This paper describes a dc-to-dc converter that can deliver 2.5 kilowatts output power with an efficiency greater than 80 percent using a pair of S7310M's connected in the push-push configuration. The magnetic portion of the circuit consists of an input charging choke and an output transformer whose windings are connected such that the induced voltages are additive to provide a high charging voltage to the capacitors in the LC resonant circuits. The system utilizes a conventional 60 Hz static switching bypass type 60 Hz UPS connected to a common battery with a switching type redundant 400 Hz solid state UPS thus eliminating the double conversion losses and lower efficiency of an added rotary frequency converter. A method is provided for continuity of operation with failure of any major circuit components and means are provided for isolation and maintenance of any component without interrupting the load. By the very nature of the reliability and long service life requirements, technological change and the introduction of new battery types is a slow process. Apart from certain emergency power systems that require particularly high discharge rates or are exposed to extremes of temperature, the market is almost wholly satisfied by lead-acid batteries of varying design. In reviewing their use, the regional preference for various battery designs is very apparent, with Britain favouring Plante cells for almost all applications, the United States preferring flat plate or more recently the Bell cell, and parts of Europe opting for tubular designs. Proper electrical isolation between computer loads is becoming more important in total center design. This paper is a discussion of the electrical characteristics of a total computer power distribution system. Current harmonics generated by newer power supplies cannot be properly handled by traditional power distribution design techniques. Proper transformer selection. wire sizing and grounding is presented to show how to achieve optimum system isolation. Comparative results of common mode noise attenuation for different type transformers are presented. The possible time-sharing circuit configurations of some thyristorized step-up and-down switching converters relating to new magnetic-power semiconductor combination systems and their unique features are firstly described from a practical point of view and discussed on the basis of power transistor type switching dc-dc convertor. The general procedures of circuit analysis using analytical method and performance evaluations to clarify the operating characteristics and to offer some desirable design data are presented generally. The steady-state open-loop control strategy are elucidated on the basis of the theoretical and experimental results. Unique design features include a transparent jar that is self-extinguishing, a permanent thermal fusion jar-cover seal, a post seal that effectively stops acid creepage, the option of either lead antimony or lead calcium grids and the ability to handle both short and long duration service or a combination thereof. The introduction of the new cell had to be integrated with the start-up of a new manufacturing plant. This meant that design requirements had to be defined to the extent that production machinery could be ordered 24 months in advance of prototype production. The cell also had to be compatible with three different markets -- utility switchgear, uninterruptible power system and telecommunications -- and be flexible enough to meet future individual requirements of particular customers within each market segment.
