In this regard, the Least Recently Used (LRU) replacement principle is a simple and widely-used method. Despite its popularity, LRU has deficits in the achieved hit rate performance and cannot consider transport and network optimization criteria for selecting content to be cached. As a result, many alternatives have been proposed in the literature, which improve the cache performance at the cost of higher complexity.In this work, we evaluate the implementation complexity and runtime performance of LRU, Least Frequently Used (LFU), and score based strategies in the class of fast $O(1)$ updates with constant effort per request. We implement Window LFU (W-LFU) within this class and show that $O(1)$ update effort can be achieved. We further compare fast update schemes of Score Gated LRU and new Score Gated Polling (SGP). SGP is simpler than LRU and provides full flexibility for arbitrary score assessment per data object as information basis for performance optimization regarding network cost and quality measures.","PeriodicalId":173858,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE 23rd International Workshop on Computer Aided Modeling and Design of Communication Links and Networks (CAMAD)","volume":"82 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114147575","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Among them, centralized-radio access network (C- RAN) architecture, enables the separation of the baseband unit (BBU) from the remote radio head (RRH) so as to achieve higher performance in terms of cost-efficiency and flexibility. Another key 5G technology is the deployment of a massive number of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) antennas operating at higher frequencies, i.e., at the millimeter wave (mmWave) band. However, this move towards high mmWave traffic streams make the use of the traditional interface between BBU and RRH, its main specification being the common public radio interface (CPRI), prohibitive. To that end, a novel 5G fronthaul architecture is needed, able to cope with scenarios where high fronthaul traffic is expected, e.g., in dense area networks. To ensure high performance, an efficient medium access control (MAC) protocol should be also designed for these demanding use cases. To this end, a medium transparent MAC (MT-MAC) protocol was recently proposed for fiber wireless (FiWi) fronthaul networks. Although MT-MAC was shown to achieve high performance in terms of throughput and delay for indoor scenarios, its performance under challenging outdoor scenarios is unknown. Hence, in this paper, we study the MT- MAC performance under realistic outdoor dense area network conditions and we comment on its suitability as a 5G protocol solution for FiWi fronthaul networks. Finally, further insights are given for the key parameters that should be taken into account in the design of efficient 5G protocol solutions.","PeriodicalId":173858,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE 23rd International Workshop on Computer Aided Modeling and Design of Communication Links and Networks (CAMAD)","volume":"2014 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121394373","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Cloud computing and network function virtualization (NFV) constitute two fundamental key enablers towards the implementation of these new paradigms. On the one hand, computational functionalities are no longer limited to distant servers, but they are coming closer to the end user through Multi-access Edge Computing (MEC) technology, thus creating a multi-tier cloud architecture in modern networks. On the other hand, going beyond the existing rigid architectures, NFV enables the flexible and on-the-fly creation and placement both of application and network functions, aiming at satisfying the diverse application requirements and optimizing the management of the heterogeneous (network, computational and storage) resources. In this paper, we discuss the challenges that arise in a MEC-enabled 5G architecture that supports the flexible placement/migration of network and application virtual network functions (VNFs), orchestrated by an NFV Orchestrator (NFVO) with admission management functionalities, able to manage on-the-fly the network functions and resources. Finally, we describe in detail a MECenabled testbed architecture that facilitates the development and testing of such solution in the context of 5G networks.","PeriodicalId":173858,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE 23rd International Workshop on Computer Aided Modeling and Design of Communication Links and Networks (CAMAD)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125305314","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One of them is 802.15.4 that allows for an easy deployability due to their low cost, and mesh capabilities. However, due to their high latency, these networks should be restricted in size, hence the need to be combined with wider area technologies such as cellular networks. Such network can be simulated using ns-3. However, ns-3 does not simulate nodes running ready-to-deploy code. As opposed to Cooja, for instance, that simulates nodes running ContikiOS. In this paper, a framework is presented to connect ns-3 with Cooja in order to provide a tool to test 802.15.4 and their respective backbone networks with ready-to-deploy code.","PeriodicalId":173858,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE 23rd International Workshop on Computer Aided Modeling and Design of Communication Links and Networks (CAMAD)","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127812244","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Bringing the Cloud, closer to mobile user, at the network’s edge, is a plausible key solution to tackle high network latencies in a Wireless Metropolitan Area Network (WMAN). The inclusion of Cloud features at the access network can be accomplished by collocating an Access Point (AP) with a respective Cloudlet. However, this functionality induces a cost of additional energy consumption at the edge of the network, which may be an important issue for massive deployments not only for operational expenses, but also for environmental reasons. Thus, designing such an architecture should take into consideration not only technical requirements to support user Quality of Experience (QoE), but also power consumption expenses constraints imposed by operators. In this paper, we assume an Edge Computing environment and propose latency and energy aware heuristic policies, such as Active Cloudlet Selection and User Assignment policies to activate Cloudlets and route mobile users for service to the most appropriate active Cloudlet respectively. The performance of the proposed algorithms is evaluated through simulation experiments and results show that the proposed schemes are very efficient in terms of energy consumption, system’s latencies and QoS.","PeriodicalId":173858,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE 23rd International Workshop on Computer Aided Modeling and Design of Communication Links and Networks (CAMAD)","volume":"59 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133415616","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Moreover, device-to-device (D2D) communications underlaying mobile networks can provide reliable communications and add SE gains. A major challenge in HetNets is the inter-cell interference (ICI) due to the coexistence of multiple tiers of base stations (BSs). To tackle this challenge, the enhanced inter-cell interference coordination (eICIC) scheme was adopted by 3GPP. In eICIC the MBSs mute their transmission during the so-called “almost blank subframes” (ABS). This muting strategy causes resources reduction to the MBS users (MUEs). We propose the use of D2D communications to forward the transmission from the SBS to the MUEs during ABS subframes, by using inactive UEs to relay the downlink transmission, when the destination UEs are outside the coverage of the BS. We use a heuristic resource allocation (RA) algorithm based on the traffic load at the SBSs that integrates eICIC with D2D communications to avoid the service degradation during the time-domain muting. Simulation results of a HetNet with D2D-eICIC show that the SE of our approach outperforms other interference management approaches.","PeriodicalId":173858,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE 23rd International Workshop on Computer Aided Modeling and Design of Communication Links and Networks (CAMAD)","volume":"321 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115225221","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore, many recent research efforts in Deterministic Network Calculus (DNC) focused on the tradeoff between accuracy and cost of its delay-bounding analyses. In this paper, we present insights on reliable, reproducible and performance on both branches of DNC, algebraic analysis and optimization, as well as the tools employed by them. We reveal circumstances causing problems for reliability and reproducibility of DNC's optimization analysis and we investigate the potential to improve computational performance of algebraic DNC. To that end, we present theoretical background on the topic of parallelizing the DNC analyses and an implementation in the open-source DiscoDNC tool. With our proposed approach, we achieve a speedup of analysis times of one order of magnitude.","PeriodicalId":173858,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE 23rd International Workshop on Computer Aided Modeling and Design of Communication Links and Networks (CAMAD)","volume":"102 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123546083","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Furthermore, with the advent of future fully-integrated 5G networks, new constraints need to be satisfied such as ultra-reliability and low-latency. With the help of Fog computing and the Multi-access Edge Computing (MEC) framework, services can be offered to the end users in a fast and practical way. Our work presents DRIVE a framework for service discovery in a 5G environment. However, in order to guarantee dynamic distribution and best management of services, we plan to deploy those services as container (e.g. Docker container). Moreover, we propose distribution of edge services at three different layer of communication: Application, Service, and Communication Layer. Given the above considerations, we propose an edge node, placed at the edge of network, that acts as the \"brain\" and take over the computation. The main innovative elements of the proposed framework, compared to the existing literature, include the possibility to select the working layer, the dynamic reconfiguration of the edge node and the field experimental results about the performance achieved by our solution over rapidly deployable environments with resourcelimited edge nodes such as Raspberry Pi devices.","PeriodicalId":173858,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE 23rd International Workshop on Computer Aided Modeling and Design of Communication Links and Networks (CAMAD)","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126446017","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
