The content is in the form of predicted arrival/departure times for buses at user-selectable geographic locations within a transit region. We discuss how the physical restrictions of such devices, e.g., screen size and paucity of keyboard options, influences the user interface design. An overview of the system architecture is provided, together with some preliminary usage results.","PeriodicalId":173372,"journal":{"name":"ITSC 2001. 2001 IEEE Intelligent Transportation Systems. Lan","doi":"10.1109/ITSC.2001.948690","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1109/ITSC.2001.948690","url":null,"abstract":"To generate effective control strategy, traffic signal control systems require reliable estimates of turning movement flows. However, current control systems are often hungry for extensive detector information from a rich detector configuration. Due to various factors, maintaining satisfactory functionality in surveillance systems, although not impossible, is somehow difficult. A question is raised as to whether the surveillance system provides sufficient detector information for the controllers. Detector information sufficiency can be evaluated in both temporal or spatial dimensions. This paper focuses on investigating the detector information quality as a function of the density of spatial distribution. With a full set of detectors at intersections, it has been established that useful estimates of turning movement proportions can be generated using OLS-based methods, given time-series of input and output counts are available. A partial set of detectors will provide less information, leading to estimates with less accuracy and greater variability. The important issue is how dense does the detector configuration need to be to provide sufficient information to support parameter estimation. This paper investigates this issue based on the notion of identifiability. A numerical test is also proposed to evaluate the sufficiency of particular detector configuration.","PeriodicalId":173372,"journal":{"name":"ITSC 2001. 2001 IEEE Intelligent Transportation Systems. The validation process has been carried out within the CAPITALS PLUS project, co-funded by the European Commission, which addresses the demonstration and validation of transport telematics information systems and services in five capital cities: Berlin, Brussels, Madrid, Paris, and Rome. The validation process included a range of analyses based on the design and application of surveys to the different types of users, elaboration of estimates, collection of data sets and application of transport models. The main objective of this paper is to describe the common methodology established for the evaluation of the various impacts coming from the applications of information systems and services in CAPITALS PLUS cities, and to provide an overview of the key results obtained in terms of systems performance, users acceptance of the new information services, improvement in modal shift, and reduction of energy consumption and pollutants emissions.","PeriodicalId":173372,"journal":{"name":"ITSC 2001. 2001 IEEE Intelligent Transportation Systems. Both methods have their particular benefits and weaknesses especially regarding the definition of user objectives. This article presents an approach to combine these diverse philosophies and describes its implementation for the new open system architecture of the Bavarian capital Munich.","PeriodicalId":173372,"journal":{"name":"ITSC 2001. 2001 IEEE Intelligent Transportation Systems. Is ITS ready for the older driver? 它为老年驾驶员准备好了吗?

{"title":"Is ITS ready for the older driver?","authors":"N. Stamatiadis","doi":"10.1109/ITSC.2001.948675","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1109/ITSC.2001.948675","url":null,"abstract":"Technological breakthroughs have advanced the level of applications regarding the intelligent transportation systems (ITS). Such advancements often require human interaction, which may pose problems if the role of the humans is not properly addressed. At the same time, the number of elderly drivers is growing and the aging related deficiencies that may affect driver safety are particularly important in developing ITS systems and components. Developing future ITS components without considering the needs of this increasing special population may be a grave mistake. This paper, focusing on the older driver needs and problems within the ITS environment, reviewed and documented past and current research efforts in the US. The findings of this review indicate that even though significant research effort is focused toward the development of ITS components, very little is focused primarily on the older driver. Future research areas are identified that will assist in determining the impact of age on the various ITS components and address the specific needs of elderly drivers.","PeriodicalId":173372,"journal":{"name":"ITSC 2001. 2001 IEEE Intelligent Transportation Systems. The system we propose is based on vision, neural networks and a neuro-fuzzy system. Vision is used to detect the license-plate and to single out the characters it contains, while a neural network-based classifier is used to \"read\" the plate. The resulting string is then matched to a \"white list\" of allowed plates, to check the transit authorization. In case matching fails, a neuro-fuzzy agent analyses the features of the mismatch, to filter out possible false alarms and to optimize the workload for the human supervisor that has to validate the alarm.","PeriodicalId":173372,"journal":{"name":"ITSC 2001. 2001 IEEE Intelligent Transportation Systems. These technologies allow the realization of intelligent systems that provide the capabilities for a user to experience events from remote locations in an interactive way. In this paper, we describe research aimed at the realization of a powerful televiewing system applied to the traffic incident detection and monitoring needs of today's highways. Sensor clusters utilizing both rectilinear and omni-directional cameras provide an interactive, real-time, multi-resolution televiewing interface to emergency response crews. Ultimately, this system will have a direct impact on reducing incident-related highway congestion by improving the quality of information to which emergency personnel have access.","PeriodicalId":173372,"journal":{"name":"ITSC 2001. 2001 IEEE Intelligent Transportation Systems. The purpose is to operate a comparative evaluation of potentialities and limits in the two different approaches, by applying the models on a large scale motorway network with a complete traffic data base. The two different modelling approaches are: a model based on microscopic traffic theory and a macroscopic stochastic experimental model. Model performances have been verified comparing some simulation results to the real travel times and traffic flows measured on the network, in \"noncongested traffic conditions\". Travel times of all vehicles from origin to destination have been measured as well as all origin and destination flows by using data from the toll collection system (entrance and exit time for each vehicle). Models potentialities and limits in large-scale applications are also discussed.","PeriodicalId":173372,"journal":{"name":"ITSC 2001. 2001 IEEE Intelligent Transportation Systems. Proceedings (Cat. Pedestrian walking behavior is of prime importance in the study of planning and design of the underground stations during peak hours. This paper reports an investigation on the behavior of pedestrians in Hong Kong Mass Transit Railway (MTR) stations during peak hour periods. As the pedestrian walking behavior would be influenced by the physical properties of the walking facilities, nine pedestrian facilities are classified for analysis. Surveys were conducted in the Hong Kong Causeway Bay MTR Station. The data collected were used to estimate the passenger origin-destination (O-D) flow matrix within the station. PEDROUTE, a pedestrian simulation model, was used to simulate the pedestrian movements within the station by incorporated the O-D flow matrix and the travel time functions of the nine classified pedestrian facilities. It is believed that the developed model for simulation of pedestrian movements in Hong Kong MTR stations can improve the existing stations and contribute to the design of new railway stations in Hong Kong.","PeriodicalId":173372,"journal":{"name":"ITSC 2001. 2001 IEEE Intelligent Transportation Systems.
