It contains transport and thermodynamic contributions and the latter is shown to be closely related to the orbital magnetic susceptibility. The physical interpretation of this relationship is clarified. Antiferromagnetic transition was found at <i>T</i><sub>N</sub> = 13.3 K together with slow dynamics and surprisingly unquenched orbital moments in the paramagnetic state. Residual spin fluctuations coexisting with a long-range order below <i>T</i><sub>N</sub> were witnessed in <i>μ</i>SR. A coplanar spin structure of propagation vector <tex-math space=\"preserve\" version=\"MathJax\">(boldsymbol{k} = (0,0,0))</tex-math> confined within the triangular lattice was revealed by neutron diffraction to have a relatively small frozen moment of 1.96 <i>μ</i><sub>B</sub>. Ferromagnetic superexchange interactions through a characteristic zig-zag path via ∼90° angled double Fe==O==Fe and double Fe==Cl==Fe bridges counted for this spin arrangement, presenting similarity and contrasting difference to the antiferromagnetic zig-zag path in the <i>S</i> = 1/2 triangular lattice Cu(OH)Cl in monoclinic structure. The obtained value of critical exponent, <i>β</i> = 0.2585(16), in Fe(OD)Cl agrees well with the theoretical value 0.253 <tex-math space=\"preserve\" version=\"MathJax\">( mp )</tex-math> 0.01 in the <i>X–Y</i> frustrated spin model for stacked-triangular antiferromagnet. Experimental evidence all consistently demonstrate the existence of magnetic order with extensive spin fluctuations on a wide range from ∼1 to 10<sup>−9</sup>–10<sup>−12</sup> s. In this study, we have carried out high-pressure <sup>33</sup>S-nuclear magnetic resonance measurements on a pressure-induced semiconducting phase with a small energy gap of SmS. To analyze the recovery curve of nuclear spin–lattice relaxation time <i>T</i><sub>1</sub>, consisting of multiple components, the Bayesian inference was introduced. The unique temperature dependence of 1/<i>T</i><sub>1</sub> is reproduced based on a simplified rectangular band model and a periodic Anderson model, which allows to obtain parameters characterizing the semiconducting state semi-quantitatively: the bandwidths of conduction electrons and quasiparticles are much narrower and the energy gap is smaller than for SmB<sub>6</sub>, a prototypical Kondo insulator.
