On the Arabian Sea coast of southwestern India, for instance, they often fish in foul weather, and risk accidents during the monsoon season marked by high wind and waves. To make forecasts more easily accessible, we tested and deployed a low-cost, web-based, knowledge co-production system called Radio Monsoon. The website offers wind speed and wave height forecasts in graphics and local-language text with multiple interfaces - social media, WhatsApp, and a free phone service using voice over internet protocol. Focus groups and conversations connect the fishers with forecasters in a feedback loop. This paper examines how Radio Monsoon addresses challenges in knowledge co-production by looking at its technology deployment and societal impact.","PeriodicalId":176951,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 3rd ACM SIGCAS Conference on Computing and Sustainable Societies","volume":"107 3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-06-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124161133","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Historically, greater agency over the distribution of working hours has encouraged women's participation in paid employment. I study the work practices of a digital social enterprise in Bangalore that is both an employment provider and a third-party employment facilitator for women returnees, to understand how the notion of \"working time\" is incorporated in the design of initiatives by this enterprise to bring women back into the workforce as well as in its own work practices. I find that as an employment facilitator the enterprise puts the onus on women to invest time to upskill themselves. As an employment provider that is planning to scale up, it is moving towards a less flexible model of work practices. Moreover, the continuous working trajectory is still considered the norm and women returnees are monetarily penalized for their career break.","PeriodicalId":176951,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 3rd ACM SIGCAS Conference on Computing and Sustainable Societies","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-06-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126928525","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Building on this literature, we report deployment experiences from three different studies in India that used airtime incentives. The first was used to promote awareness about HIV/AIDS, the second for promoting awareness and surveying preparedness for an upcoming election, and the third to measure learning and encourage people to vote in a conflict-hit region for a different election. Unlike past work, we found that a delivery mechanism that focuses on asking questions first, rather than presenting a tutorial and then asking questions, worked well in practice. In addition, we found multiple challenges in adoption of the technology and tried different ways to incentivize peer sharing of our system. Between the three deployments, we also addressed other technical and human-centered challenges such as delayed airtime payments and people using the system on behalf of someone else. We hope that our experiences and insights can be helpful to others seeking to deploy applications that utilize mobile airtime payments for learning, sharing, and survey response.","PeriodicalId":176951,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 3rd ACM SIGCAS Conference on Computing and Sustainable Societies","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-06-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131359457","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we attempt to use politicians' tweets as a metric of their affinities using representation learning, by modifying the Word2Vec method such that politicians are directly encoded into a Euclidean space. Our analysis of Indian politicians shows that the relatively populous, linguistically more homogeneous northern states are cohesively clustered based on their party affiliations, whereas southern states cluster based on geography. We propose that computational methods can be useful in examining the tensions of regionalist tendencies against dominant national political narratives.","PeriodicalId":176951,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 3rd ACM SIGCAS Conference on Computing and Sustainable Societies","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-06-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134197598","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The data collected on 725 projects in Rang De - India's first microfinance platform, which mainly serves female borrowers - show that, even when fundraisers can be digitally and socially disconnected from their funders, funding success is more a matter of environment and organisational factors than of project-specific characteristics. This differs from what developed country crowdfunding research suggests. The importance and gender-specific role of intermediaries is also acknowledged, driving more attention to gender-equality and to the digital divide problems in entrepreneurship for development.","PeriodicalId":176951,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 3rd ACM SIGCAS Conference on Computing and Sustainable Societies","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-06-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127750756","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, their use poses special challenges and few articles have reported specifically on digital technology interventions for vulnerable populations. This article shares our experience from the Tika Vaani (\"vaccine voice\") Intervention which uses a combined face-to-face and mHealth strategy to educate and empower beneficiaries to improve immunization uptake and child health for a poor, low-literate population in rural Uttar Pradesh, India. Based on the mERA checklist, a guide to improve the completeness of reporting mHealth interventions, we provide information about the process of development, implementation and lessons for scaling up the Tika Vaani intervention. This study contributes to the literature to improve reporting on mHealth interventions and provide researchers with key points and actions to take during intervention development to serve hard-to-reach communities and improve health outcomes.","PeriodicalId":176951,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 3rd ACM SIGCAS Conference on Computing and Sustainable Societies","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-06-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128606307","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Teachers' impact on educational outcomes can be improved by teacher training programs but these programs are limited by poor infrastructure in rural areas. Although infrastructural challenges can be overcome by information technology today, it is unclear how such technology can support teacher training. Therefore to explore opportunities for teacher training in rural developing contexts with technology, we conducted interviews and observations with 22 primary school teachers in two regions of rural Côte d'Ivoire. We followed an aspirations-based approach that focuses on the user's aspirations (long term desires) to help understand teachers' intrinsic desire to grow in their professional life. We found that teacher aspirations conflict with their current role but their solidarity helps them find education role models who balance this conflict. We found that teachers face challenges in teacher training but they handle issues through their solidarity and by creating solutions. We then discuss ways to measure impact on aspirations, designing for conflicting aspirations and to leverage aspirations to create a social change in teacher training using technology.","PeriodicalId":176951,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 3rd ACM SIGCAS Conference on Computing and Sustainable Societies","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-06-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128614212","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the last two decades of the twentieth century, computer-aided newspaper production technology gradually started becoming popular in Bangladesh, making the traditional hot metal typesetting technology obsolete. The typesetters, who relied on manual labor and a very basic level of literacy, experienced mass layoffs and had to adapt to new technology to survive in their profession. In this work, we interviewed 17 typesetters from that period to understand their technology adoption dynamics. Our findings reveal that despite a few success stories, most of the typesetters failed to adopt and gradually went into oblivion, mainly because of local infrastructural issues. We connect our findings to broader issues of culture, politics, and economics and provide concrete suggestions and policy recommendations to protect more than six million workers who are vulnerable to technology-induced job displacement in the next 20 years in Bangladesh.","PeriodicalId":176951,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 3rd ACM SIGCAS Conference on Computing and Sustainable Societies","volume":"55 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-06-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124759624","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Our study aims to investigate Bangladeshi users' motivation to join and strategies to manage their Facebook groups and identify the relevant challenges. In our ongoing work, we are conducting a survey and interviewing Facebook-group users to understand how Facebook groups are bringing the users of similar interest and agenda together on Facebook and providing the admins with imagined sovereignty. This poster presents some of our crucial findings. This set of findings will be useful in designing better tools for managing Facebook groups for empowering the admins and the users.","PeriodicalId":176951,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 3rd ACM SIGCAS Conference on Computing and Sustainable Societies","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-06-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123089508","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
