Interlamellar structure changes are observed during the degradation, decreasing loop and bridge chains, increasing short tail chains. From the elongation simulation of lamellar structure, craze strength is dropped during the degradation, because of decreasing oriented interlamellar chains and drawing of the molecular chains from the crystal part. Multi-scale modeling is conducted to demonstrate the relationship between microscopic structure changes and macroscopic mechanical properties. As a result, macroscopic fracture strain is reduced by the degradation, because craze growth rate becomes faster with the degradation.","PeriodicalId":17366,"journal":{"name":"journal of the Japan Society for Testing Materials","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"83087650","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The specimen was machined from different orientations in as-extruded rod. One was loaded in the transverse direction (T specimen). The other was loaded in the longitudinal direction (L specimen). The arc height value of shot peening was set to 0.15 and 0.40 mmN. The specimen surface became rough and hardness became high with an increase in the arc height value. Irrespective of specimen orientation, shot peening at low arc height value improved the fatigue strength. However, the shot peening at high arc height value did not improve the fatigue strength. The same tendency appeared in the case of T4-treated sample, suggesting that precipitation did not affect the fatigue strength degradation by hard shot peening. To investigate the influence of surface roughness formed by shot peening, fatigue tests were conducted using some specimens polished after shot peening. In the L specimen, the polishing after shot peening improves the fatigue life significantly. Therefore, the surface roughness formed by shot peening is one of the important factors in fatigue strength of shot-peened specimen. On the other hand, the fatigue life of T specimen decreased by polishing after shot peening. It was suggested that microstructural damage induced by shot peening decreases the fatigue strength in T specimen.","PeriodicalId":17366,"journal":{"name":"journal of the Japan Society for Testing Materials","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"79702496","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

They are presently viewed as a potential energy resource for the 21st century because an amount of methane gas is trapped in hydrate reservoirs around Nankai trough and Japan sea. Recently, the world’s first offshore production test from methane hydrates bearing sediments by the de-pressurization method have been conducted off the coasts of Atsumi and Shima peninsula in Japan. In the present study, an elasto-viscoplastic model for soil is applied to the triaxial test results of the hydrate-bearing sandy soils as well as the pure hydrate samples. In the model, softening due to structural degradation and hydrate bonding effect are taken into consideration. Simulation results show the applicability of the model to the hydrate-bearing soil as well as the pure methane hydrate.","PeriodicalId":17366,"journal":{"name":"journal of the Japan Society for Testing Materials","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"83863290","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Based on the orientation of carbon fibers, injection molded plates can be modeled as three-layered lamella where the core layer is sandwiched by two skin layers. The stress in the matrix in the skin layer was measured by Cr-Kα radiation by the sinψ method. Since the X-ray penetration depth is shallow, the state of stresses measured by X-rays in FRP can be assumed to be plane stress. The X-ray measurement of stress in carbon fibers was not possible because of high texture. A new method was proposed to evaluate the macrostress in SFRP from the measurement of the matrix stress. According to micromechanics analysis of SFRP, the matrix stresses in the fiber direction, 1 m σ and perpendicular to the fiber direction, 2 m σ , and shear stress 12 m τ can be expressed as the functions of the applied (macro) stresses, 1 A σ , 2 A σ , 12 A τ as follows: 1 11 1 12 2 m A A , σ α σ α σ = + 2 21 1 22 2 m A A σ α σ α σ = + , 12 66 12 m A τ α τ = , where 11 12 21 22 66 , , , , α α α α α are stress-partitioning coefficients. Using skin-layer strips cut parallel, perpendicular and 45° to the molding direction, the stress in the matrix was measured under the uniaxial applied stress and the stress-partitioning coefficients of the above equations were determined. Once these relations are established, the macrostress in SFRP can be determined from the measurements of the matrix stresses by X-rays. Microscopic phase stresses due to the mismatch of the thermal expansion coefficient between matrix and fiber was negligible in X-ray stress measurement of the skin layer.","PeriodicalId":17366,"journal":{"name":"journal of the Japan Society for Testing Materials","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"85744517","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As a result, it was found that the ratio of tetrachloroauric (III) acid to sodium citrate is preferably 1:3 was appropriate to obtain fine gold nanoparticles. The self-assembled gold nanoparticle films showed a network structure formed by nano-wires for all assembled conditions. However the thickness or the assembled state of the gold nano-wires was sensitive to the processing temperature whereas the processing time hardly affected the properties of the nano-wires. In particular, higher processing temperature led to a break in the nano-wires and then the optical properties and electrical resistivity was degraded.","PeriodicalId":17366,"journal":{"name":"journal of the Japan Society for Testing Materials","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89443728","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The frequency response of monitoring of pore pressure is significantly improved by closing the well, which reduces a high-cut response caused by wellbore storage effect in open wells. The response of pore pressure for stress or strain change is represented by linear poroelastic theory that describe mechanical coupling between rock mass and pore fluid. We revealed that even in crystalline rock the pore pressure change induced by deformation such as barometric pressure change, earth tides, and seismic waves is in agreement with theoretical model derived from the linear poroelastic theory. Pore pressure can be a proxy of stress and/or strain as studies on such as crustal deformation that have been made. It should be noted, however, that the applicable range of frequency is usually limited and absolute value of stress is difficult to be determined from pore pressure monitoring. Since amplitude and phase of pore pressure change induced by deformation depends on frequency, the sensitivity of pore pressure as a proxy of stress differs with frequency. The sensitivity may vary with time during a cycle of earthquake. The response to seismic waves follows prediction from poroelastic theory for both large and intermediate earthquakes. The sensitivity is robust at least for the amplitude of deformation induced by seismic waves. The response of pore pressure to tidal strain varies before and after large earthquake is observed, which may be attributed to apparent change of the sensitivity caused by change in diffusivity.","PeriodicalId":17366,"journal":{"name":"journal of the Japan Society for Testing Materials","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"75092857","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It has been reported that the repeated stress change induced the deterioration of rocks. However, there still remain many unknowns about the deterioration of rocks by repeated stress change. To obtain further insights into the deterioration of granite by repeated stress change, change in elastic property of specimen during the test was analyzed in detail. Cylindrical Westerly granite specimen with 20mm in height and 10mm in diameter was subjected to the cyclic loading with maximum 160 MPa (approximately 80% of the estimated uniaxial compressive strength) and minimum 0.5 MPa at room temperature. Axial and lateral strains, and the applied load were simultaneously measured at 100 points for one cycle, and Young's modulus and Poisson's ratio until failure were estimated applying these measured data. As a result, the characteristic changes in two elastic properties following the progress of the deterioration stage were revealed. At the initial degradation stage, the changes were very small. During the second steady stage, two properties were changed gradually and linearly. At the final accelerated stage, the changes were drastically. It was also found that these characteristic alterations were well accorded with the reported microcrack growth patterns.","PeriodicalId":17366,"journal":{"name":"journal of the Japan Society for Testing Materials","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"74338964","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The materials used are unidirectional CF/PPS and woven CF/PPS laminates. The effects of applied voltage, conducting time and fiber reinforcing configuration on melting behavior of CFRTP composites were investigated. The melting state was evaluated by microscopic observation and its image analysis. The experimental results revealed that the melting and oxidation behavior were influenced by reinforcing configuration and electric resistivity of CFRTP laminates. The melting area of both CFRTP laminates tends to increase with increasing the applied voltage and conducting time. It was found that the insertion of PPS films in melting interface was required in order to prevent the edge effect and non-uniform profile shapes of the melting area. It was also confirmed that woven CF/PPS laminates could be melted at low applied voltage.","PeriodicalId":17366,"journal":{"name":"journal of the Japan Society for Testing Materials","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"84705284","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
