffic control, train maintenance and dispatching are decentralized so as to prevent local trouble from affecting the whole system and to maintain transportation service. The autonomous decentralized concept has actually been applied as follows. Station control systems connected to an autonomous decentralized loop network system (ADL), are autonomous subsystems equivalent with others, having timetable information for each station. They can regulate train traffic based on only local information about how trains have been delayed or will be delayed.","PeriodicalId":178210,"journal":{"name":"34th IEEE Vehicular Technology Conference","volume":"113 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1984-05-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133020397","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As first described in 1956 these comprised a simple open-braided coax or a twin-lead connected to one or more standard VHF base stations: nowadays they incorporate remarkably simple and inexpensive line-powered signal boosters or 'repeaters' to compensate for line losses as they occur and can provide virtually unlimited range without dependence on linking land-lines. For use in coal mines the entire system can be made intrinsically safe, since the power drawn by a typical present-day signal booster need be only a few milliwatts of DC.","PeriodicalId":178210,"journal":{"name":"34th IEEE Vehicular Technology Conference","volume":"74 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1984-05-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134641448","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This propagation is enhanced by different mechanisms associated with the geology, and with the existence of metallic conductors in the entryways. In stratified geologies, a transverse electromagnetic (TEM) mode of signal propagation is possible if a low conducting layer is bounded above and below by higher conducting layers. In general, the difference in conductivities must be at least several orders of magnitude. Such geological waveguide conditions often exist in underground mines. Propagation via the waveguide effect is known as the \"seam mode\" of propagation. Another mode of propagation, the \"tunnel mode,\" exists in underground entries with electrical conductors such as power cables, metal pipes, and phone lines. A monofilar mode of propagation exists when signals are impressed upon conductors and return via the surrounding rock. A bifilar mode of propagation exists when all signals exist only on local conductors. In a given location there is a combination of monofilar and bifilar modes that make possible an interaction between the conductors and a transmitting device in a tunnel or entryway. Signals can be impressed on or received from local conductors via magnetic dipole antennas (loops) or line couplers.","PeriodicalId":178210,"journal":{"name":"34th IEEE Vehicular Technology Conference","volume":"37 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1984-05-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123848958","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A portable transmitter is normally required to radiate in the hands or on the belt of the user when the operator depresses the Push-To-Talk (PTT) switch. The radiation environment, the objects in the immediate vicinity of the radiator (say less than six inches distant) and the position of the radio with respect to such objects, is predictable. For example, the designer can expect that the radio case will be in the hand of the user, the antenna in front of the face of such person, and that there are a few feet of free space around the head of the user. The user of the radio can be expected to operate the transmitter in such conditions. This is not the case for a portable data terminal whose RF transmissions are controlled not by an operator but by interrogation by a base station. In these conditions, the terminal is required to radiate from inside a briefcase, on a table, on a metal slab, etc. In general, one can see that the terminal is expected to radiate from any position in the close vicinity of conducting or non-conducting surfaces. Traditional portable antennas, e.g., whips and helices, cannot satisfy the condition of radiating efficiently when placed close to and parallel to conducting surfaces.","PeriodicalId":178210,"journal":{"name":"34th IEEE Vehicular Technology Conference","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1984-05-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121991435","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The new system utilizes Leaky Coaxial Cable, a wired-wireless technique which offers many services such as train operation dispatching, passenger dispatching, public telephone, train status monitoring and so on. Taking advantage of sufficient receiving level from LCX, the system was designed to have 40 dB signal to noise ratio at more than 99 percent areas for voice communication channels and less than 10-4bit error rate at almost all areas for 1200 bit/s FSK data communication channel. Measurement after construction of the railway lines has verified that the intended quality is attained for both voice and data communication. Block error rate for triple transmission of same data also proved to be less than 10-3in the measurement. In this system, stable receiving level for relatively small power and efficient use of frequency resources are realized through isolat ion between zones and narrow dynamic range of LCX.","PeriodicalId":178210,"journal":{"name":"34th IEEE Vehicular Technology Conference","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1984-05-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127767471","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

ACSB can even be a viable competitor to cellular, with larger \"cells\" at lower costs, competing in urban areas, and providing service in less populated areas that may not have 800 MHz cellular capability for many years. To maximize spectrum utilization, several ACSB channels can replace an existing FM channel, and can also occupy the space between FM channels. To accomplish this, however, the design of the systems is critical. Coverage, co-channel and adjacent-channel interference between ACSB channels and to neighboring NBFM channels, and other factors must all be considered. The theories used in this system design are explained, and then applied to several developmental trunked systems that have been proposed. The results of the design are presented.","PeriodicalId":178210,"journal":{"name":"34th IEEE Vehicular Technology Conference","volume":"47 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1984-05-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115428028","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, a novel approach named \"tone calibrated technique\" which mitigates multipath fading induced distortions in a digital link is presented. It is shown that a low power pilot tone can be used to continuously calibrate a mobile link against time varying impairments. Coherent demodulation of data is possible by means of the pilot tone without using a conventional tracking loop. Since very little power is consumed by the pilot tone, the performance of the tone calibrated technique is only marginally below BPSK in an unfaded environment.","PeriodicalId":178210,"journal":{"name":"34th IEEE Vehicular Technology Conference","volume":"94 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1984-05-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130031119","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
