But, analysing video images manually to study and evaluate marine habitats is a lengthy and tedious task. This paper proposes an automatic method to detect the Norway lobster (Nephrops Norvegicus) an important east-Atlantic and Mediterranean wide-distributed commercial crustacean species, in order to reduce the time and effort it takes marine scientists to manually quantify them. Here, the detection procedure follows a human visual attention model. Three visual attention features are considered: intensity map (IM), edge map (EM), and motion map (MM). The work is composed of two main parts: first the three feature maps are extracted; then, all candidate regions are processed and categorized in view of lobsters detection. Experimental results show that the proposed methodology is able to reliably detect candidate regions after combining the partial results.","PeriodicalId":176384,"journal":{"name":"2007 15th European Signal Processing Conference","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-09-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124529886","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Chaotic signals are non-periodic, wideband, and more difficult to predict, to reconstruct, and to characterize than periodic carriers. These properties of chaotic signals make it more difficult to intercept and decode the information modulated upon them. In this paper, we introduce modifications on DCSK to enhance the privacy by eliminating the similarity in the output samples by a chaotic mask, and faster by reducing the delay time. We analyze then the performance of the proposed modulation for different parameters and by comparison with other variants of DCSK.","PeriodicalId":176384,"journal":{"name":"2007 15th European Signal Processing Conference","volume":"103 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-09-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124571328","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Considering context in which these symbols occur can lead to improved compression. In wavelet-based coding same contexts are usually used for all wavelet subbands of same type across different scales of wavelet transform. Efficiency of different strategies for context selection has not yet been fully analysed for application in scalable wavelet-based video coding. In this paper an algorithm for context modelling based on tree structure is adapted for optimisation of contexts for symbols generated during Embedded ZeroBlock Coding (EZBC) of wavelet coefficients. With the proposed technique optimised contexts have been adaptively obtained for different wavelet subbands and EZBC quadtree levels. Comparison with predefined context models, which are used in common approach, shows that context models based on tree structure together with advanced modelling strategy significantly improve overall compression.","PeriodicalId":176384,"journal":{"name":"2007 15th European Signal Processing Conference","volume":"162 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-09-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128832411","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The movement of endosomes can be analyzed by using fluorescence microscopy and by producing videos of few seconds length. Movement analysis done by a human specialist is usually unappealing because it is both time consuming and difficult, also the results depend always on the person doing the analysis. By automating the movement analysis we can ease and speed up the process, and the results would also be easily replicable. The paper presents a new tracking approach for endosome movement based on the double exponential smoothing. When compared to Kalman filter, a commonly used movement predictor, the proposed method proved to be simpler to implement, with lower running time and with good results. Also, the paper shows ways to express the movement of the tracked endosomes.","PeriodicalId":176384,"journal":{"name":"2007 15th European Signal Processing Conference","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-09-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117015557","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Our goal is to predict earthquakes using EM radiation waves. We have been measuring the Extremely Low Frequency (ELF) range all over Japan. However, the recorded data contain signals unrelated to earthquakes. These signals, as noise, confound earthquake prediction efforts. It is necessary to eliminate noises from observed signals in a preprocessing step. In this paper, we propose a method for global signal elimination using Non-negative Matrix Factorization (NMF) and evaluate the effectiveness of this method.","PeriodicalId":176384,"journal":{"name":"2007 15th European Signal Processing Conference","volume":"133 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-09-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117295544","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This is done by fusing the separation abilities of two well-known BSS algorithms: EFICA and WASOBI. Simulations show that our approach is at least as accurate and often more accurate that other state-of-the-art approaches which also aim to separate simultaneously non-Gaussian and time-correlated components. However, in terms of computational efficiency and stability, FCOMBI is the clear winner which makes it specially suitable for the analysis of very high-dimensional datasets like high-density Electroencephalographic(EEG) or Magnetoencephalographic (MEG) recordings.","PeriodicalId":176384,"journal":{"name":"2007 15th European Signal Processing Conference","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-09-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115468172","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We consider an approach based on joint-diagonalization of some hermitian matrices constructed by a family of spatial complex cross-wavelet transform. We show that mixing matrix can be estimated by using some algebraic properties of considered matrices. Computer simulations are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method, which is compared with other approach based on the joint-diagonalization.","PeriodicalId":176384,"journal":{"name":"2007 15th European Signal Processing Conference","volume":"32 19-20","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-09-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114101088","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Based on different sets of audio features (MFCC, MPITCH, BEAT, STFT) of all available songs, different clusterings of songs are obtained. Users are given recommendations from one of these clusterings. The right clustering for a user is determined based on the Shannon entropy of the distribution of songs the user listened in each clustering. Using this content based recommendation scheme, as opposed to a static set of features resulted in upto 60 percent increase in recommendation success. In addition to the audio features (content) of songs user listened, the singers for the songs and also the most popular songs at the time of recommendation are also available. We introduce two recommendation algorithms that decide on the weight of content cluster, singer cluster and popularity adaptively for each user, based on the user history. Our experiments on user session data consisting of 2000 to 500 sessions and of length 5 to 15 indicate that these adaptive recommendation schemes give better recommendation results than using only content based recommendation.","PeriodicalId":176384,"journal":{"name":"2007 15th European Signal Processing Conference","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-09-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127788856","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
