This paper presents a new direction finder which is a digital, frequency domain version of ABM. It obtains bearing estimation at each frequency bin and combines them to give a weighted average. Bias reduction and interference nulling are easy to incorporate into the scheme. Simulation studies show that this new direction finder has much lower estimation errors than the ABM, and can easily null out a sinusoidal interference.","PeriodicalId":176763,"journal":{"name":"1999 IEEE Pacific Rim Conference on Communications, Computers and Signal Processing (PACRIM 1999). Many new tools are being developed. However, tools for the design of real-time systems are still scarce. This paper presents a working environment for the development of real-time systems. This working environment is a collection of CASE tools, which are a heavy graphical orientation intended for the specification, analysis, design, and implementation of large and complex real-time systems by object-oriented techniques. It enables a user to use object-oriented techniques to prepare, analyze, and debug diagrammatic, yet precise descriptions of the objects of the system under development from five interrelated points of views: capturing environment, functionality, behavior, performance and hardware. In addition to the use of performance analysis tools, the main novelty of our working environment is in the fact that it can design real-time systems at different levels of granularity, carry out rigorous execution, simulation and animation of the described system, and create running code automatically.","PeriodicalId":176763,"journal":{"name":"1999 IEEE Pacific Rim Conference on Communications, Computers and Signal Processing (PACRIM 1999). Simultaneous service allows a computer data connection to the Internet without impairing full use of the customer telephone station set. Our method employs a bi-directional frequency translation method together with standard \"off-the-shelf\" voiceband modems to implement voice and data frequency division multiplexing. Two experimental prototype frequency translators were constructed and used with 14.4, 28.8 and 33.6 kb/s modems. Operation was demonstrated on unloaded and on modified loaded lines at distances beyond the reach of ADSL equipment.","PeriodicalId":176763,"journal":{"name":"1999 IEEE Pacific Rim Conference on Communications, Computers and Signal Processing (PACRIM 1999). This paper develops an analytical framework for modeling and analyzing the impact of technological factors on the cost-performance trade-offs in distributed router architectures. The main trade-off in a distributed router results naturally from moving the main packet forwarding and processing power from a centralized forwarding engine to an ensemble of smaller forwarding engines either dedicated to or shared among the line cards. Processing packets in these smaller engines can be much cheaper (by as much two to three orders of magnitude) than in a centralized forwarding engine. Therefore, the main goal of our modeling framework is to determine an optimal allocation of processing power to the forwarding engines (in a distributed router) to minimize overall router cost while achieving a given level of packet forwarding performance. Two types of router models are analyzed using the proposed framework: a distributed router architecture and parallel router architecture.","PeriodicalId":176763,"journal":{"name":"1999 IEEE Pacific Rim Conference on Communications, Computers and Signal Processing (PACRIM 1999). The conventional algorithms based on search cannot find solutions in practical time due to combinatorial explosion. Our algorithms can find better solutions in practical time than any heuristic algorithms because they search only the search space where better solutions are likely to exist using good heuristics. The first solution candidate that the grouping priority levels (GP) method finds is the same as the solution given by the heuristic algorithm with no search. So it will find some solutions better or equal to ones given by the heuristic algorithm.","PeriodicalId":176763,"journal":{"name":"1999 IEEE Pacific Rim Conference on Communications, Computers and Signal Processing (PACRIM 1999). Four auxiliary horizontal dipole antennas, configured in the form of two separate crosses, are used to form an adaptive system with the vertically polarized antennas (VPA) of a HFSWR system. The outputs of the horizontal dipoles are correlated with the summed output of the VPAs to cancel the interference component in the output of the VPAs. Two slightly different methods are used in the estimation of the correlation coefficients. The first method uses the samples at the far ranges of the radar. The second method uses the samples in the nearby range bins. The results of using the first method have been presented by Leong (see RADAR'97, IEE Conf., Edinburgh, Scotland, p.26-30, 1997). Here we present the results of using the second method. With the first method, the interference-plus-noise power (INP) is reduced by more than 13 dB, and the Bragg-to-interference-plus-noise-ratio (BINR) increases by up to 21 dB. With the second method, the INP is reduced by more than 17 dB, and the BINR increases by up to 25 dB. Both sets of the results show that the adaptive techniques are effective in suppressing the skywave interference.","PeriodicalId":176763,"journal":{"name":"1999 IEEE Pacific Rim Conference on Communications, Computers and Signal Processing (PACRIM 1999).
