Therefore, this study tested whether brief, gentle stroking can function as a positive reinforcer in adolescent rats. We employed a within-subject conditioned place preference design consisting of two conditioning cycles, each comprising 10 alternating daily sessions, in which, on rewarded days, rats received three 1-min stroking epochs embedded within a 15-min compartment exposure (total stroking time: 3 min/day). The animals experienced alternating sessions of stroking on the experimenter’s palm or a neutral handling procedure. The results indicated that rats showed a reliable increase in preference for the stroking-paired compartment across conditioning, demonstrating that minimal tactile contact was sufficient to induce place conditioning. These findings suggest that structured human–animal tactile interaction can elicit motivated behavior and provide a practical refinement of routine handling protocols in laboratory settings to enhance animal welfare.</div></div>","PeriodicalId":17567,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Veterinary Behavior-clinical Applications and Research","volume":"83 ","pages":"Pages 35-39"},"PeriodicalIF":1.6,"publicationDate":"2026-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"145570941","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As behavioral effects vary and there are few health benefits, reversible chemical castration (CC) may be used prior to surgical castration (SC), to ensure desired effects thereof. We aimed to gain insight on when and why CC is used and how dog owners report on its effects. We used Chi-square tests to analyze online survey data of a convenience sample of 404 dog owners, most of which were (applied) university educated women. The most common reason for CC was testing the influence of SC on behavior. Similar numbers of owners subsequently left their dog intact or opted for SC. The most common reason for leaving intact was negative behavioral effects of CC. Owner-reported effects of CC and SC were completely or largely the same in 81.7% of the cases. Our findings might aid clinical practitioners, and prompt dog owners to opt for CC when they consider castration, to assure themselves that future SC will have the desired effects.</div></div>","PeriodicalId":17567,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Veterinary Behavior-clinical Applications and Research","volume":"83 ","pages":"Pages 14-19"},"PeriodicalIF":1.6,"publicationDate":"2026-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"145532369","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These behaviors can negatively affect human-dog relationships, contribute to neighborhood disturbances, and, in severe cases, lead to dog abandonment. This research aimed to investigate the prevalence, common behaviors, and associated factors of SRBs in Thai dogs. Data were collected from a national survey involving 1827 participants, utilizing demographic details and an SRB-specific questionnaire. The questionnaire included 12 signs rated on a scale of 0–4, with 4 indicating the highest frequency. Dogs were classified as having SRBs if their total score was at least 8, and severity was categorized as mild-to-moderate (score 8–13) or moderate-to-severe (score <u>&gt;</u> 14). Factors associated with moderate-to-severe SRBs were further analyzed. The overall prevalence of SRBs was 80.24% (n = 1466), with 43.95% (n = 803) exhibiting moderate-to-severe SRBs. Overexcitation, often accompanied by vocalization and destructive behaviors, was the most common SRB. Associated factors linked to moderate-to-severe SRBs included dog characteristics (age, breed, reproductive status), guardian demographics (age), dog-human interactions (walking frequency and duration), and environmental factors (house type). Higher prevalence of moderate-to-severe SRBs were observed in younger dogs, intact dogs, young guardians, those who rarely walked their dogs, and dogs in smaller homes. Therefore, we propose increasing walking frequency and duration, training dogs to become comfortable with being alone for periods of time and providing more education on dog care and behavior to guardians, as these measures may help reduce the risk of SRBs.</div></div>","PeriodicalId":17567,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Veterinary Behavior-clinical Applications and Research","volume":"82 ","pages":"Pages 43-51"},"PeriodicalIF":1.6,"publicationDate":"2025-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"145270823","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A behavioral consultation identified fear-based defensive aggression with territorial traits as the primary diagnosis. The case was managed through a multimodal approach, involving the expertise of a veterinary behaviorist and a reproductive medicine specialist, along with pharmacological sterilization using a 4.7 mg deslorelin implant. To reduce the expected flare-up caused by the GnRH agonist, gabapentin (10 mg/kg PO q. 12 h for 21 days) was administered, and behavioral management strategies were implemented. A temporary resurgence of aggression and marking occurred ten days after implantation, resolving spontaneously within four days. Improvements included cessation of urine marking, increased affiliative behaviors, and stable cohabitation with a younger tomcat also implanted after puberty. This case highlights the importance of a comprehensive, interdisciplinary treatment plan. The successful control of the flare-up phase with gabapentin and behavior modification is especially noteworthy, as it may serve as a model for similar hormone-mediated or fear-based behavioral issues. Owner education on feline emotional expression was also vital to the success of the treatment.</div></div>","PeriodicalId":17567,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Veterinary Behavior-clinical Applications and Research","volume":"82 ","pages":"Pages 66-70"},"PeriodicalIF":1.6,"publicationDate":"2025-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"145363939","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study examines the consistency of individual behaviors over time and potential differences between clone groups. Activity levels were consistent within individual pigs in the open field test. Conversely, the time spent close to the stimulus in the human approach test, and the novel object test was not consistent within individual pigs. Although it is recommended to examine dogs on the floor to minimize stress, it has yet to be empirically explored whether dogs experience less stress when on the floor compared to the examination table. The aim of this study was to assess the stress levels of family-owned dogs (<em>Canis familiaris)</em> (N=37) when examined on a table compared to the floor. We also assessed whether the dogs’ previous hospital experience affected their stress levels. The dogs underwent a standardized physical examination on the floor or table and were examined again on the opposite surface after a two-week washout period. Body stress scores and physiological parameters indicative of stress were recorded during the examinations. Two veterinary behavior specialists, blinded to the purpose of the study, assessed the body language of each dog during the examination. Physiological and behavioral data were analyzed using mixed regression models and ANOVAs. The results showed no significant difference in body language, heart rate and respiratory rate, but the temperature of male dogs was significantly higher when examined on the table than on the floor (<em>p</em> = 0.005). Contrary to dogs that had already been hospitalized, dogs that had never been hospitalized previously had a higher temperature when examined on the examination table than on the floor (<em>p</em> = 0.015). We concluded that no major differences were detected in response to being examined on the table versus the floor, suggesting that the location of the examination may not significantly impact dogs' stress levels as previously thought.</div></div>","PeriodicalId":17567,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Veterinary Behavior-clinical Applications and Research","volume":"82 ","pages":"Pages 20-27"},"PeriodicalIF":1.6,"publicationDate":"2025-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"145223140","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Until recently, the subthalamic nucleus has been associated solely with the basal ganglia motor circuitry, but the accumulated data from humans and animals revealed the importance of the subthalamic nucleus in associative and limbic functions. The purpose of this review is to gather the available information on cognitive and behavioral roles of the subthalamic nucleus in different species, and to use this information to hypothesize on the possible roles of the subthalamic nucleus in canine cognition and behavior. We describe many studies that show that the subthalamic nucleus has an important function in focused attention, inhibitory control, reward processing, reward-motivated learning, learning, and conflictual decision-making. In the paper, we argue that STN could have a role in many canine behaviors, relevant to humans and human-dog interactions, which rely on these cognitive processes. Furthermore, we provide some evidence for the involvement of the subthalamic nucleus in the pathophysiology of several behavioral disorders, such as impulsivity, aggression, and the obsessive - compulsive disorder. As they are shared by humans and dogs, this makes dogs useful natural animal models for these disorders. We argue that there may be a benefit, for both humans and their companions, to further investigate the role of the STN in these behavioral disorders in dogs, as it may help to improve both human and veterinary medicine and welfare.</div></div>","PeriodicalId":17567,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Veterinary Behavior-clinical Applications and Research","volume":"82 ","pages":"Pages 75-88"},"PeriodicalIF":1.6,"publicationDate":"2025-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"145516832","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
