In the proposed system, MIMO-EQ equalizes the channel into a temporal intersymbol interference (ISI)-free channel, and then a simple linear processing is used to perform the maximum likelihood (ML) decoding for ST-BC. Our simulation results show that the proposed system can achieve the full spatial diversity gain.","PeriodicalId":176763,"journal":{"name":"1999 IEEE Pacific Rim Conference on Communications, Computers and Signal Processing (PACRIM 1999). In a WPDMA environment, each message signal is waveform coded onto a wavelet function to enhance the immunity of the system against interference. We propose a wavelet design method based on numerical optimization to mitigate the effects of asynchronism in the system. In brief, the algorithm consists of two parts: (a) identification of the feasible region, and (b) use of a quasi-Newton search algorithm to find the minimizer. By employing this technique, we found the optimal wavelet function which minimizes the interference due to timing errors. The advantages of the proposed WPDMA design algorithm with respect to a previously reported procedure are discussed.","PeriodicalId":176763,"journal":{"name":"1999 IEEE Pacific Rim Conference on Communications, Computers and Signal Processing (PACRIM 1999). We derive an adaptive bandwidth allocation control mechanism for the DQDB CO data service. Error detection and concealment techniques, which are applicable to such block-based motion estimation video coders as H.263 and MPEG, are proposed. An error concealment scheme by post-processing to hide visual artifacts and residual errors is utilized at the decoder. Those techniques recovering the damaged areas based on characteristics of image and video signals are implemented using both spatial interpolation and temporal motion estimation. Based on the international standard H.263, experimental results including video transmission characteristics over noisy channels are presented for a bit rate of 9.6kbps and QCIF resolution. It is shown that the proposed error concealment technique by post-processing enhances the decoder performance in terms of the reconstructed image quality represented by PSNR and doesn't require sacrifice of system overhead.","PeriodicalId":176763,"journal":{"name":"1999 IEEE Pacific Rim Conference on Communications, Computers and Signal Processing (PACRIM 1999). Consequently, as the cell size is decreased, cochannel interference (CCI) becomes a dominant impairment in system performance rather than additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN). Thus, precise CCI models are important in the analysis of such systems. This paper presents an exact CCI model for angle modulation systems. They have several applications such as ATM switching, distributed processing, and optical implementation of sorting. In this paper we investigate the fault-tolerance properties of a special class of sorting networks called the odd-even transposition sorting networks. These networks have a simple and reliable hardware structure, which is easy to implement with VLSI technology. A simulation program of these networks' operation has been developed in C++. The simulation results revealed two important properties of odd-even transposition sorting networks: Any single stuck-at-X fault occurring in an internal comparator is redundant. And any two stuck-at-X faults occurring in a large number of internal comparators is redundant.","PeriodicalId":176763,"journal":{"name":"1999 IEEE Pacific Rim Conference on Communications, Computers and Signal Processing (PACRIM 1999). A parallel acquisition scheme is adopted since it achieves faster acquisition than serial acquisition schemes. Acquisition performance is evaluated in terms of mean acquisition time, and acquisition-based capacity is discussed. It is shown that the imperfect power control increases mean acquisition time substantially when the standard deviation of received power is above 1 dB. The results in this paper can be applied to the reverse link design of a CDMA system.","PeriodicalId":176763,"journal":{"name":"1999 IEEE Pacific Rim Conference on Communications, Computers and Signal Processing (PACRIM 1999). This choice has three advantages: First, test vectors can be easily generated by efficient ATPG tools. Second, the number of patterns included in test sets is usually limited; this implies short simulation times. Third, since test vectors tend to sensitize most of the internal nodes of a circuit, a good distribution of the samples considered for power analysis is guaranteed. Unfortunately, using test vectors for power simulation has a drawback: In normal operation mode, only the most common functionalities of a circuit are exercised. On the contrary, test sets tend to sensitize a larger number of behaviors; therefore, there may be cases in which estimation results are not very accurate. In this paper, we provide results of an experimental investigation we have carried out on the use of test sets for power simulation. We report comparative data for standard benchmark circuits; in addition, we consider a realistic case study for which input streams can be generated using RTL simulation.","PeriodicalId":176763,"journal":{"name":"1999 IEEE Pacific Rim Conference on Communications, Computers and Signal Processing (PACRIM 1999). It exploits diversity combining and signal separation techniques borrowed from the signal processing problem to recycle the information in those collided data packets, so as not to introduce throughput penalties. In this paper, we take into account the ARQ mechanism superimposed on the NDMA scheme, and study the performance of the complete data link control. The embedded Markov chain and M/G/1 queue model are used to analyze the traffic in the channel.
