With the FPGA implementation, the need of additional hardware could be minimized compared to most state-of-the-art data diode realizations. The proposed data diode is designed to use the available backplane bus communication protocol between the programmable logic controller (PLC) and its connected peripherals. To demonstrate the universal approach an open-source platform based on the Revolution Pi (RevPi) and its backplane bus is used. Principally the data diode behaves as a mirror presenting the complete protected system behind the high security zone including the RevPi controller and its devices to the information technology (IT) network. Another controller within the lower security zone is used to imitate the operational technology (OT) process. Our approach is not limited to the above controller and can be applied to any type of PLC. In this paper, we present a self-supervised learning method for training, not limited to but especially visual transformers that are able to learn meaningful representations of images and videos without requiring large amounts of labeled data. Our method is based on using exact solutions of the representations that the model generates. It is shown that the model is able to learn useful features that can be later fine-tuned on industrial downstream tasks. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our method on a subset of the Universal Image Embeddings 130k dataset [1], a private industrial Pill Identification dataset, and standard Cifar-10 dataset [20]. We show that our method outperforms solid baselines which are BYOL [2] and Barlow Twins [3] while using fewer parameters and resources. We show the capability of the trained model on a Deep Metric Learning task by comparing the Swin Transformer [4] backbones that are trained with our method, BYOL [2], and Barlow Twins [3]. The results also show that the proposed method achieves higher accuracy than others in pre-training and fine-tuning processes with fewer parameters. Hence, smart cities can be seen as an excellent showcase of heterogeneity, namely at the data level. For this reason, they are a perfect candidate for linked data and semantic web concept applications. This powerful combination leads to interoperability at the data level which is one of the ultimate goals of the Internet of Things (IoT). In this reference frame, NGSI-LD is an open framework for context information processing consisting of both a semantic information model and a RESTful Application Programming Interface (API). This paper proposes a methodology for creating semantic data models in the context of IoT, namely to represent and describe data associated with digital twins. This means new methods for engineering flexible production systems, the interconnection between production system, process, and product, need to occur, as contemporary methods are reaching their limits. While varying approaches try to address this problem on a small-scale, the need for holistic methodologies becomes obvious. Thus, this paper proposes a holistic solution by aligning the concepts of the Product, Process, and Resource (PPR) notation for engineering industrial systems according to the Reference Architecture Model Industrie 4.0 (RAMI 4.0). By doing so, each other’s disadvantages are counteracted. In more detail, RAMI 4.0 is missing a concrete modeling notation allowing it to be practically applied in systems engineering. At the same time, PPR reaches its limits regarding large-scale modeling systems across multiple domains or granularity levels. The result of this work, an applicable PPR modeling notation for engineering complex production systems, could strongly contribute to future Model-based Systems Engineering (MBSE) within this area, as a ready-to-use methodology the so-called RAMI Toolbox provides them. These criteria limit the computational and communications capabilities of such systems whereas system protection and data authentication have always been limitation factors due to security cost complexity.In this paper, we investigate and propose a simple, lightweight, and cost-effective watermark security method for Wireless sensor networks (WSNs). It is an improved version of our previous research on the metadata-enhanced cross-watermarking approach. The original watermark generator has been extended to achieve cipher block chaining integrating with side-channel watermarking. The watermark bits are hidden in the transmitting channel properties. Compared with the conventional centralized peer offloading strategies, the proposed full-decentralized peer offloading, based on federated learning, physically decentralizes peer offloading algorithm into edge computing, fully eliminating the rely on centralized servers (e.g., cloud). Meanwhile, compared with the other previous decentralized offloading schemes (blockchain-based, game theory-based, etc.), edge computing servers in this paper does not require global information to be shared, when they reach consensus of optimal peer offloading. In particular, the adjacent edge computing servers only share property-sensitive data (for the service providers of the edge computing servers) among each other, relying on which the whole edge computing network can reach global optimal peer offloading. In particular, the Module Type Package Concept described in VDI/VDE/NAMUR 2658 is seen as a possible core part for modularization. A clear separation of engineering efforts into plant-independent module engineering and plant-specific integration engineering as well as a fast integration of a module’s automation system into a higher-level process control system changes the fundamental automation architecture. However, in the state-of-the-art technical literature which has been analyzed and applied by the authors, few security considerations are made for modularization and especially the Module Type Package. This is even more problematic considering that even with an extensive field of security analysis, standards, and guidelines to secure conventional operational technology recent reports found severe vulnerabilities in those. This paper elaborates on security standards and guidelines to which the Module Type Package Concept should be compliant to achieve a high coverage regarding security requirements in the context of industrial automation and control systems. We have also proposed methods to introduce new policy-switching criteria and to add new policies to avoid freezing conditions. Compared to existing methods, we have shown that the method improves safety metric values (e.g., collision rate) even in narrow corridors; however, there are still challenges in achieving sufficient performance because safety and efficiency metric values fluctuate depending on the environment. In this paper, we propose an adaptive navigation method that uses sensing results to classify robot deployment environments into several groups and adaptively changes the policy-switching algorithm according to the environment. Specifically, we use collision risk and congestion level for the environment classification and associate the environment classes with appropriate control parameter values (i.e., parameter tuning) to achieve adaptive navigation. A cyber-attack targeting safety functions may in turn lead to hazards endangering people and the environment. Furthermore, misusing safety functions may impact availability by causing a machine or production line to stop working. This work analyzes how Austrian stakeholders of industrial automation enterprises address security and safety risks to mitigate undesired situations. The stakeholder analysis performed considers vendors of products or components, integrators, and asset owners of industrial systems. Secure infrastructures, system architectures, and risk management are subject areas of this analysis. The analysis was conducted in two phases. First, an online survey was created where the involved stakeholder offered their answer simultaneously. Considering the results of the survey, individual stakeholder workshops were carried out to obtain additional, more specific perceptions about the stakeholder’s OT system and components with respect to security and safety considerations. A variety of stateful applications exist that will require high availability on cloud infrastructures while also meeting the hard real-time requirements in the millisecond area of their superimposed processes, e.g., virtualized programmable logic controllers (vPLCs) and artificial intelligence inference services. This paper presents an approach for stateful applications on distributed systems to meet the application’s requirements in failover scenarios through state synchronization by means of Remote Direct Memory Access (RDMA). Experimental results with a software PLC confirm the effectiveness of the described approach in comparison to UDP-based synchronization, reducing the average synchronization time by up to 99.39%.
