The model has a particular emphasis on the sulfur cycle and includes specific chemical components of dissolved oxygen, soluble organic carbon, sulfates, free sulfides, total sulfides, sulfide capacity, sulfur, and pyrite. Different levels of sediment organics (OCS) and turnover rates (RST) are mathematically imposed and the subsequent levels of chemical components are determined after a 210-day period. General chemical properties are identified for a RST-OCS plane.","PeriodicalId":17335,"journal":{"name":"Journal of the Environmental Engineering Division","volume":"375 1","pages":"125-143"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1980-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"74241324","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The field designs which yield data on mass emissions are generally most useful for evaluating alternatives to control urban nonpoint pollution. Recent field sampling of urban runoff in the Detroit, Mich. area (Southeast Michigan) permits better characterization of urban runoff quality, distribution of sizes of solids in runoff, and correlations of suspended solids with other constituents in runoff. It is concluded that region-specific runoff data are useful to planners and engineers engaged in analysis of alternative control strategies. Data from Southeast Michigan indicate that certain aspects of the urban nonpoint problem are not amenable to some source controls, such as street sweeping, but suggest that hydrologic modifications, such as detention and increased infiltration, may be more effective.","PeriodicalId":17335,"journal":{"name":"Journal of the Environmental Engineering Division","volume":"106 1","pages":"153-162"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1980-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"78187051","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Since the primary mechanism of cleaning the filter media is due to the hydraulic shearing action of the backwashing water, a new ejector-backwashing system, taking advantage of hydrodynamic shear created within the mixing zone of an ejector, was developed and evaluated in both pilot and full-scale plants. The mechanism involved in backwashing a filter bed consists of two sequential steps: (1)Hydrodynamic shear dislodges solid flocs from the surface of the medium within an ejector's mixing zone; and (2)dislodged solid flocs are carried upward and ultimately removed from the filter. A significant saving in the backwashing water can be realized by using raw water during the beginning period of backwashing and clean water only during the polishing period. In addition, energy requirement for backwashing is less than that used in most conventional backwashing techniques.","PeriodicalId":17335,"journal":{"name":"Journal of the Environmental Engineering Division","volume":"18 1","pages":"915-926"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1979-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"73744147","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The processes for treating trickling-filter effluent were lime treatment for suspended solids and heavy-metal removal, ammonia stripping and breakpoint chlorination for nitrogen removal, recarbonation and filtration, activated-carbon adsorption for organics removal, reverse osmosis for demineralization, and final chlorination for disinfection. The COD and a broad range of volatile and gaschromatographable substances were measured in the plant influent and effluent and in the effluents of individual processes. Lime treatment was effective in removing COD and polychlorinated biphenyls, while both ammonia stripping and activated-carbon contacting removed a broad range of volatile compounds. Chlorination led to the formation of a variety of halogenated compounds, mainly trihalomethanes.","PeriodicalId":17335,"journal":{"name":"Journal of the Environmental Engineering Division","volume":"10 1","pages":"675-693"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1979-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"77262883","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Irrigation rates of 2 in./week to 8 in./week (50 mm/week to 200 mm/week) were used. Yields and nutrient uptake increased with irrigation rate, while dry matter content and nutrient content remained relatively constant. Yields were lower than those of fertility studies. Split applications produced slightly higher nitrogen uptake over single applications for sorghum x sudangrass and corn silage at 6 in./week and 8 in./week (150 mm/week and 200 mm/week). Both methods gave comparable uptake at 4 in./week (100 mm/week) for all three crops.","PeriodicalId":17335,"journal":{"name":"Journal of the Environmental Engineering Division","volume":"12 1","pages":"535-545"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1979-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"85991082","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The filter internal diameter was 16.51 cm and the packing depth was 0.61m. The bed was operated at high loading rates (5 to 35 gpm/ft² or 0.204 to 1.43 m³/min/m²) with and without application of concentrated polymer (Dearborn Aquafloc-418) solution precoats. The feed solids concentration was varied from 50 ppm to 200 ppm. Filter performance was improved using the precoated media. The applied polymer precoat concentration was found to influence both the solids removal efficiency and the bed pressure drop.","PeriodicalId":17335,"journal":{"name":"Journal of the Environmental Engineering Division","volume":"32 1","pages":"231-243"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1979-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89186203","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
