Nagai","doi":"10.12935/jvma.75.e180","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.12935/jvma.75.e180","url":null,"abstract":"We investigated the effect of both duration from vaccination to parturition in pregnant sows and colostral restriction during 6 h after birth for neonate piglets on the level of maternal antibodies for classical swine fever (CSF) vaccine in suckling piglets. In this study, piglets delivered from 3 pregnant sows vaccinated with CSF and 2 unvaccinated pregnant sows were used, and the serum CSF neutralizing antibody titeres in piglets with colostral restriction during the suckling period was significantly lower than those without the restriction. In the piglets with restricted colostrum intake, the group with a period from vaccination to parturition of 21 days had a significantly lower CSF antibody titer during the experimental period than the group of more than 161 days. The percentage of piglets testing positive for CSF antibodies was 0% at 14 and 21 days after birth in the group with short a short period (21 days) from vaccination to parturition and colostral restriction. In this study, we examined 41 FBS samples collected between 2017 and 2021 for BVDV contamination. Thirty-four of 41 samples (82.9%) were positive to pestivirus-specific RT-PCR, and 17 (41.5%) and 1 (2.4%) of 41 samples were seropositive using the neutralization test for BVDV1 and 2, respectively. Ten of the 41 samples that were RT-PCR-positive with a high ELISA titer were subjected to virus isolation; however, no infectious virus was detected. Our results showed that only 5 of the 41 FBS samples (12.2%) were both PCR-negative and BVDV-specific antibody-free. This study was conducted to understand the transmissibility of classical swine fever virus in wild boar populations, limited by the impossibility of a correct case count because of the nature of wildlife. Wildlife PCR test results between September 2018 and February 2019 were collected from the homepages of Gifu, Aichi, and Mie Prefectures. In descriptive epidemiology, the geographical spread in the three prefectures, and temporal patterns of PCR test positivity in Gifu Prefecture were observed. Using the Susceptible ( S ) - Exposed ( E ) - Infectious ( I ) - Recovery ( R ) model, assuming the weekly test positivity fol-lows beta distribution, parameters were estimated in a Markov Chain Monte Carlo simulation, and the basic reproduction number ( R 0 ) was calculated. As a result, the mean infectious period was as long as 100 - 145 days, and R 0 was estimated to be 4.2 - 5.1. In this analysis, however, population dynamics considering births and deaths and population density were not considered.
