This absorber improves energy absorption and impact resistance. This research compares the novel absorber to a conventional polymer-integrated model, by examining impact force, von-Mises stress, equivalent plastic strain, energy absorption, and coefficient of restitution. Utilizing the finite element method, the effects of shell density and thickness are analysed under E.C.E-R042 low-velocity impact standards. Sandwich absorbers exhibit lower stresses and plastic strains in the core. In addition, they demonstrate smaller impact forces and enhanced energy absorption within a specific range of shell densities. Furthermore, the absorber’s flexibility strongly influences contact time. The core of sandwich absorber models accounts for between 70 and 90% of energy absorption, indicating slightly lower energy absorption than polymer foams. The simulation results are analysed using analysis of variance to investigate the combined effect of the density and thickness of the sandwich absorber shell on the efficiency of the sandwich absorber. The optimal values of density and thickness are determined using grey relation analysis to be 150 kg/m<sup>3</sup> and 25 mm, respectively.</p>","PeriodicalId":17252,"journal":{"name":"Journal of The Brazilian Society of Mechanical Sciences and Engineering","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":2.2,"publicationDate":"2024-09-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"142226974","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this article, experimental work is conducted to analyze machining performance during the conventional turning (CT) and UVAT operations for aluminum 3003 alloy. The microhardness, chip morphology, microstructure, machining temperature, surface roughness, cutting force, tool wear, machined surface damage, corrosion behavior, and residual stresses are analyzed and compared between CT and UVAT. Outcomes revealed that compared to CT, lesser machining force, lesser tool wear, higher temperature, lesser roughness, and lesser surface defects are observed during the UVAT operation. Segmentation, higher thickness, and cracks in chips are obtained for the CT operation whereas negligible chip segmentation, smaller chip thickness, smooth chips, and crack-free chips are observed for the UVAT operation. More grain refinement in microstructure is observed, and higher microhardness is obtained for the UVAT operation compared to the base material (BM) and the CT operation. Compressive residual stresses are attained in UVAT than tensile residual stresses for CT. The corrosion resistance is improved to about 55% in the UVAT operation than the CT operation. The outcomes showed that the machining performance of aluminum alloy is enhanced for UVAT compared with CT.</p>","PeriodicalId":17252,"journal":{"name":"Journal of The Brazilian Society of Mechanical Sciences and Engineering","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":2.2,"publicationDate":"2024-09-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"142216719","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the actual transportation process, traditional control methods face challenges in solving problems such as double pendulum. Accordingly, an underactuated control approach based on energy coupling is introduced for the quadrotor UAV with slung load, specifically considering the double-pendulum and variable rope length. A smooth expected trajectory is used to ensure the steady operation of the UAV. According to the energy coupling relationship between the UAV and hook with load, the anti-swing controller is constructed. The system’s steady-state performance is assessed using Lyapunov and Barbalat’s lemma. Through comparative experiments and results analysis, it is shown that the proposed control method effectively minimizes residual swing angles and enables precise UAV positioning. Meanwhile, the proposed controller demonstrates robustness against unknown resistance parameters and external disturbances.</p>","PeriodicalId":17252,"journal":{"name":"Journal of The Brazilian Society of Mechanical Sciences and Engineering","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":2.2,"publicationDate":"2024-09-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"142216718","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As a whole piece, the ELT’s occupy a large volume, resulting in high costs and delays in transportation. Therefore, a precutting process at collection points would significantly reduce the space occupied by whole tires and improve their transport. Cutting procedures are crucial, and the devices for this operation must be optimized to minimize energy consumption. This study focuses on the numerical evaluation of nine blade profiles using explicit 3D simulations. The simulations applied the third-order Ogden hyperelastic model to evaluate the large deformations of rubber used in tire manufacturing. The numerical results were analyzed in terms of the force and work done, to identify the profile with the best performance. Among the profiles evaluated, it was found that the sharp profiles had better characteristics, while the hollow profiles were very effective. In addition, experimental rubber cutting tests were conducted using a universal testing machine. Two geometries, including the hollow profile obtained from the numerical simulation, were manufactured and applied to validate the simulations. The findings showed that the hollow profile reduced a 68% of the work done compared to the straight one, which is the profile most commonly used to manufacture these tools.</p>","PeriodicalId":17252,"journal":{"name":"Journal of The Brazilian Society of Mechanical Sciences and Engineering","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":2.2,"publicationDate":"2024-09-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"142216720","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Such criteria were applied to a set of published loading conditions which correspond to fatigue resistance limits involving synchronous sinusoidal in-phase and out-of-phase bending and torsion. The predictive capabilities associated with the application of these models were evaluated based on the respective error indices, which measure the deviation of such predictions with respect to their experimentally observed values within an infinite-life context. Assessment of the overall predictive capability, involving the totality of the 65 loading conditions considered in this work, is then presented in the form of frequency histograms, exhibiting the dispersion of the error index for each of the criteria in question. Accordingly, one could verify that the predictive capability of the Papadopoulos criterion is generally superior to those corresponding to the critical plane-based models involved in this study. Finally, the influence of specific loading parameters such as mean normal stress and mean shear stress on the degree of dispersion in the frequency histograms is presented and discussed.</p>","PeriodicalId":17252,"journal":{"name":"Journal of The Brazilian Society of Mechanical Sciences and Engineering","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":2.2,"publicationDate":"2024-09-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"142216489","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Vibration separation (VS) technology can address this problem by eliminating the impact of time-varying transfer paths on the signal. However, existing methods for determining the first window position (FWP) of VS are not highly accurate. To address this issue, a novel method for determining the FWP has been proposed in this paper, thereby creating an enhanced VS (EVS) technology. First, the envelope signal, which contains the amplitude-modulated signal (AMS) due to time-varying transfer paths, is separated using a zero-phase bandpass filter and Hilbert transform. Then, adaptive chirp mode decomposition is employed to accurately estimate a harmonic of the AMS. A sequence is formed by identifying the maximum points of the harmonic signal, indicating the moments when the planetary gear passes beneath the accelerometer. Finally, the VS method is applied based on the selected FWP. The results from both simulation and experimental signal analyses indicate that the FWP error of the EVS method (1.57%) is lower than the errors (1.83, 20.06, and 12.04%) found in the comparison methods. Additionally, the fault characteristic amplitude in the envelope order spectrum using EVS (9.78 m/s<sup>2</sup>) is higher than the amplitudes (6.14 m/s<sup>2</sup>, 6.18 m/s<sup>2</sup>, 8.56 m/s<sup>2</sup>, and 0.95 m/s<sup>2</sup>) recorded by the comparison methods. These findings confirm the effectiveness and superiority of EVS over other methods in terms of FWP accuracy and fault characteristic enhancement.</p>","PeriodicalId":17252,"journal":{"name":"Journal of The Brazilian Society of Mechanical Sciences and Engineering","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":2.2,"publicationDate":"2024-09-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"142226975","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To address this problem, we propose an improved version of NSGA-III (I-NSGA-III), in which a good point set, rather than the original random mechanism, is used to generate a uniformly distributed initial population. Meanwhile, based on the structural feature of the pre-designed inductor, a target model of temperature rise is established by Newton’s law of cooling to ensure calculation precision and improve efficiency. In addition, we integrated a fuzzy membership technique to identify the best compromise solution (BCS) from the generated Pareto-optimal solutions (PSs). The change in solidity has been accomplished by changing the blade count. Furthermore, endwall injection has been applied to investigate the possibility of removing some blades, and then employing injection to improve the performance. Results show that reducing the blade count results in a shift to higher mass flow rates. It is further found that reducing the solidity reduces the compressor peak pressure rise. The near-stall efficiency, however, was slightly increased and then slightly decreased by removing the blades, which is presented and discussed. Endwall injection applied in this work was found to compensate the pressure loss caused by removing about 18 percent of the blades. Furthermore, it considerably increased the stable operating range. The quantification of porosity is important in various fields, ranging from industry to biomedicine. Although various techniques are available to quantify porosity in laboratory environments, its analysis applied in the context of nondestructive tests in industry or biomedical protocols can be challenging. To contribute to the development of alternative methods for measuring the porosity of a material, this paper investigated the feasibility of using vibroacoustography, a low-cost, nondestructive, and noncontact technique, to estimate the porosity of rock samples. The study examined the vibroacoustic response as a function of porosity in synthetic ceramic samples produced using the same material with controlled porosity percentages. Then, the vibroacoustography technique was applied to a realistic case of sandstone rocks with varying porosities. The results showed that the new protocol can be used to estimate the porosity as it demonstrates a relationship between the amplitude of vibroacoustic signals and the porosity of rock samples. W/O nano-emulsion was synthesized in two different surfactant concentrations, namely 10% and 15%. Influence of different input parameters, including current, pulse-on time, pulse-off time, and the concentration of the dielectric fluid, was explored on the key output responses, namely the material removal rate (MRR) and surface roughness. After evaluating its dielectric properties and observing a smaller particle size (46.33 nm) with a polydispersity index of 0.103, the 15% surfactant concentration was selected for EDM testing in comparison with conventional EDM oil. A mathematical model was developed using a face-centered cubic design model of the response surface methodology, and the results were subsequently compared with those obtained from an artificial neural network (ANN) model. The quadratic mathematical model for both MRR and surface roughness closely aligned with the experimental data, with current identified as the most influential parameter affecting both MRR and surface roughness. Pulse-off time, on the other hand, exhibited minimal impact on EDM performance. Furthermore, error analysis was conducted to compare the accuracy of the RSM and ANN models, with the ANN model demonstrating the least error. Notably, the machined surface exhibited fewer cracks and pores in the presence of the proposed (W/O) emulsion and displayed improved micro-hardness compared to conventional EDM oil.</p>","PeriodicalId":17252,"journal":{"name":"Journal of The Brazilian Society of Mechanical Sciences and Engineering","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":2.2,"publicationDate":"2024-09-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"142216493","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
