This antenna requires flexible, lightweight, and low loss feeders to element radiators. This module comprised of a microstrip-to-slot transition, two chips of low-noise MMIC amplifiers, and a laser diode module is fabricated on an ultrathin package with 10/spl times/30/spl times/1.5 mm3 in size and 2 g in weight to achieve an ultra-thin structure of active phased array antenna panels. To provide low noise and ultra-thin size, DCCPWs are employed in the design of input matching circuit of low-noise MMIC amplifiers. In addition, the ultra-thin structure is attributed to the design of laser diode modules using silicon V-groove technology and fiber alignment method.","PeriodicalId":176577,"journal":{"name":"International Topical Meeting on Microwave Photonics. In order to move microwave photonics technology for array antennas beyond the proof-of-concept phase and to compete with alternate approaches, the community must be quicker to grasp the systems issues involved. This paper surveys some of the photonics techniques for optical control of array antennas, addresses the system-level issues for technology insertion and discusses some of the competing technologies.","PeriodicalId":176577,"journal":{"name":"International Topical Meeting on Microwave Photonics. A computer controlled light source photo-injects a spatially varying plasma into a photoconducting wafer. The light-modified wafer forms MMW beams from 20 to 100 GHz and scans them /spl plusmn/30/spl deg/ in two-dimensions. Beam scan rates are greater than 1000 beams per second with excellent beam control in software. Scanning antennas based on this approach promise to be fast, inexpensive, and easily controlled.","PeriodicalId":176577,"journal":{"name":"International Topical Meeting on Microwave Photonics. Moreover, we have developed an example radio on fiber demonstrator for ITS, which integrated Electric Toll Collection (ETC) and Japanese PHS systems. The proposed system is based on the coherent heterodyne of 1550 nm infrared signals generated at a central location and then distributed over optical fiber to each antenna. The length of each fiber is held constant by a servo system which uses an optical interferometer to measure the fiber path length. The difference between the two laser frequencies is converted at the receivers to a radio frequency (RF) signal by a high-speed photomixer.","PeriodicalId":176577,"journal":{"name":"International Topical Meeting on Microwave Photonics.
