Because of the characteristics required by IoT systems, some specific aspects must be considered during the antenna design phase. As a representative example, the design of a miniature position tracker is presented. The performance of the antenna as integrated into the device as well as of the final system in a real field test are presented.","PeriodicalId":171503,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE International Smart Cities Conference (ISC2)","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131781655","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Towards the development of Guadalajara's Smart city there are several Mobile Mammography Service units. These units are able to provide the citizens the results of their Breast Cancer test in a period from 3 to 6 months, but in many cases, this period of time could be a problem for the women under test. In this work, an Information Technology (IT) prototype that focuses in accelerating the process for breast cancer detection is proposed. This prototype is an application powered by IBM Watson's Cloud Cognitive Services. Also a customized methodology that facilitates the integration of leading edge technologies is described in this article. This methodology was used in order to develop the s-Health solution presented. The project is being developed due to a partnership between the Smart Cities Innovation Center at Universidad de Guadalajara and IBM, also the development of this prototype is being validated by a potential collaboration under legal review, with the Hospital Civil de Guadalajara, Mexico.","PeriodicalId":171503,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE International Smart Cities Conference (ISC2)","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127661007","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this work, we present an application of the microservice paradigm to create a mobility services platform. By exposing each part of the process as a microservice, we achieve the ability of developing applications as orchestration of available components. Moreover, we leverage the possibility of sharing data between different applications in a controlled environment.","PeriodicalId":171503,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE International Smart Cities Conference (ISC2)","volume":"46 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127932281","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In many cases, real measurements are taken so as to map signal strengths, interferences, and so on. However, taking real measurements is very time consuming and becomes impractical in complex, large scenarios. With the aim to avoid this burden, simulation techniques based on Ray Tracing, combining Geometric Optics and Uniform Theory of Diffraction, are used to predict waves' behaviour within a given environment. Those simulations depend on a number of parameters, namely angular resolution, number of rebounds, cells size, etc. By tuning these parameters, high-definition (HD) and low-definition (LD) results can be obtained. Although more practical than manual measurements, the computational cost of simulations in HD prevents their use in complex environments and their LD counterparts are applied. In this article we propose a technique based on collaborative filtering (CF) that allows the use of LD simulations (with low computational cost) by lessening their low quality problems. The proposed CF strategy exploits spacial constraints in 2D propagation planes to improve simulation results, which end up being very similar to those of HD, with a fraction of its computational cost.","PeriodicalId":171503,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE International Smart Cities Conference (ISC2)","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122670956","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, most industry participants are conservative and prefer to utilize established, often un-integrated, technologies rather than deploy newer technologies that would help achieve the goals of the smart city. To evaluate the potential of smart commercial real-estate (CRE) we studied a Swedish commercial real estate firm that has developed and deployed a technology-based self-service (TBSS) to help tenants reduce energy consumption. The study was grounded in the theoretical service-dominant (S-D) logic lexicon and our results suggest that for commercial real estate firms to successfully implement TBSS they need to enhance their competence in three areas: management of information technology, within-organization and business-to-business networking skills. Further, these areas are inter-related and successful deployment of TBSS requires improvement in all three areas.","PeriodicalId":171503,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE International Smart Cities Conference (ISC2)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131375758","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Traffic models are comprised of different mechanisms that give it its realism. In this work two basic mechanisms are studied: the dynamic movement of the vehicle and a cautious car-following behavior. The dynamic movement of the vehicle is dependent on an autoregressive acceleration algorithm, which gives the vehicle an innate fluid motion. The model also considers a cautious car-following mechanism, where the vehicle decelerates if a safe distance threshold is crossed and the lagging vehicle is traveling faster. Additionally, using the described model, we performed a study to observe the impact of the standard deviation of the velocity on the overall average velocity. This deviation is caused by human reaction times, tiredness, distractions, etc. Therefore, these results reflect the human-driving efficiency.","PeriodicalId":171503,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE International Smart Cities Conference (ISC2)","volume":"73 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130871581","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

All the European Countries agreed in reducing the costs that enterprises have to face due to Administrative Burdens (AB). Each Country has implemented his own simplification plans in order to move from the Red Tape to better regulation. Trentino's local governments both 1) issued laws to cut down the total amount of information obligations that the firms have to fulfill by legislation and 2) implemented a set of new online services to simplify the communication between firms and local PAs (Public Administrations). Even if e-government has proved to be the right answer to reduce AB in several EU Countries, it hides issues and pitfalls, especially in terms of accessibility, usage and user-friendliness, that could transform a best practice into a costly (for PAs and for firms too) unused online structure. By the means of a sample investigation, this research aims to gather data about the feelings of the entrepreneurs located in Trentino concerning the simplification actions and the online services undertaken by national and local governments.","PeriodicalId":171503,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE International Smart Cities Conference (ISC2)","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133823327","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Citizens can pick up and drop off bikes among stations around the city. The system may be used for both work-related and leisure purposes including supporting last-mile transportation and tourism. In order to sustain and attract more users into the bike system, understanding demand and trip patterns is a key objective. Further, due to the asymmetric and dynamic nature of user demands, some stations tend to run out of bikes whereas other stations tend to be full (impeding returns). Rebalancing stations to provide high quality services to fit pick up and drop off demand is a major challenge in bike share systems. In this paper, we present a three-layer SMARTBIKE system to assist city administrators in Fortaleza, Brazil with bike share system decision making. This is an international cooperative effort between academia and government to aid in building a Smart City. The first layer of the proposed tool includes ¿-means clustering technology to understand the true demand of the city bike share system. We designed a novel station network analysis in the second layer to provide insights on system usage patterns and to help with the rebalancing strategy. The third layer provides rebalancing support at the facility and operation level. Finally, we discuss a dynamic visualization tool to support decision making.","PeriodicalId":171503,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE International Smart Cities Conference (ISC2)","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134345579","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This innovation in urban infrastructure of cities and the impacts of intensive application of technology are still being identified and mapped. A fundamental aspect under technological viewpoint to make this novelty a reality, and most comprehensive as possible is related to communication networks. Concept of Internet of Things (IoT) only materializes through a combination of technologies based on private and public networks and the Internet as the main platform. Utilities companies have already started their participation in this process in sense that they are deploying smart grids using technologies like RF Mesh and PLC, being RF Mesh the most widespread in world markets. But it is necessary to insert smart grid projects in the context of smart cities and in its converging alternatives of communications infrastructure. This work explores an emerging technology named as Long Range Wide Area Network (LoRaWAN) and proposes that this is the current alternative best suited to the big scenario of IoT, in which smart grids are included, and also compares with the RF Mesh technology widely adopted for this application.","PeriodicalId":171503,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE International Smart Cities Conference (ISC2)","volume":"286 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133534641","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These systems support the use of data by developers through enabling data discoverability and access. As such, the effectiveness of a Data Catalogue can be seen as the way in which it supports `data exploitability': the ability to assess whether the provided data is appropriate to the given task. Beyond technical compatibility, this also regards validating the policies attached to data. Here, we present a methodology to enable Smart City Data Hubs to better address exploitability by considering the way policies propagate across the data flows applied in the system.","PeriodicalId":171503,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE International Smart Cities Conference (ISC2)","volume":"45 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132830661","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
