The teaching of BSL has been occurring at an increasing rate, and many people are learning to use BSL to the\u0000 advanced levels, which are generally referred to in the UK as BSL Levels 4 and 6 and are loosely equivalent to pre-C1 (advanced)\u0000 and C1 (proficient), respectively, on the Common European Framework for Reference (Languages) scale. Spatial grammar is a crucial\u0000 aspect of BSL (Brennan 1992), and this article provides insight into issues related to\u0000 learning how to use topographic space, a feature of spatial grammar whereby real-world referent locations are replicated in the\u0000 signing production. This study of L2 advanced learners of BSL explores the numbers and types of errors that are made when applying\u0000 topographic features into their signing, with a particular focus on positioning and dimensionality aspects. Two scenarios are used\u0000 do this: classroom layouts (Task 1) and a courtroom layout (Task 2). The study concludes with reflections on how BSL teachers can\u0000 support L2 learners in improving their development of topographic skills.

HKSL allows for the doubling of heads and phrases in an XYX pattern with the doubled element occurring clause-finally. I argue that doubled elements undergo A’-movement into Spec,FocP, attracted by a focus-feature on Foc0. The moved element then fuses with the abstract focus feature head of FocP and becomes morphologically distinct from the lower element. This research provides a uniform account of two related phenomena, namely doubling and right dislocation, by considering head-to-spec movement. Finally, doubling in HKSL has not been previously described, and therefore my account adds to the typological picture of doubling in sign and spoken languages. This is especially important because HKSL allows for the doubling of both heads and phrases, which sets it apart from earlier accounts on doubling in other sign languages.

Some authors describe iconicity\u0000 as a similarity mapping between a signifier (the mental representation of the form side of a linguistic sign) and its referent,\u0000 while others state that iconicity is to be understood as a similarity mapping between a signifier and its meaning. Other scholars\u0000 have defined iconicity as a similarity mapping between a signifier and some other mental representation. The goal of this paper is\u0000 to give an overview of the consequences entailed by defining iconicity as a mapping between a signifier and its referent, a\u0000 signifier and its meaning, or a signifier and some mental concept. These consequences will be discussed from different theoretical\u0000 perspectives. It will be argued that definitions viewing iconicity as a mapping between a signifier and some associated mental\u0000 concept work best, while definitions based on reference and meaning run into several theoretical problems or are, at least, rather\u0000 theory-specific.

The prevailing idea seems to be that detailed study of movement of the parts of the torso will yield little insight\u0000 into linguistic matters – so mentions can be general and brief. The result is that torso articulations are an unmined area –\u0000 perhaps one that holds treasures, particularly regarding the appreciation of creative sign language. We draw together the findings\u0000 of other research regarding torso articulation, then give an inventory of possible torso articulations, exemplified with signs\u0000 from dozens of the world’s named sign languages, and a brief overview of how annotation systems have approached torso movement in\u0000 signs. We end with suggestions for how the study of torso articulation can open new avenues of sign language research.

Noun classifiers in Hong Kong Sign Language 香港手语中的名词分类器

However, a thorough study of the Asian SignBank shows that these same classifier handshapes occur in 76% of all HKSL nouns. In this paper, I argue that these classifier handshapes embedded in nouns are in fact noun classifiers. Under the framework of Distributed Morphology, classifier handshapes are underspecified roots in root compounds which can be assigned the nominal category when merged with a nominal functional head in syntax. The function of these classifiers is to identify, and categorize a discourse referent, and they are full-fledged classifiers according to standards set by the general linguistic literature on classifiers. In addition to verbal and noun classifiers, I also briefly show how HKSL uses mensural numeral classifiers to intervene between mass nouns and numerals within the NP. Taken together, this means that HKSL employs three different types of classifiers: verbal, noun, and numeral classifiers.

We describe and analyze specific sign parameters and their sub-parameters: handshape, orientation, place of articulation, and movement, as they are distributed in two text-types: narrative and expository discourse. A group of 16 deaf native ISL signers produced 32 texts containing a total of 6,875 signs which were then analyzed from a bottom-up approach. A sub-set of 3,919 signs out of this large database (excluding signs that are inherently variable) were found eligible for the detailed distributional analysis of text-dependent variation in terms of their articulation structure, and were used for comparison between the narrative and expository productions. Our findings show that narratives attract more variation in the sign parameters compared to expository texts. The study thus highlights the impact of communicative context on the use of signs.
