A considerable increase in the rate of tree stand damage was discovered in the late 1970s-early 1980s, attributable to an increase in SO2 emissions. The zone of forest degradation zone now extends for up to 200 km leeward of the major emissions sources and tree stands have been killed at distances of up to 80 to 100 km.","PeriodicalId":175956,"journal":{"name":"Mapping Sciences & Remote Sensing","volume":"107 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1995-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123866009","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This makes possible a substantial increase in the accuracy in determining actual biomass of agricultural crops. It is shown that the use of measurement data not only for brightness, but also for the polarization of radiation ascending from the sensed object, ensures a quite reliable assessment of the share of damaged agricultural crops.","PeriodicalId":175956,"journal":{"name":"Mapping Sciences & Remote Sensing","volume":"42 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1995-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115816288","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Unlike earlier studies, the present project attempts to provide spatially comprehensive coverage of vegetation impacts, according to a standardized methodology for their assessment. A reduction in the number of feature classes identifiable upon a change from visual interpretation to automated classification based on spectral brightness values made it necessary to test alternative classification procedures (based on brightness ratios and the normalized vegetation index).","PeriodicalId":175956,"journal":{"name":"Mapping Sciences & Remote Sensing","volume":"115 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1995-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123969531","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

More specifically, maps of combustible plant materials and of basic fire-conducting materials are compiled at intermediate scales based on air photo interpretation and field studies. These maps in turn are a part of a complex of tools (maps of actual dryness values at specific times of year, knowledge of the location of topographic and other barriers to the spread of fire, and information about particular sources of fire) that can be used to assess the potential consequences of forest fires and to plan measures for combating them. A general section devoted to the methodology of using space imagery to compile maps of the age of contemporary landscapes precedes a description of the procedures used to determine the age of landscapes in the southern Aral Sea region. The latter procedures are based on information derived from a variety of sources, including knowledge of the duration of various stages of plant succession following abandonment of irrigated fields, archaeological data, ancient maps, and multitemporal space photographs. Excerpts from space imagery and interpretation maps are presented. Translated by Dorothy B.
