Ten (10) apparently healthy local dogs comprising of five (5) females and five (5) males with Mean ± SD body weight of 20.4 ± 2.93 kg sought from Maiduguri and environs and randomly allocated into two groups A (n=5), B (n=5) were used to conduct the experiment for this study. Total Intravenous anesthesia (TIVA) was induced in all the dogs. Dogs in group A were premedicated with an intravenous injection of 0.005 mg/kg Medetomidine, followed by an intravenous injection of 0.25 mg/kg Diazepam and 4 mg/kg Ketamine combination 3 – 5 minutes later. Meanwhile group B dogs were given an intravenous injection of Medetomidine (0.005 mg/kg) and Ketamine (5 mg/kg) combination. Blood sample was collected for haematological analysis while serum was collected to assay Total protein (TP), Alanine Aminotransferase (ALT), Blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and Creatinine (Cr) using standard laboratory protocols. There was no significant difference (p>0.05) in the measured haematological indices, ALT, BUN, Cr and TP in both groups A and B throughout the study. However, there was non-significant decrease in ALT, BUN, Cr and TP in both groups up to 30 minutes post administration of the drug combinations but return to almost baseline values at 60 minutes post anaesthesia. The results of this study showed that intravenous administration of Medetomidine-Diazepam-Ketamine and Medetomidine-Ketamine combinations have no significant effects on haematological indices and serum chemistry profile of dogs. Therefore, these anaesthetic combinations can be prescribed for clinical use and procedures in dogs.","PeriodicalId":17442,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences","volume":"96 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"85104114","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Several homoeostatic mechanisms go on within the body in order to keep these fluids and electrolytes relatively constant. When these mechanisms are overwhelmed, life-threatening imbalances can occur rapidly. The use of fluid therapy is viewed as a medical therapy just as important as other medications in the management of sick or debilitated livestock where anaesthesia and/or surgery is required. It therefore, becomes imperative to review its uses and effect in small ruminants. Fluid therapy in any patient should aim to; replace existing deficits, replace on-going water and electrolyte loss, meet maintenance requirements and serve as a vehicle for the infusion of certain intravenous medications. In order to ensure appropriate fluid therapy, the volume of fluid deficit, type of fluid required and the route of administration should be punctiliously considered.","PeriodicalId":17442,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences","volume":"12 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"80691180","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A total of 500 dogs were examined for ticks, endo, and haemoparasites by standard methods. Of the 500 dogs screened, 145 (29.0%) were positive for ticks, 280 (56.0%) were positive for endoparasites, while 55 (11.0%) for haemoparasites. Ticks detected comprised Amblyomma variegatum (1.6%) and Rhipicephalus sanguineus (27.4%), while endoparasites detected included Ancylostoma caninum (12.0%), Dipylidium caninum (10.0%), Isospora oocysts (10.0%), Taenia hydatigena (8.0%), Toxocara canis (12.0%) and Trichuris vulpis (4.0%) and haemoparasites detected were Babesia canis (10.2%) and Ehrlichia canis (0.8%). There was no statistically significant difference in the sex, age, location, and the breeds of dogs with the infestation of parasites. Though the prevalence was higher in females and young dogs examined. It was concluded that some species of the ticks, endoparasites, and haemoparasites present a public health concern considering that dogs are pet and companion animals, therefore regular treatment and tick control should be introduced.","PeriodicalId":17442,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences","volume":"8 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"82087086","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The postmortem also revealed a compacted fracture of the last two lumbar vertebrae. The most common causes of atrio-ventricular obstruction in dogs are cardiac tumors. The diagnosis of cardiac neoplasia is usually based on clinical history, physical examination, Urinalysis, radiographic, and echocardiographic methods. Atrioventricular obstruction causes slow conduction throughout the atrioventricular node with variable prognosis ranging from good to sudden death. In this case report, diagnosis was based on Haematology, Urinalysis, Xray, chemical pathology and postmortem findings. The result of cardiac gross pathology revealed a dark red mass attached to the endocardium just proximal to the aortic valve leaflet. Laboratory findings inclusive of the urinalysis were within the normal range..","PeriodicalId":17442,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences","volume":"238 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"79707377","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Forty-nine rats were randomly assigned to seven groups of seven rats each (A – G). Group A was the uninfected untreated control while groups B – G were infected with 1.4 × 106. Groups C and D were treated with 3.5 mg/kg DD once and for five consecutive days while group B was left untreated. Groups E and F were treated with 7 mg/kg DD once and for five consecutive days while group G was treated with 7 mg/kg DD and repeated after 14 days. The effect of varied doses and treatment regimen was evaluated using parasites clearance and relapse of infection. Parasitaemia was established 4 – 9 days post infection in all groups except for one rat in Group G. Trypanosomes were cleared 3 – 5 days post treatment (PT) in all the treated groups. Trypanosomes relapsed in groups C, D, E, F, and group G on days 14, 42, 25, 56, and 39 post treatment, respectively. Relapse also occurred in about 67% of the rats in Group D and 14% of the rats in Group F within 80 days post treatment (PT). Increasing the dosage and or extending the duration of treatment with DD, marginally delayed the clearance of parasite in the infected rats but delayed the onset of relapse and reduced its occurrence in the infected rats. The curative efficacy of DD in this study appeared to be dose dependent as increasing the dosage and duration of treatment elicited a better therapeutic outcome. However, further experimental trials are imperative in rats and other animal species..","PeriodicalId":17442,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences","volume":"36 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"75286926","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Different models are used to study cancer in vivo and in vitro. Facilities for many of the studies are not available in developing countries. Genetically modified mice for in vivo model may not be available. Cyclosporine is an immunosuppresant drug that may be used to alter mice immunity necessary for development of implanted xenograft cancer tissues. Mice were randomly separated into four groups of five and subcutaneously administered cyclosporine at different doses (5, 20 and 40 mg/kg including negative control) daily for twentyone days. At seven days of drug administration, cancer tissues from prostate cancer human patients were administered to all mice. Body weights of mice were measured at weekly interval. Tumor-like nodules were observed at the site of cancer inoculation and when present were measured. Gross pathology and histopathology were performed. The results showed significant (p< 0.05) increase in body weight gain in only control group where cyclosporine was not administered. The number of tumor-like growth (first observed at day 14) per group and the magnitude of swelling vary directly (p < 0.05) with cyclosporine dose. Mortality varies inversely with the dose. No lesions were observed from the gross pathology. Histopathology revealed presence of neutrophil, plasma cells and oedema with no cancer cells detected. It was concluded that cyclosporine at the dose of 20 mg/kg in mice followed by administration of prostate cancer tissue caused decrease in body weight gain and allow growth of nodule bulging at the site of cancer tissue administration..","PeriodicalId":17442,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences","volume":"76 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"83892595","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

There are several strains of which some are harmless while some are pathogenic causing various fatal conditions in both humans and animals. A cross sectional study was conducted to determine the occurrence of E. coli and detection of virulent genes of E. coli isolated from liver, spleen and small intestine of donkeys slaughtered in Maraban Idah, Kaduna State, Nigeria. A total of 384 samples were collected from 128 donkeys from April to August 2018 based on owners’ consent. The samples were analyzed using standard methods of cultural enrichment, growth on selective media, biochemical test for identification and isolation of E. coli. Multiplex PCR was then used to detect presence of virulence genes in the E. coli isolates. The isolation rate was 5.2 % with organ distribution of 4.7 %. 4.7 % and 6.3 % for the intestine, liver and spleen respectively. Nineteen (19) of the 20 positive isolates profiled haboured different combinations of virulent genes viz: stx1-rfbO157-hlyA (n=2), stx1-rfbO157-eaeA-hlyA (n=6), stx1-eaeA (n=4), stx1-rfbO157 (n=1), stx1-rfbO157-eaeA (n=3), eaeA-hlyA (n=1), stx1-eaeA-hlyA (n=1) stx1-hlyA (n=1) hlyA (n=1) gene. This study showed that 60% of the isolates had the rfbO157 gene (E. coli O157 serotype), which is of great public health importance. Therefore, proper sanitation and hygienic practices should be ensured during and after slaughtering donkeys.","PeriodicalId":17442,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences","volume":"10 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"84329299","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A cross-sectional survey was conducted in Jakusko Yobe North to determine the seroprevalence and risk factors associated with brucellosis. A total of 250 sera samples were collected aseptically from the jugular vein of sheep of both sex and different age groups, sera were screened against Brucella spp. using Rose Bengal Plate test (RBPT). The seroprevalence of 10.4% was recorded out of 250 sheep sampled, with the prevalence rates of 12.1% and 8.3% for female and male sheep respectively. There was no significant difference between sex and Brucella infection (OR = 0.6565, 95% CI = 0.2806 – 1.536, p = 0.443). Seroprevalence obtained was higher in sheep above two years (14.6%) but the seroprevalence was lower in sheep below two years (5.8 %), there was significant statistical difference between the age of sheep and Brucella infection (OR = 0.3619, 95% CI = 1463 – 0.8951, p = 0.0364). Though, brucellosis was reported in all the locations of sheep sampled, but there was no significant difference between the location of sheep. The study indicated the presence of Brucella infection in Jakusko and this is the first report of brucellosis in the study area, which is of public health significant because of the close contact between people and their animals. The study was aimed to determine the seasonal variations in haematological and biochemical parameters of horses developing laminitis at Polo Club Port Harcourt, River State, Nigeria. A total of 18 horses were sampled during the dry season (February) and rainy season (July). The horses sampled were aged between 3 and 8 years. The hoof temperature, weight, packed cell volume (PCV), red blood cell (RBC) count, hemoglobin (Hb) concentration, total and differential leucocyte counts, glucose level and fibrinogen concentration were determined using standard methods. The mean hoof temperature of the horses was 36.1± 0.11oC and 35.6 ± 0.2 oC during the dry and rainy season respectively. The mean body weight of the horses was 323 ± 8.90 kg in dry season while that of rainy season was 330 ± 11.0 kg. Glucose concentration during the dry season (71.6 ± 1.5 dl/mg) was significantly lower (P ˂ 0.05) than that obtained during the rainy season (91.7 ± 1.9 dl/mg). Furthermore, the PCV, RBC count and Hb concentration were significantly higher (P ˂ 0.05) in the rainy season than the corresponding parameters in the dry season. Similarly, the total leucocyte, neutrophil and lymphocyte counts were significantly higher (P ˂ 0.05) during the rainy season than the dry season. It was concluded that variations on the parameters determined may aid to identify early warning signs of laminitis.","PeriodicalId":17442,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences","volume":"37 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"73235257","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Adult Wistar rats were grouped into 5 (consisting of 5 rats each). Rats in group A were administered normal saline (30 ml/kg P.O) to serve as negative control. Rats in groups. B, C and D were pretreated with graded doses of the extract (50, 100, and 200 mg/kg P.O). Rats in group E were treated with Cimetidine (50 mg/kg P.O) to serve as the positive control. Ulceration was induced in all groups afterwards and gross examination of the excised stomach revealed a dose-dependent decrease in ulcer indices in groups treated with the extract. The highest reduction in ulceration was observed in the group treated with 200 mg/kg of the extract, although statistically insignificant but comparable to the cimetidine treated group. This suggests that Allium sativum extract possesses antiulcer properties. Another aspect of this research work evaluated the effect of the same extract (50, 100 and 200 mg/kg P.O) on gastrointestinal motility in mice using activated charcoal meal model. Normal saline (20 ml/kg P.O) was used as the negative control. The results obtained from the study revealed a dose-dependent increase in intestinal motility which is suggestive of stimulant laxative mechanism of action. This validates its traditional use as a treatment for constipation and aid in digestion.","PeriodicalId":17442,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences","volume":"96 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"86658718","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
