The simulator consists of three main parts, the user interface, the simulation core and the application package. The system is built on top of the X-Windows graphics package. The paper describes each of simulator parts and the use of the graphics package. The simulation core uses three coordinate systems to conveniently represent the environment, the robot and its sensors. These coordinate systems and the transformations between them are discussed. A path planning algorithm called the Virtual Force Field algorithm has been implemented on the simulator. In this way better utilization of the photonic switching bandwidth is achieved. Both synchronous and asynchronous TDM are considered. A simulation study is conducted to examine the buffer behavior at input and output stages of two proposed architectures. The interest is in buffer latency and saturation point as functions of the offered load and the multiplexing factor L. The effect of the latter parameter dominates with the single channel fabric. For an N*N fabric, the input buffer singularity is determined by L/N. A performance measure which represents an 'actual' production rate of a machine is defined in order to identify bottlenecks. A simulation procedure based on the proposed measure is developed in order to determine how best to alleviate the bottlenecks. This new approach is applied for redesigning an actual large-scale multi-stage flow-shop production line in the authors' steelworks and they can determine the proper specifications of this line which can achieve an increase of productivity with a minimal investment.
