An FPGA-based look-up table, fed by a digitized envelope power signal, controls the envelope modulation performed by an RF vector modulator. The advantages of this predistortion architecture over conventional baseband digital approaches are a wider bandwidth, and the elimination of the need for digital baseband I/Q streams. The predistortion system was implemented as a testbed. Using 3-carrier CDMA2000 and multi-tone signals, the linearization performances for a 0.5 W GaAs HFET and a 90 W peak envelope power (PEP) LDMOS power amplifier were examined on the testbed. In the third-order intermodulation distortion (IMD) region, the wideband multi-tone testing showed IMD suppressions of 9 to 13 dB over 63 MHz bandwidth and a range of 7 to 8 dB backoff. For the 90 W power amplifier, the system achieved adjacent channel power ratio (ACPR) improvement of 13 dB output power backoff.","PeriodicalId":177645,"journal":{"name":"Radio and Wireless Conference, 2003. In this paper, a new interference suppression receiver for demodulation of BPSK DS/CDMA signals received by a base station antenna array is presented. The proposed receiver, which is suitable for multipath channels, combines a spatial generalized sidelobe canceller (GSC) algorithm with a temporal GSC filter bank. Besides its simplicity, one major advantage of the new structure is the fact that it incorporates conventional algorithms, which have been suggested for use in adaptive spatial beamforming and implements them in temporal filtering. The performance of the proposed receiver is studied in terms of signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR), bit error rate (BER) and achievable capacity of a given CDMA cell.","PeriodicalId":177645,"journal":{"name":"Radio and Wireless Conference, 2003. It is clear that the world of wireless communication systems and radar sensors will be heterogeneous in the future. Therefore, it arises the need for hardware solutions, which can handle several standards and related software implementations. Sampling architectures which sample the RF signal close to the antenna can provide a very flexible approach. Using a bandpass limited subsampling approach it is possible to investigate the basic feasibility of a /spl infin//spl phi/ modulator approach at a carrier frequency of 24 GHz. The alternative six-port concept relies on an increased number of scalar measurements of the received signal and is basically suited for broadband applications. The signal is fed into power dividers, super-posed with a reference signal and the amplitude is measured at a minimum of 3 ports. Flexible signal generation will gain importance if different communication standards have to be supported. The model has a quadrature structure, with a memoryless nonlinearity and a filter in each branch. The structure can describe AM/AM as well as AM/PM conversions. The parameters of the nonlinearity and the filter are jointly optimized to fit the measurements. Analytic expressions for the parameters of the model are found by means of the MMSE optimization. These wideband antennas are devised from fractal antenna technology. The self-similar structure has two key electrical attributes. First, it acts as loading components, which can be used to shrink the antenna size and produce a very broadband LC equivalent circuit, with relatively unchanging SWR for the overall structure. Second, the self-similarity yields individual structures of resonance over a variety of scales, which can be exploited in a prescriptive way to produce the same radiation characteristics over a very broad band. The two physical phenomena can be used to make practical wideband antennas which fall into two general classes: (1) impedance invariant wideband antennas (IIWA); and (2) frequency invariant wideband antennas (FIWA). The practical advantage of such classes of antennae is the new and enabling ability they convey to new telecom (and related) approaches. Trends towards software defined radio (SDR) now place the onus on the antenna designer to come up with a single 'one size fits all', in which the IIWA is a compelling solution. In the case of UWB and other regimes, a single antenna with frequency invariant characteristics is the key, and possible with the FIWA. By maximizing the decision region of the constellation, the optimal design rule is presented. For the optimal 2-circular 16QAM constellation with maximal minimum decision region /spl Pi//2, a simple method is also proposed to compute the soft information for the received signal. When the turbo code is used in the LAS/CDMA system, the BER performance is evaluated over AWGN channel to prove the optimality of the proposed 2-circular 16QAM constellation and to compare the proposed method with the other approximate method, which is used to compute log-likelihood ratio (LLR) information. The simulation results indicate that the proposed method is 0.75 dB and 0.1 dB better at BER 1e-3 and 1e-5 respectively for the optimal constellation. When the computational complexity is estimated by the number of the multiplication and addition operations, the proposed soft decision method is much simpler.","PeriodicalId":177645,"journal":{"name":"Radio and Wireless Conference, 2003. Yet, there is widespread perception that the spectrum that has been assigned by the FCC for the various commercial and military applications is not being efficiently utilized. As a result there is several efforts underway that are dealing with the sensing of unused spectrum at a given time, and utilizing it for voice and/or data communications. In this paper, we consider spectrum opportunistic systems where the currently assigned spectrum is monitored in real time for idle bands and propose a new method to use any unutilized spectral opportunities, thereby enhancing the spectrum reuse efficiency. The 2.4 GHz ferroelectric phase shifter is the key component for a two-element beam forming network (BFN). The smart antenna system is controlled by software that automatically adjusts the beam pattern to null interference, and maximize the signal power.
